Jammit! Where’s my onion volcano? Okay, okay, Yami Japan, while they do dabble with their hibachi flavors, they aren’t the place to go to if you want to see a shrimp flipped in the chef’s hat. That’s okay though, so long as the food is good. I visited at noon on a random weekday and it was a pretty busy little shop, with almost no free tables, but they did get me all ordered up and seated in just a few seconds. I tried their Teriyaki steak lunch($ 6.99), which comes with the following choices as sides: steamed or fried rice(I got fried), Miso soup with tofu(which I got), or Maki Roll or Cheese tempura First, the positives. The teriyaki steak was super tender, not chewy at all(medium well cook) and had decent flavor. I also enjoyed the Miso soup(more the tofu and green leafy veggies in the miso). I also really liked how they packed my food in a to go box for me because they thought I looked like I was in a hurry(I wasn’t, but kudos for the customer service!) Sadly, the rice was pretty uninspiring and flavorless I have to say, as were the cooked veggies, which were kinda limp, but at 7 bucks, I wont complain so much about the deal. Located on the footprint of Sugarloaf mills, Yami Japan is in a little restaurant strip next to Jersey Mike’s and Kingston 30. While you’d think parking might be limitless, the actual lot in the area of this strip can and will fill up fast, so you just may have to park on the mall parking lot and walk your way back. No big deal though. Customer service was accommodating, friendly and fast, along with some hits, and a few misses at under $ 10. Works for me!

The sushi was fresh and taste amazing. I got the Bento box that starts out at 6.99. Its served all day not just for lunch. The chicken teriyaki and fried taste good(I am normally not fond of teriyaki sauce. I only get an hour lunch at work and this was worth the 17 min drive.

Love this place. Very comfortable to eat at. Family owned and affordable yummy food. I come here for their sushi/rolls at least 4 times in one month. Their ‘Yami sauce’ is a must try.

Food: 2.5 stars Ambience: 3 stars Service/atmosphere: 3 stars Food is just ok. Not exellent nor authentic, but somewhat edible level. I ordered a bento box. Miso soup was kind of bland side without much of flavor from dashi, but it had a substantial portion. Chicken teriyaki was OK… teriyaki sauce was a bit watery. Fried rice was surprisingly made with short grain rice for a non-Japanese owned restaurant, which wasn’t bad. Shrimp tempura roll’s tempura had too much flour in its batter, and it was way too hard and crunchy for a delicate tempura. I didn’t expect much from this place, but I can use this place for an emergency Japanese food cravings. Most of japanese restaurant closed between 2:00– 5:00pm for a lunch break, but this place seems to stay open all day. I will give another chance to this place for different dishes. The price is set a bit lower than normal japanese restaurants, and they seem to have free wi-fi. Maybe if I come here for lunch deals, I might find something I like.

Yami Japan is awesome. You won’t find better Hibachi style or sushi for the price. Great lunch and dinner deals. They make veggie rolls with rice paper special for my wife who can’t have iodine. Great service and affordable

I’ve been to Yami Japan a few times for lunch in the past month and have been satisfied each time. It’s not the best sushi I’ve had, but their prices and service can’t be beat. Be sure to order at least 15 minutes ahead during lunch hours if you’re picking up.

I first dined there yesterday. Upon walking in it was pretty empty and quiet. No one was at the front counter, and I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to have a seat or order at the counter. I stayed at the counter until someone finally came, ordered my food, and had a seat. I later found that if I’d stayed seated awhile, someone would’ve eventually served me like at a regular restaurant. I ordered the $ 6.99 bento box which I read about here on Unilocal.I was overall pleased with both the amount and taste of the food I received. You get a nice-sized portion of fried rice and the chicken I ordered seemed to be mostly white meat. I did come across a few more fatty bits than I would have liked. It wasn’t bad though. I really enjoyed my california rolls and yummy sauce. The atmosphere was nonexistent, but if you’re looking for a quiet place to just grab something to eat– this place is fine. I would go back. Would I bring anyone special with me? Probably not. They have their own open wifi, so that’s nice.

I ordered the spicy tuna roll and the vegetable roll to go. It was absolutely delicious. My husband thought the spicy tuna roll was the best he has had for the price. The bento box is great too. The staff is very friendly. Tried to go on Sunday but unfortunately they are closed on Sundays. Maybe tomorrow!!!

This is BYFAR the best japanese that I have found around my office. I went to lunch with a friend here and was a bit nervous about it being cheapo gross japanese, but I was pleasantly surprised. They do get a bit crowded(because they are AWESOME) but you can always call your order in ahead of time and not have to wait.

As soon as I was putting the first bite of food in my mouth i noticed a HUGE roach walking on the wall next to my booth. DISGUSTING! THISPLACEISINFESTED. I looked the floors and I could see the accumulated dirt. Simply filthy.

My go to place for fast, affordable and yummy hibachi! I love the Bento box! It’s available all day and for the price of 6.99 you get a choice of meat(I usually get the teriyaki chicken), with fried rice, and steamed veggies. Also four piece of sushi. I usually get the chicken tempura roll with my bento box! This place is usually run by a lady and a male. I think its a cute family own business. Give this place a try! Its affordable and super tasty! :)

Sushi — two stars. Miso soup — five stars. Service — four stars. I had the rainbow roll, and it was not awful — the ingredients were good quality — but the rice was a little overcooked, the roll was a little loose, and there was a bone in the salmon. The miso soup, on the other hand, was the best I’ve ever had. I will probably return here just for the soup.

I got five take-out rolls the other day. The sushi was wonderful — fresh, fairly-priced, & nicely presented(in take-out boxes!). The two ladies at the register & preparing the sushi were warm & all smiles. I agree with the down-side being the lack-luster décor if you were planning on dining it, but for the quality & bang for your buck, I want to give it a 5 out of 5.

BEST. SUSHI. CHEF. EVER. The sweet sushi chef is amazing. I’ve eaten sushi in high end, highly rated sushi restaurants in Atlanta, Tennessee, and Southern CA, and she can go toe to toe with the best of them. Don’t like sushi? No worries. They have many other items to choose from. We love the teriyaki steak and hibachi steak with grilled veggies and an excellent fried rice. Their avocado salad is one of my other favorites and my son loves their miso soup. The only downside is the décor. It’s basic. Nothing fancy at all, but in my humble opinion the food, service, and the modest prices make this a 5 star.

While Yami isn’t «high class» sushi that more experienced diners may be looking for, it is an excellent starter place for the beginning sushi lover. They have a great lunch deal(soup or salad plus 2 rolls for 7.99) and great prices for specialty rolls. We had the bagel roll, avocado and cheese roll, spicy tuna roll, alaskan roll, and tempuratation roll. I HIGHLY recommend the tempuratation(specialty) roll– the flavor is great and we were given 10 pieces for roughly 8 dollars.

I was craving chicken teriyaki and found Yami Japan on Unilocal. The complimentary reviews gave me some high hopes. The website and online menu seem to be down, so I took a chance and called the number(found by texting Google… I think they changed numbers because the listed one online is out of service). I placed my order with the woman who answered the phone. After I placed it, she said«OK, thanks BYEBYE». Huh? She didn’t take down my name, or number, or give me a total of the food? So weird. And she didn’t hang up, either. I think she set the phone on the counter to give the cook the order because I could hear some background noise. After a few futile«Hello?“s, I hung up and headed over there, hoping for the best. I walked into an empty restaurant, save for one gentleman who appeared to be a regular and was familiar with the staff. Sure enough, they had my order. I guess they didn’t need my name due to a serious lack of customers. Kind of sad. They gave me a container of yummy sauce and I was on my way. I got home and cracked open the container of soup. It was not miso soup, as I expected. It was a clear chicken(?) broth with thinly sliced mushrooms and what I think was tempura. It was pretty tasteless and bland but that was OK because the teriyaki was a bit salty. But get this… I could see something clear floating in my soup and mistakenly thought it was tempura(stupid, I know). When I realized I was chewing on piece of plastic, I immediately pulled it out. WTF. It was a clear plastic wrapper, like off the bottle of something. Ugh. After I adjusted to the slight saltiness of the entrée, I devoured the whole thing. The chicken pieces were all white breast meat, which I liked. I really don’t think I will be back after this, though.

I just ate here today for lunch with my boyfriend. It wasn’t packed for lunch. I wanted to try it since we always pass it on our way to Discover Mills. It is located at one of the entrances to Discover Mills. We ordered an appetizer and off of their lunch section of their menu(Lunch Special Rolls). The lunch special is 7.99 for 2 rolls(or 1 roll and 4 nigiri) and either soup or salad. The Appetizer: Gyoza(8) which are dumplings. You have a choice of either steamed or pan fried. We chose pan fried. It was yummy and crisp on the outside. It came with soy sauce. My boyfriend ordered spicy salmon roll and the crunchy cucumber & avocado roll. I ordered the crunchy California roll and the crunchy shrimp roll. We both chose miso and it tasted like the average miso soup you have at other restaurants. However, I liked the fact that the miso soup here has chunks of tofu and lots of kelp. The sushi rolls were«a-ok». Not the best; however, it’s not the worst. It was just average. This is a great place to eat lunch at if you are in the area and is craving sushi at a great deal.
