Charles is a extremely nice guy and interesting to talk to. He did a great job with my hair and explained to me how to best gel and shape my hair. Charles does such a great job because he truly loves what he does. This is probably the best barbershop I’ve been to around east bay. I will definitely be coming back here in the future.

Make an appointment. This location is a barber shop feel, but you’ll need the appointment. Charles knows hair, and is great at what he does. (hence he’s busy!)

Jon G. notes the business listing says by appointment only. Unfortunately, I have no way to know whether that field was updated before or after my review. Further, he says not to negatively affect someone’s livelihood by «your mistake».
He misses the point. First, he’s running a by-​appointment salon, not a barber shop — so he needs to update his Unilocal listing. Second, and more importantly, his tone was snotty and rude. If his livelihood is negatively affected, it’s because of that.

Charles was extremely honest with me about the haircut I originally wanted, and explained why it would not be best with my thinning hair. I appreciated his candor and recommendations for a cool, fresh cut that would work with my hair type.

Best haircut I’ve had this side of the bridge and tunnel. The owner/​stylist does a great job on men’s cuts and he trimmed my eyebrows so I neither look like Andy Rooney or «the Situation». Definitely heading back in when I need another cut.

I discovered Charles through chance when I was next in the queue at Supercuts. Now he’s taking over what used to be Nick’s and transformed it into Chevere. Charles is an all-​around great guy with exceptional skill. I’m always happy with his work. Great personality, fun to chat with. His wife, Semi, helps run the shop and is very sweet. Charles gave the interior some upgrades and a bit of a ‘facelift’ while still maintaining some of the old-​school barber atmosphere. He’s also outfitted it with a TV and little fridge with a nice selection of drinks. When it comes to hair he’s a jack-​of-​all-​trades as he does men, women, and children’s hair. I’ll be coming to Charles until he retires haha!

I first meet Charles when I was in dire need of a cut and did a ‘walk in’ corporate cut shop, during my first cut, he clearly showed he was a master. My hair is not easy to manage, but he tamed it. He was engaging and friendly, even keeping my young daughter engaged in the process … («Really Dad, I need to go with you for YOUR haircut»).
After one or two more cuts with him, as I was giving him his tip I was compelled to give him the Billy Joel line «Man what are you doing here.» Soon after, I was happy to find he had opened his own shop. Now use him religiously often with my daughter willing coming along– she will even ride a bike to the shop from Moraga to Lafayette with me for cut.
This past holiday season, I was passing thru town with my sister from Colorado and stopped in to wish Charles and Semi a happy holiday and my sister was welcomed in and conversations started around world travels and local areas shared by Semi and my sister — just a comfortable place.
Chevere Cuts is a class act in a hard industry and hard town to start a business. I am very glad we have Charles in our town.
As review #20 with five stars, I was thinking do I really need to post…, but yes Charles is that good.

Charles bring a number of years of salon experience with him to this shop and gave me a cut that was exactly what I needed. He has good prices and is also fun to talk to. It’s a nice location with other neat places to shop before or afterwards. I will definitely be headed back.

Add me to the list of people that wish they could give 6 stars. Charles is the best — the haircuts are always great, it’s easy to get a time slot (he’s super responsive to email or phone), and the whole time in the shop is not like an appointment but just feels like spending time with a friend. He and Semi make it a great place to hang out.

I just had my second haircut with Charles and it was just as good as the first. I’ve always had trouble trying to figure out what to do with my hair but Charles had some great suggestions without being too pushy or going off and doing whatever he felt like.
I’d highly recommend him to anybody and the price is very affordable with a discount for students.

You will be treated like a friend here. Charles listens to whomever is in his chair and takes time to get the cut right in this comfortable little salon. We are very happy about this place because our kids refuse to go anywhere else since we met him and… the price is right.

I have nothing but good things to say about Charles and Chevere cuts. I am very lucky I found someone who knows how to cut hair. I moved to Arizona a couple years ago, and frequently come back to visit. I make sure to wait to get my hair cut until I come back to Lafayette!
The barber shop is clean and well kept, and the hours are posted. Thank you Charles and Chevere Cuts for being a quality business that is above and beyond a normal barber shop.

I got to school at St. Mary’s now, but before that, I would get my haircut back in San Jose (where I live) and I have always been disappointed with the way people in SJ cut hair. Whenever I tell them what to do, they always cut it the way they see fit instead of how I instructed them to.
Charles always cuts my hair the way I want! My first time at Chevere Cuts… he walked me through the entire process of my hair cut. He told me step by step what he was going to do (i.e. where he would start my layers, which sections he was going to thin out. etc). Also, one of my favorite things was when I told him that I only wanted an inch off the bottom… he showed me with a ruler how much an inch of my hair was so that it would ensure me that he would only take off an an exact inch and not one centimeter more. I particularly really appreciated this because whenever I tell other places to cut an inch… usually they cut so much more and I end up with my hair being waaaaay too short. My layers came out perfect, he cut the right amount off the bottom, and the thinness of my hair was perfect!
The second time I went into Chevere Cuts… Charles remembered my name, he remembered how he cut my hair the first time around so I didn’t have to give him much direction, and he also remembered the conversation we engaged in when I first came in. I love that Charles is so personal with his customers. It really makes me feel comfortable around him and it makes me trust him even more with my hair. He is so friendly! When he finished my hair the second time I loved it once again… Although, when I got back to my dorm, I noticed that I wanted my hair layered a little bit more and for it to be thinned out. I emailed Charles about my minor changes and he responded right away with a phone call! I came in the next day, and he fixed it FOR FREE. It came out perfectly! He accommodated to any changes that I wanted and he took my direction so well!
Charles is definitely the best! When school is out for the summer and I move back to San Jose, I’m definitely making the hour drive back up to Lafayette to pay him a visit!
