We wanted our 5 ½ year old son to experience the many positive attributes of martial arts, both physically and mentally, and searched for a dojo that was grounded in a traditional philosophy of karate. In meeting Sensei Kurobane and his volunteer staff, Senpai Olivia, Senpai Kevin, and Senpai Jordan, we knew our son was at the right dojo. If you read Sensei’s comments on their website you’ll realize this is not a commercialized dojo selling black belts to over anxious parents. There’s a great balance between discipline and fun for the kids and there’s no doubt Sensei and the Senpai’s are fantastic teachers. There are certainly other choices out there between styles of martial arts and studios/dojos, but if you’re searching for more than lessons in punching and kicking, you’ll want to join Sensei Kurobane and his dojo.

An absolutely wonderful dojo with one of the best senseis I’ve ever encountered. Sensei Kurobane is kind, encouraging and immensely — IMMENSELY — skilled. His approach to teaching is enlightened and lacks hype and ego, which, for martial arts, is appropriate. My child is enrolled at Denwakan; she had a black belt already in another martial art and I wanted her to get busted down to white and learn something new — again, with no ego. I could not have made a better choice. I drive a good distance to take her to this dojo and it’s 100% worth it. If you’re looking to learn a martial art or want your child to join a quality dojo, you CANNOT do better than Denwakan Karate. The emphasis here isn’t on combat or even defense(although of course that is taught and taught well), it’s on learning the values of respect and honor, it’s on quieting the mind and harnessing our energy to be used in the best way possible. I cannot think of anyone better to teach these lessons than Sensei Kurobane, and that’s a fact.
