Jai Lu Celebrates The Year of the Horse beginning January 312014. Jia Lu was born to an artistic family in Beijing in 1954, the daughter of Chinese oil painter Lu Enyi. She studied under master ink painter Fan Zeng at the China Central Academy of Art and Design and continued her education at the Toronto School of Art and York University in Canada. She has built an impressive career, participating in more than 200 solo and group shows. In fact, Lu was named one of the 50 most influential people in China by Global Times in 2011, joining the ranks of Jackie Chan, professional athlete Yao Ming, and pianist Lang Lang. I attended Jai Lu’s exhibition. She had a number of watercolor sketches she brought with her, all featuring various types of dancers such as Balinese, ballet and Indian. In each of the sketches I was impressed by how much expression was captured in the hands of the subjects. After viewing the wall of watercolors, I moved my attention to the oil paintings. In Jai Lu’s oil paintings on exhibit, I was engulfed by the intensity of each painting. In my life I have never been so captivated. Almost all of the subjects are women. Each woman’s personality in the painting came across strong, pure, intense, without apology, without being diminished and without pride, I spent several hours in the gallery just studying and reading about Jai Lu and I also noticed there was another artist on exhibit there. The other artist in my opinion showed women diminished, they are bent over, backs to the viewer, draped with fabrics, knees up with bold dark contrasting bush strokes of color which hides the subject from the viewer. This is a start contrast to Jai Lu who allows her subjects to exhibit their full personalities in their full presence. It immediately resonnated with me that what Jai Lu captures is the very essence that a dancer wants to portray onstage, that meeting of oneself and coming to full acceptance of oneself in order that the full presence may be displayed on stage or on canvass. It takes great courage for the artist to understand that and to be willing to let that insensity come through and to have the beautiful skills to be able to express so much. Jai Lu herself is such a warm and good hearted person. We talked quite a long time just about life. She is very interesting and she’s been through so much in her life. I love her personality and it was a pleasure to spend some time with her. Here’s to wealth and prosperity for you, Jai Lu! Year of the Horse!
