I really enjoyed going to the Cut Spike Distillery a couple days ago. A few co-workers and I went to the distillery after work this past Wednesday, and it was a great time. We used groupons that we bought because they were a steal;(two tours and two drinks a piece for $ 15). The Cut Spike Distillery was on the tour that we got and it was great seeing where they distill everything. To think that they brew, distill, and bottle everything in that one small building with only 14 employees is amazing; and with their whiskey winning top honors at the whiskey competition in San Francisco earlier this year is a great feat! That Wednesday was the first day that they released batch 2 of their whiskey. I have a bottle of batch 1 at home, and two was as good as the first. Their vodka was extremely tasty and smooth. I wasn’t a big fan of their rum though. The service was top notch. The bartenders were super nice, as well as the tour guide. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the brewing process. Overall, this was a great experience. I’m happy that I ordered an extra Groupon so I can go back soon.

A Nebraska single malt? Nah, not a chance it would be any good. And then, on a whim I ordered a bottle and was blown away. A very tasty single malt that not only do I love but my wife(a Jack Daniels fan) flipped over(she is Hong Kong Chinese). The closest she got to Nebraska booze was two years ago at the NU-UCLA game and a couple of Runzas. Speaking of Runzas, this single malt would pair great with a plain Runza. The notes of vanilla with a super smooth finish is a really appealing aspect of this Nebraska single malt. It tends to grow on you and is definitely something I want to make sure I order again – NOW. I can not wait for a 10 or 12 year aged Nebraska Cut Spike single malt. AS an NU alum and member of Sigma Cni fraternity I will definitely recommend his outstanding drink!

Cut Spike Distillery is attached to the Lucky Bucket Brewery. I’ve had the pleasure of taking a couple tours here, and have to say it’s great to have a business like Cut Spike in the Omaha area. While there are some other local distilleries popping up, Cut Spike is the first since, well, prohibition. I’ve sampled their vodka on a few occasions, and have to say it’s smooth and potent. Definitely worth the $ 20 or so a bottle for a premium vodka. For $ 50, I grabbed a bottle of their single malt whisk(e)y and enjoyed its unique qualities quite a bit, even though it’s their first batch and is only aged 2 – 3 years. Says the bottle: «The distinguished taste of Cut Spike Single Malt Whiskey comes from premium grains and limestone-filtered water from the Sandhills of Nebraska.» Islay Scotch it ain’t, but smooth and delicious it is(might want to add a dab of water to it though, as it is 86 proof). I wish I didn’t have to wait 7 more years for their first batch of 10-year!
