UYE: Hike the Potato Knoll at Red Rock Canyon

I did this hike once and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not to far or to tough for most people.

Thank you, Norm, for planning this hike! I consider you to be the Branch Whitney of Unilocal!It was great to meet other Unilocalers. My foster dog and I got a great workout. This hike was a marked trail with not a lot of elevation gain and Norm was a great tour guide pointing out different areas of interest throughout the 4.5 miles. I hope Norm plans some future hikes because I plan on putting this one in my regular rotation.

Was a pretty fun hike. There were neat looking rocks that we were able to pose with while we were trekking along. Additionally, Norm was a great guide, who gave us tidbits about the petrified rock, the flower, we could not have had a great time as we did without him.
This hike also allow us to chit chat and learn more things about one another. We first met up at Albertsons, and then we followed Norm to the parking area. We pretty much stayed as a group during the first half of the hike, then slowly became three groups. But, we never lost sight of any groups.
This hike is not strenuous. It was an easy one. For those who are new to hiking, this would be a good hike to go on. And if you want to have a good experience, you should go on a hike with Norm.

I have to give a great big thank you to Norm K. for organizing such a wonderful morning hike! I’ve recently learned that I love hiking and it was the perfect event to partake in with my friend from NJ, who’s never been here before. Norm was welcoming to Unilocalers and non-​Yelpers alike.
Our hike was 4.6 miles and Norm was a great wealth of information. I felt so fortunate to be hiking with such a knowledgable and informative yet humble teacher. Along the way he pointed out different desert flora, petrified wood, names of mountains, etc. It was so incredible to be doing this with him as our guide because, although I often hike and explore on my own, I never know the true significance of the beautiful things I’m seeing. I learned so much about our local natural surroundings. And what a treat it was to see water in Oak Creek!
Since my friend was visiting and wanted to visit Lake Mead, we didn’t make it to Yard House afterwards, where I’m sure the fun continued. But the hike itself was an amazing UYE that offered my daily dose of learning, beauty, and fun and awesome company :) I hope Norm will consider organizing more of these!

22 peoople and two dogs made our convoy into the beautiful Potato Knoll, and what an excursion it was! Norm was very knowledgeable in explaining all the different desert flora and fauna that decorated this beautiful area of Red Rock. Besides the nice land mines left by the Burros, we also got to see great rock formations and just soak in the beauty of our surroundings.
Yeah, we live in the desert… Desert shmezert… We still got to see a stream of running water! Oak Creek was flowing! Cool and unexpected sight to see, but it was awesome!
4.5 miles and two hours later, our trek was done, but we came away with forming new friendships, lasting memories, and looking forward to future outings into nature with Norm. Thanks for another successful hike Norm! Can’t wait until the next one… ALOHA!!!
Unilocal 100 CHALLENGE 2013−(58÷100) «A Hiking We Will Go!»

Awesome turnout! Norm has held a couple of hikes on Vegas Unilocal,but this was by far the biggest group. I wanna say there were about 15 of us with two dogs.
The hike itself was great. It’s a good length with only a modest elevation gain. The round trip total ended up being about 4.5 miles. I started my GPS late, so I only clocked 4.28 miles. I’ll upload the track shortly. Maybe.
Thanks to Norm for introducing us to this nice hike. Great meeting Unilocalers who enjoy the outdoors as much as I do and even an out-​of-​towner.

This hike was the perfect antidote to 5 days cooped up in the house (and one night in the ER) with an unrelenting migraine. Norm’s count of 22 shows that Unilocalers enjoy active life, too. Started out in the front of the pack… but ended up slower toward the end (and falling 5 times. But I can fall 5x a day in my living room which is flat) Had heard from Ninz that Norm has knowledge of history, geology & geography, botany & more. Sure enjoyed listening to his stories and the items he pointed out.
Was great to meet Daniel S. attending his first UYE & his brother: two fellow NYers. Sis SM and I had a great time. Except when I fell into nettle getting it in unfortunate locations. Hoping the Elmer’s Glue trick works.
This was a terrific and healthy way to start the day, and it was cool to have Anaheim, CA folks join us. Looking forward to more adventures in the great outdoors and bonding time with our CommUnity!
Unilocal 100 Challenge

Today marked a major event in my life of Unilocaling. I had advanced from the cyber world to the physical world of Unilocaling. The Unilocalers that I had known so well from the Internet I would know in the physical world. The major event was attending the UYE: Hike the Potato Knoll at Red Rock Canyon. I want to give three shout outs: 1. Norm. K, 2. Christie. O, and 3. my fellow Unilocalers.
Shout out to Norm. K led an excellent 4.5 mile UYE hike in the Potato Knoll at Red Rock Canyon. He led us through some of the nicest scenery that you will see in Las Vegas. Although I was way in back of the group, when I would catch up with the group, I would learn so much from Norm. It felt like I was on a guided tour. I also appreciate that Norm let my brother, myself, and a couple of other Unilocalers carpool with him. Norm. K concluded a great UYE hike with a lunch at Yard House.
Shout out to Christie O. I greatly appreciate Christie O’s encouragement in getting me to attend UYE’s. She is the Unilocaler friend that told me about this UYE hike. And she let me know that she is also shy around new people. Thanks to her encouragement, I have experienced what it is like to have good times with Unilocalers outside of cyber space.
Shout out to my fellow Unilocalers. It is difficult to meet people for the first time. I am human and get shy around new people. I appreciate that my fellow Unilocalers made myself and my brother feel welcome. My fellow Unilocalers set such a good example, that my brother who never wrote a review before is developing the exact Unilocaling addiction that I have had for two years.
The UYE: Hike the Potato Knoll at Red Rock Canyon and Rum for the Hills, which took place today are my first two UYEs. Because of these two excellent UYE”s, I plan to join my Unilocal community in other events. I have a feeling that when I become more familiar with the community new friendships will develop.

It really is nice when you have a chance to hike with 22 people (my teacher head count) through Unilocal.We went to Potato Knoll at Red Rock Canyon today and did a 4.5 mile hike around the knoll and back to the cars.
Two who joined us were from Anaheim, one was from Chico, California, and one from New Jersey was visiting a friend in Las Vegas and joined us.
I am pleased that we have a number of Unilocalers who like to get in the outdoors and enjoy a hike.
One surprise was coming upon the stream and finding water in it. Oak Creek really had water!
A great day with a very nice bunch of hikers!
