I second all the good reviews from my fellow Unilocalers! Authentic, fresh, yummy goodness! The salsa is so good! Wanted to try something new and different from my text mex favorites. Had the Carne de Puerto con Calabacitas. Very good, and did I mention the awesome salsa? Lol! Staff are very helpful and friendly. Get there before the lunch crowd.

I had lunch special with cilantro soup and the soup was really good. Service was quick and friendly. Drawback was that they charged $ 2.50 for a can of soda for my friend. Other than that, price of food is on the low side and plates were tasty.

WOW! A must must try authentic Mexican resturant. I ordered the chile rellenos mixto & subed for Mexican spagehti. Delish. They are little pricy for subing and portion sides are too small. These plates tend to be loaded with a pool of oil. You gotta try at least once

yes, its literally a whole in the wall with minimal seating and very cramped. Would not take a guest there as i did. Food is mostly bought, resold and restrooms are very bad. Even desert is bought and resold. All seating is inches within each other. Not good for groups too. Very hot and uncomfortable place to be. Over rated by dishonest reviewers.

Ahhhhmazing pozole and caldo de res. It’s so crazy they don’t even have a sign up, and if you aren’t looking for it you’d miss it. We got there at noon and there was a line out the door the whole time we were having lunch. Will never pass through Laredo without stopping in!

Authentic and delicious! It’s worth the menacing one ways that is downtown old Laredo. Salsa, tostadas, carne de puerco en salsa verde were all homemade. We only wished that they were open for dinner. Thank you! We will definitely return when we come back to Laredo.

I had the Caldo de Res. The portions are huge! More than enough meat in the soup bowl. Everything tasted excellent. The servers were really nice and friendly. The salsa that they give you as a free appetizer was one of the best I’ve had. If you don’t mind being a block away from the border of Mexico, this is a must try when in Laredo. A real hole in the wall type of restaurant.

I love the food and I love the old building. The food is consistently good and the staff friendly. I would rate it 4 to 4.5 during the winter and 3.5 to 4 during the summer. Always confused by the mix of real plates abd foam cups and plastic ware. Overall, worth the trip!

Love this place. Food is excellent. I had the Rib dish, my hombre had the tongue dish, both very good. The best restaurant in Laredo. Located In old building but very clean. This place reminds me of a restaurant in the Virgin Islands.

Hard to find, but well worth the search. Loved the poblano soup and the chicken, my buddy had the caldo which was perfect. Will come again.

I’m originally from San Antonio, and occasionally we stop by Laredo to visit family. This is by far the best place to get some good authentic and cheap food. I had the enchiladas suizas! The portion of food was average, the enchilada green sauce was spicy, and the enchiladas had just enough chicken in them. I don’t normally venture out from the basic cheese enchilada, but I do however highly recommend this dish. The rice and beans were average but honestly, you can be satisfied with just the enchiladas themselves. If you order ice tea, it come in a bottle. I think the company is Pikes ice tea or something. My father had the caldo de res. It came in a huge bowl with beef, carrots, potatoes, and I think cabbage. It was mild in flavor but cooked to perfection as far as the meat and veggies go. It’s another dish I could recommend if you are not up for enchiladas suizas.

Price and taste of the food is good. My favorite is the«pechuga rellena». I LOVE the potato and broccoli soup. I don’t like broccoli but I love their soup. I’ve had horrible experiences however. One time I picked up food on my 30 min break. They gave me the wrong plate and I called to see if they can give me credit or anything. The person did not want to help me out at all. She said to go in but it is far from my work and I only had 30 min. It seems they did not want to keep the customer happy. In addition, the owner rushes you to eat and is kind of an a***olé. But I only go pick up the food.

Food is really good. Had the pechuga de pollo with rice, elote, and beans. The only thing is the chicken was a bit salty. Will have to try the ribs next time.

Good food. Wish they didn’t use instant mashed potatoes and canned corn on their«signature dish» the pechuga rellena. Other dishes are ok as well nothing spectacular. Wow, went back since I was in the area, they’ve gone crazy with their prices! Almost 15.00 a plate w/one drink! I mean the pechuga rellena is good but you can’t justify the price increase with that one item! The pasta is good too but instant mashed potatoes and canned corn??? And they reduced the serving of ready sliced«sandwich» bread from two to one! I’d overlook if it was house made or artisanal but it’s freaking wonder bread. Unbelievable…

Enchiladas suizas – my favorite in Laredo. They make them twice a week – follow El Meson on FB to see their menu every day and treat yourself to them, because they are incredible.(Also try the pechuga rellena – that is, if you can break yourself away from ordering another enchilada plate).

Love love love this place! The seating is a bit tight and they aren’t open very long, but if your in Laredo and have never been here and do not know where to go(and end up noticing that no one really Unilocal out here) then you should def just choose this place! I am out here on business and the first thing I noticed was the abundance of Mexican restaurants here(which is something to be expected). We have eaten at a few of them before we wound up in El Meson. Ill tell you the Fideo(starter) was the best I have ever had anywhere! Chips and salsa were made fresh and super flavorful, my enchiladas were delicious, and my refried beans were excellent(if you grew u eating them you would know the difference in refried beans too. Example if you have already tried Danny’s feel free to compare)! We were so happy with our meals that we decided to come back for a second lunch and ordered their Pechuga Rellena aka«chicken cordon bleu» and it was killer! Added some flavor by getting chipotle sauce on the side to dip it in. Next time your in Laredo and want some Mexican authenticity, don’t be fooled El Meson is what’s up. It’s also nestled downtown right where the St Augustine historical area is so walk around and check out some history!

One of the best surprises in Laredo. El Meson is a charming family run Mexican restaurant that has that home cooked meal feeling. The stuffed chicken with ham and cheese is ok. Not the best thing I tasted but it is good. The reason I give this place 4 stars if for the spicy fajitas de res plate and their excellent lemonade. The fajitas de res is not your typical grilled fajita plate. It comes with slices of sausage in a very spicy flavorful sauce that takes it to a whole other level. The rice and beans are very good and made fresh. And to wash everything down was a very good homemade lemonade. A bit on the sweet side but that’s my preference. Oh and it’s not made from a powder. I would highly recommend this place for lunch if your in the downtown Laredo area. But come early as seating is limited but food comes out quickly.

Laredo’s best Mexican Restaurant. In business now for about 17 years, it offers top shelf homemade dishes that will have back for more. An actual ‘hole in the wall’ restaurant, there is no outside sign. Just go by the address or ask anyone. The building entrance is non descript, but once you open the door, you are overwhelmed by the color, the smiles and the friendliness. The place is small, but they manage to get everyone in without waiting too long. With that… after you finish your meal… don’t hang out too long… but kindly make room for others as they have waited for a table. :) The food is excellent. This visit, had the Enchiladas. I chose two red, one green and one Mole. Sandy, one of the founders duaghters, was extolling how good the menudo was that day, so I ordered some of that too. Delcious. The salsa and chips served ahead are excellent as well. They have a good thing going here, so their consistency of traditional homemade style food has served them well. Any visit to Laredo must include a visit or two here!

I passed this place up yesterday because I didn’t trust the front door. The lack of a sign confuses things too. Made up my mind today that I was going no matter what. Follow your iphone Google map from Unilocal and you’ll find it. It is literally a stone’s throw to Mexico. It might as well be in Mexico. While everyone speaks Spanish, their English is perfect too so don’t sweat it. The inside is small and truly a family atmosphere. It’s bright, colorful and noisy — just what I hoped for. They change the menu daily but there are some standards. My server recommended #13, Pechuga Rellena(Empanizada, Gratinada o banada en crema) I included a photo too. It’s this amazing rolled blend of chicken, ham, cheese… it’s lightly fried and served with spaghetti, mashed potatoes, corn and two slices of white bread to sop up the banana sauce, which is a little spicy but perfect. Be sure to have the Limonada y Jamica! They give chips and homemade green salsa to start and the salsa is great: nice and spicy and chunky. Overall, this is a great family place that should not be missed if you’re here!
