Collom Construction

My wife and I wanted to fill in the unused area in our living room which has vaulted ceilings. We saw Collom construction doing work a few houses down and asked if they could do our addition.
Everything turned out better than expected and for price we felt was fair. What I liked most about doing business with them is everything was on time and communication was great with the management. Most importantly the work was great, and when we didn’t want to spend thousands extra replacing the non-​opening windows in the room they offered a great solution and did a lot of back and forth with the city of San Diego for the plans.
TLDR: ¹⁰⁄₁₀ will do business again.

I called Collom to come and give me an estimate for damage to my house from a car. They were very nice and told me they would get me an estimate. They never called back. I called them and they told me they were to busy. That is not customer service. I am glad now that they didn’t because it would have been a nightmare with them.

I just finished my home remodel: 2 rooms addition with balcony, and changed a half bath to a full bath. I had to take time away from my busy schedule to write this review and to say «thanks «to Collom construction for doing such a great job !
Choosing a right contractor is my biggest concern. I had many other estimates from other contractors but I decided to select Collom construction because the price is right; beside, Michael (the owner) seems to be friendly, experience and knowledgable when he came to meet me for the estimate .
I had some problems with the drawing (from my own architect), but Michael was very patience toward the problems which helped to ease and made the job moved forward easily .
Beside Michael, Rick and Mark are wonderful as well, Rick is smart, talented, and loves his job, they are both friendly, professional, and neat during construction .I was happy with everyone in the team !
I trusted Collom construction, and it was a pleasant experience dealing with them, I even left the house and went away for vacation for 10 days during construction .
The project is finished «on time », the job is clean, and my remodel turned out beautiful. My friends and neighbors are impressed !
Michael delivered what he promised, he was responsible, and reliable ! During the construction period, I had no problem reaching Michael, if he missed my calls, he would return them as soon as he could .
I am very happy with the result and highly recommend Collom construction. Looking at my beautiful remodel, I appreciate all the efforts and hard work from everyone at Collom construction. This company is for sure an A+ company !

I highly recommend Collom construction. I have used Collom at my previous and current house. The owners Michael and Braulio are licensed contractors with expertise in bathrooms, kitchens, additions, and all aspects of construction. Collom has remodeled three bathrooms for me, installed hardwood flooring on the entire main floor, built the structure and done the finishing work for our gas fireplace, installed cabinetry in the laundry room, and a number of outdoor projects.
The master bathroom was a complete remodel which involved moving walls, re-​routing plumbing, extensive and intricate tile work, new vanities and shelves, drywall, etc. Michael and his employees were meticulous in the structural and finishing details. Braulio made several crucial changes in my original plan concerning placement of the tub and the floor pattern which dramatically improved the design. Michael does seamless drywall texture work which is so important and so rare to find!
The fireplace project involved framing around the fireplace (ceiling to floor), adding a mantle, marble tiles around the fireplace and construction and tiling of the hearth.
Collom also did outstanding work on several outdoor projects at my home: construction of a trex porch and trex stairway on piers, a stone porch with pavers, installation of artificial turf, and construction of a built in BBQ with a gorgeous Buddy Rhodes cement counter top.

I had Collom remodel our bath a few years ago after they were referred to us. We were initially very impressed by Mike Collom and he made us feel like we could trust him to do a good job But once we started we saw less of Collom and they worked very slow, at least not as quickly as we thought they should on such a small project. Collom wasn’t as friendly with us and was harder to get in touch with, to the point that we just figured he was too busy working on other jobs, or trying to get more jobs. He also kept trying to talk us into his ideas so he could charge us more but we kept saying no. So, we were no longer his priority. We didn’t do anything about it because he was starting to creep us out, and we just wanted the job done. He finally finished and he left, thank god. But very soon we starting seeing the poor quality of work in our bathroom. Paint started chipping, the shower doors fell off and the toilet and fixtures were real cheap and kept malfunctioning. We eventually brought in a friend of ours who was handy and replaced Collom’s cheap work. We repainted the bathroom ourselves. After a few years our bathroom still looks better after we went in and did it ourselves.

We were referred to Collom Construction when we purchased a flipped home that needed several repairs right off the bat. Michael was out to our house the next day after we called him, and we had a bid for the 12 repairs within a few days.
Michael was pretty honest with us about which repairs needed to be made before we could even move on to other projects, that it wouldn’t be wise to pick and choose based on cost alone, and that doing a few of the bigger repairs might even help other items on the list. I am glad we listened to him and tackled the bigger issues before they turned into costly nightmares. We only have a few more items to check off the list but we are really happy with our experience so far. They have also been great about understanding that we need to do work as we can afford it, and they don’t give us grief about taking things a little slower than usual because of that. They have been clear on their terms from the get-​go, and have come through as promised on every project (even if its telling us its something they don’t do, they have had a referral for those items). On a few of the larger projects, we got second and third opinions and quotes just to be safe, and Collom Construction quotes were always within the same ballpark if not lower than the other quotes.
Anything Michael or Braulio hasn’t been able to perform/​fix personally, has been contracted out (had an archway reconstructed and wall replaced, had roof repair and venting installed, main sewer line replaced, etc…). I was actually surprised that Michael came out and performed several repairs himself when he didn’t have someone available in a promised timeframe. To me, that’s great customer service.
Just a few weeks ago they came out to do an energy audit, and I highly suggest you take advantage of this service. They gave us a detailed report of the many ways we can save energy, many of the fixes have rebates attached to them. I had no idea I could be saving so much energy and money on my utility bills, AND get tax credits/​rebates to boot. This was definitely worth the nominal fee to have the audit performed, its going to save us a lot of money (and hopefully make us some!) in the long run.
After stumbling on these reviews I felt I needed to voice my own personal experience about Collom Construction and how they came through for me and my family. Take it from a seasoned Unilocaler with a track record of honest and thorough reviews, give Collom Construction the opportunity to bid on your next project.
