Shades of Time

I forgot my sunglasses back in frigid Wisconsin, so after a quick search of Unilocal,I took a taxi to Shades of Time to do some shopping.
+ Huge selection of sunglasses: Costa, Oakley, Maui Jim, Ray Ban, designer frames, Smith… you get the idea. If it’ll shade your eyes, they likely have it.
— Most of the sunglasses are pricey; you’ll be spending around $ 150 on average
— Prices aren’t displayed on anything; when I’d ask, the owner said, «You can’t afford to cheap out on your eyesight, can you?»
— Super cramped. Very difficult to maneuver around if more than one person is in there.
— Feels a bit disorganized
— Owner/​tender seemed put-​off when we weren’t sure of which style to go with. Almost expected us to each know what we wanted so he could grab it and ring us up and get us out of there.
When I asked to try some non-​polarized Oakleys, he seemed really upset. He kept saying, «They aren’t polarized! They don’t have polarization! You know these don’t have polarization!» Yes. I get it. I understand the benefits of polarization, but there are some negatives (viewing LCD screens, for example).
My girlfriend wasn’t sure what type of sunglasses to get; the owner wouldn’t offer any suggestions for starting points, and when she tried on a few pair and mentioned they were too small because they hit her eyelashes, he said, «well then trim your eyelashes!» He kept insisting she needed glasses that were too small… another pair were squeezing her temples and creating pressure points, and he said, «Those fit perfectly. They should hurt a little.»
What?
I ultimately bought a pair of Oakleys; she didn’t buy anything because of the shopping experience. So, while I don’t doubt that the guy knows his stuff, he sure could use some customer service skills improvement. I appreciate sarcastic, dry humor, but this was more «stay off of my yard» and snarky. I should probably have rated this 2-​stars, but the selection was good, and everything was in stock.

Alan is the man. I had a fantastic experience in my dealings with him. He took care of me in a pinch. So far, I’ve purchased 2 pairs of Maui Jim sunglasses and hope to be able to direct my business his way in the future. Fair price and exceptional service. What more could you ask for? BTW, Daniel M is a tool for providing any type of rating having never patronized this business. It’s people like him that devalue Unilocal.I’m exceptionally happy with my purchase from Shades of Time and my dealings with them.

Alan is great. I’ve purchased four pairs of sunglasses from him in the last 3 years. He isn’t just trying to make a sale and will be straight up honest if they don’t suit your face. Prices are great and I love to support the local guys.
