Taj Mahal in Liberty ISNOMORE. I give 5 stars for their valiant effort to stay in business at that location. We will miss them. Not sure how soon we will be able to cross the river and visit their location in Waldo area. We enjoyed the variety they added to Northland Indian food. We knew that some of the staff had health problems so hope they are better now and that was not the reason for closing. Thank you from all of your many friends out here North. Only last week I ran into fellow patrons at our local«Chinese Gardens» and we all remembered our last meal with you. Best luck to you in the future.

My husband and I moved here from New York, so we have had excellent Indian food. The food at Taj Mahal was mediocre at best. The aloo paratha tasted like a basic naan bread. The chicken vindaloo tasted basically like chicken with tomato sauce. The chicken jalfrezi was decent but not too flavorful. The chicken tikka masala, which is the staple of every Indian restaurant, was not too good. Service was very good, the place was clean, and the atmosphere was welcoming, but again the food left much to be desired.

Sooo good!!! I am moving up to Liberty in a few months and cannot wait to have this close to home! Their butter chicken is amazing! My husband had the lamb and he said it was the first time he has not had lamb with the gamey favor and absolutely delicious. They are so friendly and accomodating too!

I know Harry personally and when they opened I referred not only my then boss but many clients. I noticed stomach upset each time I ate so please be aware of this. Something is either being stored that shouldn’t or it is not being prepared properly. I love Indian and Zona Rosa or Seva are the best places to eat Indian in the Northland as of now. My husband is Indian so we eat curry and Thai a lot. Harry had a problem with honoring coupons especially from Groupon. If you have coupons let the customers use them. This was embarrassing for me when my boss brought one in and was told by Harry to hang onto it he wouldn’t let him use it. I may go back I haven’t been in a year or so.

Lunch time is always the best time for Indian food, why you ask? Well, that’s when Indian restaurants offer their buffets! Cost-wise, it’s a steal as Indian food can be pretty pricey. So far, Taj Mahal seems to be the cheapest at just under $ 10 per person. Other restaurants such as Seva and Taj Palace are about $ 2 more. Taj Mahal is a bit of a drive from downtown where I currently live, however, I am always up for trying new places. The interior/décor is not lavish like, say Swagat in Zona Rosa. It’s your average restaurant with simple tables and booths with a few Indian posters/art on the walls. It’s comparable to Taj Palace in Westport. The picture of a woman/girl right at the 2nd entryway definitely catches your attention, maybe a frightening way, in my opinion. Now as for the food, I think it was just decent. Among the many Indian restaurants I’ve visited in the Kansas City area, it ranks last. Not to say Taj Mahal is a bad restaurant, it just isn’t up to par in my books. Outstanding praise for: –The 3 sauces normally served alongside the table were delicious and probably the best compared to the other restaurants. These 3 sauces are: the green mint/cilantro chutney, the brown sweet sauce, and the pickley red sauce. These paired very well with the naan. –This fried bread or potato was delicious. It was crispy but the batter was packed full of flavor. –Good service as water was refilled almost instantly. What I found was a bit lacking: –At around 1:30p, the food was mostly leftovers(their buffet ends at 2:30−3p). They didn’t refill any dish except the basmati rice. There were also missing items such as the buttered chicken. I wish they restocked the goods… –The basmati rice was too much like steamed white rice –The tandoori chicken lacked flavor and needed more char in the taste. –They didn’t have those crispy flat chip like snack that is served in the beginning of the meal(wish I knew what this was called!) –No lamb dishes in the buffet Everything else was decent. Again, Taj Mahal is definitely not bad for the price. Seva, which is just around the corner in Liberty as well, outshines it in almost all aspects.

If you have not made it to the new Wednesday night buffet, check it out soon. Even if I am at the buffet I still order the kabali nan which is my favorite of the nan flavors. I have found the service attentive. The only thing I might do is if you don’t like spicy foods ask at the buffet as they are not marked. They will make food with as much or little heat as you like when ordering off the menu. Closed. Try in Waldo area of Kansas City

Maybe this new location of Taj Mahal is lackluster, or maybe I walked in with higher expectations than I should have? The food was good, but there was still something about Taj Mahal yet to be desired. Don’t get me wrong, the food was good — flavorful, and it still hit my insatiable indian cuisine spot — but, maybe I’m just too used to Seva. The restaurant wasn’t busy when my mom and I, along with a couple of her friends, came in for lunch last week. But there was only one person running the front of the restaurant anyway. This was fine, as he was attentive and ready to help us in any way he could, but something about there only being one person to help customers just didn’t sit quite right with me. Nonetheless, we all headed to the back where the lunch buffet was and we loaded our plates. The buffet is in a small prep area that opens up to the dining room and into the kitchen. I thought it was a little strange that restaurant patrons were allowed to come back into a room like this, as there was a soda machine and glasses on the counter on one side that I would assume were not free game to use. But, the area was clean and organized. As I said before, the food was good. It was flavorful and satisfying, however, I would say that some of the steamers weren’t turned up warm enough as some of the dishes could have been a bit hotter. I tried a little bit of almost everything, but my favorites were the beef curry, chili chicken and chicken tika masala. Service was good, however it would have been nice to see someone else in the dining room to help out the owner and to give additional help with customers should any kind of problem occurred. Over all, I’d say that there are some areas that Taj Mahal could improve on, but I enjoyed my visit and the food was pretty good. Is it a first choice? No. Solid 3rd? Yes.

Imagine going all the way to Liberty MO and getting SUPERB Indian food. Flavorful, hot, fresh, plentiful, a great variety of sweet and savory, FREEHOTCREAMYCHAI, selection of unusual pickles and relishes, tasty garlic naan and– A FRIENDLYANDGRACIOUSHOST! We were treated as if we were honored and valued guests whose taste and choices were cared-about and really mattered. Enjoyed wonderful conversation with the owner after a meal that truly ‘sang.’ We were celebrating a family birthday and this was the perfect way for social dining, sampling each other’s choices, and trying new flavors and textures. THANKYOU!

My husband and I love Taj Mahal. We have been 3 times now and each time the service and food is fantastic. It has definitely become one of our favorite Indian Restaurants in KC! Love it!

Wow, another Northland choice for Indian food! Now no matter which side of the Evil Interchange I’m on, I can eat Indian food without running the Flintlock Rd to 291 Strip of Death. My three companions and I had a very enjoyable lunch; buffet seems to be the only option available at that time, but everything was very good, with a wide variety of dishes to satisfy anyone-vegetarian, adventurous, or those new to the cuisine. My favorites were Chili Chicken, with the tang and color of Sriracha sauce without the intense heat, and Chicken Tikka. They also had a goat dish(don’t remember the name) that was surprisingly good. I’ve never eaten goat before, and it was neither tough nor gamey like I feared. As previously reviewed, the interior is comfortable if sort of plain, but there’s lots of room to move around back and forth to the buffet. And the service(just like any other Indian restaurant I’ve ever been to) is gracious and attentive without being overbearing. I was also delighted to learn that these folks also own the Taj on one of my favorite hangouts, West 39th Street!

Best Indian food in KC. Service is always great and if you ever tried to tell me that this place wasn’t perfect in every way, I would lose all respect for you.

Suddenly the competition for Indian food is intense in the Northland. With two Indian restaurants in or near Liberty(Taj Mahal and Seva), and the oft-hailed Swagat in Zona Rosa, Northlanders have not only one option for Indian, which is more than most of all of East KC, but three great options. One review isn’t going to settle the competition either, all three have been really well reviewed by many Unilocalers. I’ve been to each several times and in my humble opinion… They all have their strong points. Taj Mahal did indeed get through a rough few weeks when they opened in November of 2011. They’ve added more décor and the once wide open space feels warmer. Staff is well trained, food always arrives quickly and exactly as ordered. They are open to modifications and have always been very kind. They can still make a couple changes to improve. The lighting is too bright and it still feels too cafeteria-like. It’s much improved over the opening though so if you haven’t been lately, give them another try.

Wow!!! This had to be the best Indian restaurant I have ever eaten. Im from NYC and been to many Indian places but they don’t compare to this one. The meat is very tender and the curries are so flavorful and everything is so fresh. If you are in Liberty, MO you must stop by and experience the great food provided by this place.

Being that I am Indian, I expected average food. Because, of course, I think I know how to cook and how the food should taste. WRONG! This place knows how to prepare food. I usually order meat dishes, why would I want to order vegetables? Because these guys know what they are doing, thats why. I ordered Malai Kofta and my dad ordered Bindi. Both are excellent. I can’t wait to try meat dished next time!

I was so happy to find this place. I work in a 24 hour industry which doesn’t always afford me the luxury of traveling over the holidays. So I have two Christmas traditions I either fly home and do the same family dinner that I grew up loving. But on years when I’m on my own I treat myself to a giant Indian dinner with all my favorites(read has leftovers for days). Sadly I found finding an Indian restaurant open on Christmas day challenging! After much Unilocaling and several phone calls I finally found Taj Mahal! Saving my Christmas tradition was enough to earn them 4 starts but they wowed me with there service and food! I enjoyed the Shrimp Korma(cooked to perfection), Garlic Naan, Rice, Eggplant Pakora and Kheer(light and sweet rice pudding)! All was extremely flavorful! But I was really wowed by the service. I ordered take out and they brought me complementary Chai while I waited and took the time to learn what my name was and my favorite dishes. That’s rare! True, it not a highly decorated location with tons of ambiance, but I’d rather drive a bit for great food and service any day.

First time trying Indian Buffet in KC. Restaurant is in plaza with Bank across from Bowling alley. I tried the Chicken Curry which was real tender and moist, Chicken tikka misala my favorite usually but at this restaurant seemed a bit sour and tomato saucy causing minor sourish flavor, but that didn’t stop me from refilling my plate with more Chicken Masala. Chicken manchurian I didn’t care for as much since the meat was a bit dry and spicy for my taste. Beef curry I didn’t try a lot of since they never replenished the beef, but curry sauce was decent and the small piece I tried of my hubby’s was soft. But my hubby liked the beef curry the most. Okra dish was healthful. Cube of wheat was weird, not really flavorful. But then deep fried wheat in syrup was a little better. Naan of course was yummy with sauces and spinach mix which dipped with Bhutan(Naan looking bread but thicker triangle in buffet line, which was greasier than the Naan on table.) Windex wiping was happening like other reviewer mentioned but I didn’t get backlash of spray and wasn’t close to tables they were cleaning so it didn’t bother me. But I can see how it would if I got hit and was trying to eat. Ordered Mango Lassi drink $ 2.95 which has a thick strong mango flavor but not bad to try at any Indian restaurant since I think it’s an Indian signature. Mango Lassi(yogurt shake with mango pulp) Finally, I forgot to mention that since most dishes were mild enough for me to eat it was good for me. But for those who want spicy indian food this is not on the spicy side. The buffet did not have samosas which would’ve been a cool appetizer. Selection seemed mainstream and would’ve been nice if they refilled the beef, but I did see them refill the chicken tandori which was after I was already done with 2 plates and full.

After a few weeks open, we gave Taj Majal a try. We loved their southern location and rejoiced that Liberty would finally have an Indian restaurant. I liked the crisp ambiance, but it did seem a bit bare inside at times. The service was attentive, and the owner was friendly — even providing TWO servings of the normally free dessert to accompany our meal when we mentioned our favorite Indian restaurant was typically the one at Zona Rosa. The chicken tikka was tasty and my BF’s butter chicken was on par. The garlic naan bread was also very tasty. I would say that the solid food, prices that are pretty much the standard, and the personal attention put forth by the owner means we’ll be back again — maybe to try the lunch buffet next time($ 8.95)
