We’ve been attending IHM for about six years now, since we moved to Holt. We love our parish! It’s very friendly and very diverse(well, for a Catholic church), and the priests, Father John and Father Mike, are wonderful. My husband and I were married here, and our son was baptized here. Our next baby(due in December) will be, as well. There’s Mass every weekday, plus Saturday morning, and five weekend Masses(one on Saturday evening, four on Sunday, including a very convenient 6 p.m. one.). I would like to see more confession times — there’s only one hour on Saturdays — but that seems to be the standard around here.(If you need weekday confession, St. John Student Parish in East Lansing has it after every weekday Mass.) I would characterize IHM as an orthodox(little«o») Catholic parish. There aren’t hellfire-and-brimstone homilies or anything, but Father John and Father Mike definitely are faithful to the Magisterium and its teachings. The Creed is said as written, the eucharistic ministers don’t tap the crumbs from the Host onto the floor(seriously, I know someone who saw that once at their parish!), etc. One thing we like a lot about IHM is that it’s a very family-friendly parish. If you have a wiggly toddler or babbling baby, you won’t stick out like a sore thumb.(I once took my son to St. John in East Lansing and felt awful every time he made a peep … he was the only person there under 18, I think! No one was rude or anything, but I felt like we really stood out.) There’s no cry room, per se, but the lobby is glassed in and has sound piped in, so if you need to sit out there, you can still see and hear what’s going on in Mass. Oh, and there’s also a perpetual adoration chapel next to the church, which is very nice.
