Stopped today for a burger before getting on 1 to the coast. A little confusing we walked into the store and were told if you want something off the grill go outside to the right? Okay! Well after we figured it out we had one of the best burgers we’ve had in a while. My husband had the sunset burger and he said it was excellent. I asked for the aloha but with the salmon patty, which they were happy to do. It was fabulous. Salmon with pineapple, cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and teriyaki sauce. Yum. And don’t leave until you’ve had the blackberry sundae… Very good food.

Best oysters ever!!! The homemade salad dressing was also excellent. After riding out bikes south from the Oregon/California state line for the past 4 days, The Peg has the best food of our trip!

MUSTSTOP! Thier grass-fed burgers are SO delicious! Wish I took a picture of it! Cute atmosphere. So easy to drive by and pass it, it just looks like a convenient store but come through the gate on the left and it’s a large patio, plenty of tables. I imagine this place is hopping on weekends with a stage for bands! The other side is a cute little garden looks like someone’s homestead. Love the ambiance! One of my favorite finds and meals! Inside the convenient store you can get espresso; I got a cold brew iced coffee. FYI make sure the blonde girl makes it she makes it perfect! My 2nd way back a brunette up front(the not so friendly one, who was annoyed I placed a coffee order) well she wasn’t sure how to make it and yep she really had no idea, I think she took old hot brewed coffee and added water and WAY too much milk. It was awful, I had to dump it. :-(Otherwise, the café in the back makes really, good food, little pricey but for me worth every penny! Also, get their world famous blackberry ice cream. So delicious!

After towing our fifth wheel into the evening hours, we were famished and there isn’t much in the area. Billie at Redwoods River Resort told us to go here for the best burger around(and unbeknownst to us, she called ahead and asked them to keep the grill open for us! Where does someone ever do something so kind like that, let alone in California?!) I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and my man had the tri tip sandwich. Did you know ciabatta bread isn’t supposed to break your teeth when you bite into it? Well, they surely are in on this secret because OMG the best ciabatta bun I have ever had in the history of ever. We are going back tomorrow for bbqed oysters and the fun atmosphere. What a gem of a place!

Order from the grill around the back. BLT sandwiches on toasted wheat — bacon cooked to order and juicy tomatoes. Salmon burger on a fresh French roll — great condiments and a piece of salmon grilled perfectly … With delish side of slaw. For $ 8.50 — what a find!!!

Putting simple but well-crafted diner food into a pokey novelty shop in the middle of a redwood forest is pretty cool. Bacon cheeseburger and salmon burger both turned out great for us. It would have been a five-star experience if there was some actual pegging happening on the stage.

Came here for Hickey Fest in June and though we were camping and had food to cook we ate dinner here and on some days lunch as well. Order the barbecued oysters and the salmon burger. BESTTHINGEVER. They also have a ton of healthy food options on the menu and they also have a variety of healthy options for sale in the store. This place is a must. The latte’s are good, their little book section has so many great books. This general store slash restaurant like is a gem along the 101

Love this place, I’ll definitely be back. Love camping across the street and afternoon drinks and dining in the patio in between dips in the awesome swimming hole. I could get lost in the store so many fun unique trinkets! Great food, staff and convience store!

patio dining, huge, delicious burgers with lots of fresh toppings and blackberry sundaes for dessert. We were there on a Sunday night and there was live music. Definitely worth a stop if on that portion of 101.

Amazing burgers; great atmosphere. We sat outside and it was a beautiful day. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was because they have no kids menu. $ 8.50 is a lot for a burger for a toddler.

Seen this place grow since the early 70’s. Super convenient if you are camping and are challenged in the cooking arena! Prices are high on things, but worth it, as they stock quite a varied selection of goods and food. BBQ is really good, but fries would be great if they were on the menu. Oh, the monster school bus is is a tribute to those with, lots of parts, lots of time, determination, and a welder!

Wow! What a great find on the 101. From the grass-fed hamburger, to the 4th of July special, nothing disappointed. The fourth of July special was a rack of baby back ribs, baked beans, potato salad, grilled corn on the cob. Everything was amazing. My husband and I shared a wild blackberry Sundae that was phenomenal. The outdoor seating was covered by an old parachute and the misters did a fabulous job at keeping us cool. Very laid back environment.

The Peg House is bursting with character and quality. I came here for Hickey Fest this past weekend and had such a lovely time — basking in the charm of this venue. You can tell that the owners of this inviting space — must be special people — since the entire staff radiate a very real passion for this unique space. With a new outdoor redwood stage perfect for rockin’ bands and a shaded patio area — The Peg House is the place to be in Leggett. Boasting a well rounded menu with standouts such as the Wild Salmon burger with special Mendocino mustard, and barbequed oysters — The Peg House is not only a solid spot to watch a show — but it’s also a superb place to eat a delicious and affordable meal. If you’re in the area — don’t miss a trip here. Grab a warm bite and soak up some warm vibes in the warmth of the Mendocino sun. Trust.

What a delight it was to stumble on this place directly off the 101! We were sad to miss out on their BBQ Oysters(They were out) so we tried their burgers– fantastic! Local Humboldt Grass fed Beef, big enough for a meal. Their coleslaw was phenomenal– pretty sure I detected some wasabi in the mayo dressing– genius! It might be too spicey for some people, but it was a delight for us. They have a large area for concerts/hootenanny’s so I bet this place would rock during a live show or festival. There is kitschy general store too with anything you might need or not need. Yes, they have Johnny-on-the-Pots for bathrooms– but it makes sense with the number of people(drinking beer, eating rich food, etc), and it conserves water in our crisis California drought so I am all about it!

In all the years the peg house has been open I have never and I mean NEVER had an employee put a condom(as a joke) on top of my pickle let alone any other food from there… Its just sad that the new owner has let this place fall so far down da tubes…(having an employee that would make such a bad choice to taint food) van one say health code violations… Love the oysters and BBQ patio but guess I’ll have to watch very very close when getting food from here now

WOW. What a wonderful surprise! I was not looking forward to eating here with the group I was with, but by the end of the meal stop, I wished I Iived closer to Leggett, CA. Upon arrival, there’s a large quaint patio with overhead covers for shade. On one end is a stage for occasional music and on the other end was the ordering counter. I just got the regular burger, thinking nothing of it. I was completely blown away by the burger though! I’m not sure what they did to it, but it had such wonderful flavor in the meat. Everything about that burger was savory. The meat was juicy and fresh, full of seasoning. Definitely one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. #2 on my list, just below one I had in Vegas. Free refills on iced tea! Friendly staff. These burgers are definitely worth the stop if you’re passing through!

In the middle of Standish-Hickey State Park — on the east side of the 101(where the old black and white cop car sits) you will find one of the best hamburgers around. Humboldt grass fed beef burgers. Order food around the side to the left, not in the convenience store. Sit under the parachute and enjoy a great burger and fries with a fresh lemonade or cold beer. The Peg House is a great place to stop when you are in northern Mendocino county. A rest area is there as well, public rest rooms are located behind the old gas station, to the left of the store and outside the fenced in stage, eating area. Good to know when you’re on the road in the middle of nowhere. Live music plays a lot of weekends during the summer months. This little road side attraction stage comes alive with people on the weekends — lots of great music passes through and it seems to have a great vibe every time we have been there. The convenience store is just that, pretty much all the basics plus a short order grill and small sitting area — gift shop and tourist souvenirs also. 92

There are some days on the road when I wish that I were William Least Heat-Moon. And then there are those rare moments when I’ll bet that he wishes he were me. Well, Memorial Day weekend 2013 on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at the Peg House was definitely one of those latter moments. Blue Highways, if you haven’t wikipediaed it before, is WLHM’s account of a 13,000 mile lost-my-job-divorced-my-wife-so-I-might-as-well-take-a-really-long road trip, which was completed in 1978 – 79, and published in memoir form a few years later. It’s a great read and an inspiring way of seeing the world beyond the headlines and interstates that speed us and the things we buy across the continent. Think of BH as Travels with Charley, but without the dog, or On the Road, without the drugs. Either way, it’s a secular/spiritualist guide for how to spot the things that are unseen but never far away, hidden in plain sight on the peripheral edges of your vision. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance would also produce a similar effect, but for my money, Blue Highways is the more accessible and less angsty read. So … Peg House, huh? Roadside attraction on Highway 101, just like the Trail of the Giants and those drive-through trees, right? A cute gift shop, a funky gas station, and nice spot to get some greasy spoon grub before leaving Leggett in your rearview mirror? No. Well, yes, if you aren’t really looking and don’t take the time to slow down from highway speed to the tempo of a beating heart and not a horsepowered engine. Because if you do actually come here, on a warm spring weekend when live music is filling the air, Humbolt Bay oysters are roasting in BBQ sauce and garlic, and Fort Bragg beer is flowing from the tap, when people of all ages and lifestyles are hanging out, listening, eating, living, drinking, and loving the world, then you’ll no longer see this as a «roadside attraction.» Instead, you’ll see it for what it really is: a hometown, blue highway destination, where redwood trees loom and human communities linger together, listen to each other, and laugh a little(or a lot), before the ephemeral moment ends, some of the people go, and others stay, and then it’s just Leggett and you’re just another man or woman behind the wheel of another car or rig, headed at 55 mph down a yellow-striped highway to home, or to the next stop on your itinerary, or to nowhere at all. Sunset Magazine supposedly raved about the bacon burgers here. Whatever. If it were my money(which it was, in this case), I’d go with a half dozen BBQ oysters, a wild salmon burger, a garden salad(add sliced tri-tip if you’d like. I did), and a Blue Star Hefeweizen from North Coast Brewing Co. It’s all made, caught, or brewed fresh, with honestly and the little bit of Northern California love — which makes for tasty bites and satisfying sips. Peg House, huh? Maybe you could slow down, breathe a little, and check it out, next time. Not as a roadside attraction, but as a blue highway destination. There is a difference. In this case, it’s a difference that really and truly matters.
