We were in town for the night and randomly picked this place. It was certainly a good decision. We went on a Monday night and the house margaritas were 2 for 1. I got the stuffed grilled shrimp and it was fabulous. The shrimp dinner was also good. The server and kitchen went the extra mile and brought out the meal for our toddler first, which is extraordinary service.

Food is great Cajun food, first time visiting there was a portion issue with my order. Management quickly assisted with my complaint. GREAT customer service. Eat at Don’s!

This was the worst experience that i have ever had at a resturant, the customer service was horrible and we waited for 15 minutes before someone came to ask us for drinks we actually had to ask someone for something to drink, then everyone around us was getting bread and they never brought any to us, the waiter said we had to ask for bread and no one else around us had to ask then the food was not hot and it was horrible.

Service was great, but the food was average at best. Ordered the blackened redfish dinner. The fish really didn’t have much flavor. The only side that came with the fish was mashed potatoes. They were dry and had very little flavor.

Review below was for Dons Downtown– I mistakenly gave Dons on Johnston two stars. Poor Don’s Downtown. What was once an icon of Lafayette cuisine has turned into a has been. The food is mediocre at absolute best. The service is pitiful. The only reason I can tell people still come here is history, old fashion’s, and admittedly remarkably nice people(even if they are inept). Two stars.

Holy mackerel this is some good eats! Friendly and fast service, even for a one person table in the bar. Will be back and bring all my out of town visitors with me!

The food was very average. So when does Cajun cuisine have to equal fried everything? This is 2015 and good food is worth experiencing and sharing. It is time for Don’s to catch up with the times. Stop killing the seafood in vats of oil.

I have been going to Don’s Seafood Hut for many years. The one consistent thing throughout all those years was the inconsistency of the kitchen. But last night enough was enough… First, let me say the the service in both the bar area and dining room have always been first rate and last night was no exception. It is a shame the poor execution by a the kitchen doesn’t support the hard work of the waitstaff. How can an almost entire setting of a meal be so poorly done? How about dry, overcooked, unflavored stuffed crabs with a side of very cold stuffed potato sound? Or a crabmeat au gratin loaded with crab shell accompanied by a side of some sort of sweet green bean mush? With many out of state guests in Lafayette for LAGCOE you would think Don’s would want to serve their best examples of local Cajun food. Instead, they did a great job of plating very poor quality food. If Don’s were on TV last night they would have been«Chopped»! Will I go back, you bet I will because I have had a few really good times there, but the inconsistent food product must improve or «I’m out»!!! 11/22/2015 Update… Went back to Don’s for a late lunch last Friday, all was good, good gumbo, grilled oysters, fried shrimp and great service, and awesome Old Fashion cocktail. All is good again in Don’s world.

Stuffed shrimp were phenomenal. Green beans were fantastic. Mashed potatoes were legendary. That was just the food. The service BEYOND exceeded any service I’ve seen in a while. They forgot my moms order of crawfish étouffée and they not only took her dish off the ticket, they served her a side of her choice while she waited. They also gave us three servings of bread pudding(we had a party of 7 so that was plenty to feed all of us) and kept apologizing for the inconvenience. I’m so happy to know a restaurant still operates like this. I’m going back to Don’s on Johnston for ALL of my future celebrations or seafood cravings. 100% satisfied with zero complaints.

Ok so this is my first time at this location, I’ve tried the one in Baton Rouge and let me say it was not my fave. This location ambiance is much different very social and upbeat. I sat alone yet didn’t feel lonely because of the many conversations and laughter going on around me. I sat at the bar and was able to be front row to witness the cooks grilling my order of oysters! The way the butter and cheese and bacon bubbled as the waiter sat my plate on the bar top I almost forgot wait for my second or of Cajun grilled oysters take a look at the pics and drool away. And if you’re in Lafayette area looking for some great oysters Don’s Seafood is the place to go!

Had dinner here tonight with a large business group and I have nothing but great things to say! I ordered the stuffed eggplant and it was extremely good. It came with a very nice baked potato. Plus, our service was top-notch.

Food was excellent. Service was very good. Prices are a little steep but don’t mind paying for once in a longtime visit. Will return. Boudain balls are awesome!

I usually go here for the oyster special, but really everything else I have tried on the menu has been pretty good. So why only three stars you ask? Well they lost one star because they don’t sell a proper pint of beer. That’s right, they have a full bar and several draught beers but zero pint glasses. Instead they use these 8 or 10 ounce mugs that have glass about an inch thick. An obvious ploy to make you think you’re getting more than you are. I wish they would just charge whatever it costs and get some real glasses. I am a man and when I go out to eat and drink I don’t want some tiny kid sized cup. tl;dr 4 star food and service but forced to drink beer out of cups built for ants

Last week I had lunch at Don’s. We had the grilled oysters with the cheese. I thought they were very oily(swimming in oil/butter). I asked for the grilled seafood sampler. It came out fried. It tasted pretty good. The fries were old. The gumbo was lukewarm and ok. My friend had the bucket of crawfish. He felt it was very average. Maybe we came on an off day.

This is always one of my standard stops will in town for work. The friendly staff is always great, although there can be very long waits. Come here on Monday night for half priced oysters(and make sure you try the«jacked up» oysters — my favorite item in town). Wednesday nights are all you can eat boiled shrimp.

I am glad I didn’t read all the bad reviews of this place before I tried it. I had a business lunch there and found the food and service outstanding. I ate the«Jacked up» Shrimp. Cooked in a special cast iron pan the shrimp had bacon, jack cheese, jalapeño peppers, and Cajun spices. There was a little bloom of spice to the dish but it was very good. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the combination of all the other ingredients really sealed the overall taste for me. Service was great. I would have given 5 stars but the mashed potatoes that came with the lunch serving were not 100% It was also quiet enough so my business acquaintance and I could discuss business without raising our voices.

I saw a review on here about a two for one margarita night… We were fortunate for it to be the night we came last night! The bf got a Maker’s Old Fashioned(apparently they are known for their old fashions) and he was VERY pleased, «the best he’s ever had.» I got a margarita because they were two for one, I was pleased with it, I usually don’t order margaritas out of state(we are from Texas) because they aren’t ever good. I enjoyed these two, especially the free one. We got a dozen oysters for an appetizer, they were seriously the best we’ve ever eaten. We try oysters in every state we go to, these were fresh, very flavorful and reasonably priced. Wednesday nights are all you can eat boiled shrimp for $ 16.99. I got that and my bf ordered the blackened redfish. Both were excellent and we were satisfied. Great service, the waiters and waitresses work as a team. You can also make reservations on the Open Table app which was a bonus, there was a wait for tables and as soon as we walked up and said our reservation, we were seated immediately.

Boiled Crawfish is good but you have to let the soak in the water longer if you want them spicy. The oysters are good but need to be cleaned more thoroughly before cooking. The fried food is great and the staff works hard to please. Atmosphere is clean and friendly.

My family and I came to these place following Unilocal advice for good seafood restaurant, the oysters were really good, Richard our server was nice and attentive, dinner however was very disappointed :(my blacken red fish was very dry, the potatoes taste old, my kids shrimp pasta had no flavor and my wife’s pinto beans with rice not good they taste burn, no manager stop by our table to check on our food, we did not get the chance to express our disappointment, these is why I found myself writhing these review in Unilocal
