Kelley’s Country Cookin

We came in as a part of 6 on a Sunday late morning and even with the church crowd, there was no wait. Service could have definitely been better. Our waitress was hard to find and we were in a corner so no other servers were passing us either. My sons omelet was cooked incorrectly and we couldn’t even have it corrected because we never saw the waitress again. It contained mushrooms and he is very anti-​mushroom. I basically gave him the other half of my taco and he ended up stopping on the way home to eat again because he was still hungry. We never got a refill on our coffee, not once and we had 5 coffees at our table. The food we did get was delicious (other than the cheese and hashbrown omelet that came with mushrooms).

Good food, large portions, good service, reasonable price. Kelley’s is a great place to meet for breakfast, lunch or dinner in central Galveston County.

We’ve been to this location more times than I can count over the years. They aren’t the best at any one thing but, they are a solid good at just about everything on the menu. The mashed potatoes are real. The Super K burger could be cut in three pieces and still be too much for 1 person. The country fried steak is always more than i can eat so I mostly opt for a burger or the cornbread stuffed chicken breast.
The service is usually fast and the kitchen seems to move quickly. This location can get crazy busy at lunch and during holidays. A full parking lot = they are real busy.

Your ad says you get what you pay but at Kelly’s you get more that you pay for in what way?
We stopped by Kelly’s for dinner in La Marque on Christmas 12/​25/​2015 around 3:00 pm. It was a moderately busy crowd, but we took a seat. As we sat down the Waitresses standing in front of us, ignored us and had a heated conversation of who was going to serve us… right in front of us. We waited on a waitress for 25 min. At 3:25 approx we finally we ordered food. I ordered the fish and shrimp, and my girlfriend the Holiday turkey dinner. We waited another 30 minutes for them to bring out A shrimp platter instead of my fish and shrimp and my girlfriend never got her Holiday Dinner. The shrimp platter was taken back and 10 min later they brought my fish platter and the holiday dinner, with No silverware… we requested silverware, napkins. We were brought plastic to go silverware sets. The other tables had real silverware made of real steel .
My dinner was fine, but my girlfriend’s Holiday dinner seemed to be undercooked and two sides where cold. The Dressing looked and tasted like some sort of goo The green beans where cold just like they came out of the can, the broccoli casserole was hot but everything stuck to together. When we talked with the manager she said «I have tasted it and it was fine». She did not look at the plate and did not taste our food, so I have no idea what she was talking about. She continued as turning away from us, not listening or hearing, interrupted us, asked if we wanted another side dish, then said «Ok, Ok, everything is fine, walking away from the table, leaving us with our mouths open in awe. We could only figure out that she did not recognize the entrée, and thought it was a side dish.
After giving the manager a chance to make this right and her lack of interest to do so. I was hoping that someone in the corporate office would be willing to make this right. I have eaten at Kelly ‘s for years for Thanksgiving and other holidays and never had bad service like i did this Christmas. As we were leaving an elderly couple entered and I feared for their holiday meal. Please don’t let this continue.

Breakfast served all day, large portions, mixed crowd but mostly older folks, families and nearby refinery workers, consistent quality and friendly servers. What more can be said about this well-​known houston depot for country cooking. I always come for lunch and enjoy the daily selection of items that come with 3 sides for $ 8.49.
You won’t find «the best» of anything, just good examples of what comfort food should be like. I’ve visited a few locations around the Houston area and I haven’t noticed much difference between them. I usually order the chicken fried steak.

Excellent service, welcoming atmosphere. Ordered a burger, shrimp & a club sandwich– more than could be consumed at one sitting. We also took home 3 different desserts. I would return if just for a burger & Italian cream cake.
After reading the other reviews, it appears a few folks are seeking a 5 star dining experience on the Gulf Freeway in La Marque! This is a typical Texas diner. It is chicken fried steak and buckles, boots & beachwear. If you are seeking societal flash, 12 pieces of flatware & the whir of crinoline, you and your wallet need to make another choice.
We are fortunate to have Kelley’s as a local eatery. The full parking lot is 5 stars speaking loud & clear.

We arrived for lunch on Sunday. Busy time for staff. Got our menus quickly (it was «seat yourself».) Drink order was taken soon but drinks took longer to arrive. We had a breakfast order, 3 orders from the Specials section and a chicken tender salad.
At this point we decided to use the facilities. They (Men and Women both) had been closed for 15 minutes and that someone was working on them. They weren’t ready 20 minutes later as costumers continued to pour in. No mention was made of the restroom problem at the entrance or by wait staff until the waitress came back in another 20 minutes and told us that it was now fixed. During this time our need exceeded their ability to meet our needs and we walked to the fast food place across the street where there were no problems. (Remember this for later.)
During our absence our food had been delivered
It was cold and tasteless. Crunchy chicken fried steak with a soggy bottom. Our waitress did not ask if she could reheat the meal. Corn was canned corn without seasoning and lots of water. The potatoes tasted like a boxed mix. The breakfast looked good with the eggs cooked as ordered. We had ordered as they were running out of biscuits and missed out on what looked good at neighboring tables. The Chicken Strip salad was the best thing at the table. Fresh crispy tasty tenders on a bed of very fresh lettuce, tomatoes, fresh green onions, shredded cheese, egg, the dressing on the side.
As we were leaving, we stopped to complain to the manager. She blamed the city for the problem with the bathroom. They were there that morning working on them. Then it was our servers fault. She gave excuses and no apologies.
We have no plans to ever stop at any Kelly’s again.

I have not been asked if I needed another beverage. I had to ask about pie. I have sat here with dirty dishes. I observed the waiter, Edwin, go to a table immediately after taking my order to take their order even though I was here 10 minutes before them. Oh, and I was not asked about the quality of my meal until I was done eating and their was a napkin on the plate. So, if your in the mood for a baked potato & could care less about service this is the place for you. However, if you feel morally obligated to always tip well, stay away from here as Edwin does not know Service 101. The food is not that great to boot.

We ordered each a garden salad, that was good. Husband got the Texas size baked potatoe with chicken fried chicken on top, sour cream, chives, cheese and bacon. He loved it! I ordered off the Sunday dinner menu. One entrée and 3 veggies. I got the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, candied yams (thought my husband would eat them, but he was too full) and green beans. All I ate was my steak. The potatoes are fake, broke my heart. Service was great. Place was nice. Friendly family atmosphere. Plus they gave us some good bread. It was all good! This is the first time my 11 month old actually sat there and ate! He loved everything we gave him and even kept eating the good bread with me, lol. We will be going back! Very huge portions. We spent $ 25 with a $ 5 tip. On all this good food…

My friend and I went in at 6pm on a Saturday evening because I was craving Chicken Fried Steak. It was served with a basket of soft, fresh rolls and cornbread muffins. My friend had a grilled pork chop. We both got mashed potatoes (a little lumpy, as freshmade ones often are – yummy), with brown gravy. I had creamy mac and cheese, which I never order, but – GET IT! I also ordered fried okra… i don’t fry at home, so I order at this restaurant. The weather was very hot, and the sweet tea was really good. My friend took home a serving of blackberry cobbler. I hear it was great! The restaurant was pretty crowded on Saturday night. Visit when you can!

This restaurant is in the small town Texas tradition. The food is about as good as it gets for this style of cooking. I have had chicken fried steak, chili, and breakfast and the quantities are always huge. My wife and I can barely finish a «small» chicken fried steak and I cannot imagine any normal human being eating the whole «large» chicken fried steak.
If you love down home cooking and plenty of it this is the place for you — if you are into exotic, low cal, or urban presentation, or wine, then move on.
Service is ok but not great and the cashiers always look they have been eating lemons. Seat yourself casual.

I joked about wanting double mashed potatoes and they gave me double mashed potatoes. Besides the other two that came with the meal! Large chicken fried chicken! Could barely finish my food! Unfortunately that’s not usually a problem! Everything was so good!

I went on a Tuesday and had the shrimp special. It was very filling. The portions are big so you will more than likely be taking some home with you. 11 dollars for what will pretty much be two meals? Sounds good to me!
Excellent customer service as well. I’ll be back for sure.

Chicken fried steak was great – better than Goodson’s in Tomball and Harris Count Steakhouse. Right amount of batter; some places you go, it’s all batter and no steak. Wasn’t tough. Now, the French toast was bleh; had absolutely no flavor – had to keep pouring on the syrup for it to taste like anything other plain toast.

Yummy! It was great! The portions were HUGE! The customer service was good but there was a leak in the roof over part of our table. I told management about it when we asked for silverware but he wasn’t too concerned. I would definitely go back though.

Good homestyle cooking. Excellent breakfast. The biggest pancakes you’ve ever seen and biscuits the size of a saucer. Good burgers and plate lunches. Dinners specials every night. You most definitely cannot eat everything on your plate. Desserts to die for. The coconut cream pie is the best I’ve ever had. And if you don’t like pie, try the coconut cream cake.
The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is that they only have chicken flavored gravy. It’s okay but I like cream (especially with biscuits).

I’m normally on the go so I called my order in. A chef salad with turkey. Portions are huge and fulfilling.

A solid all-​American restaurant. Lot’s of home style food, huge portions at reasonable prices.
We came at lunch time and they were very busy. One of our party was in a wheelchair, in order to get to our table we had to ask people to move their chairs, that was awkward.

Real deal diner. Don’t expect gourmet food.
Do expect huge portions (one plate can feed two), great prices, decent quality comfort food and service with a smile.
This is what I would hope for (but not necessarily expect) when going to a diner.
Diner is huge and very clean.
Recommendations: get the biscuit. Huge, soft and fluffy!
