These guys were amazing. It was my first time fishing for tropical fish and I was fascinated by the whole experience. Keith and Jeff were so knowledgeable and willing to answer all my questions. I hooked a mahi mahi and they gave great instructions to pull it onboard. I was able to reel it in myself with their instructions, no help required! Best experience of my life. They also handled sea sick passengers with care and dignity, ensuring everyone walked away with a story to go home with. The boat was clean with a flushing toilet and the scenery was amazing. Everyone caught a fish and at the end of the day, they were very generous with giving us filets to cook at our hotel. The recipe they recommended was amazing and I’ve never had better fish to eat.

My son, daughter and I had the time of our lives today. Jeff and Keith were an awesome crew, a finely oiled machine. All three of us each landed good size Mahi mahi. The other two fishermen bagged an Ono and good sized Tuna. We have done other fishing charters but this was one of the best ever. The water was choppy but Jeff was an excellent Captain, maneuvering us to seize the best opportunities.

I read the reviews after my trip. Honestly, I’m quite surprised to see such mixed reviews. I thought they were extremely knowledgable, efficient, and yes— friendly. The rain was rolling in but Jeff rerouted us and remained flexible. It’s nature people– can’t predict the weather– water conditions– or where the fish will bite– but they did an outstanding job pointing us in the right direction. I would definitely recommend these guys to anyone going out for some fishing. Awesome day out catching some delicious fish!

My husband and father went fishing with Breakaway this morning. They arrived at the dock early, but neither the captain or the deck hand were there. The captain finally arrived 20 minutes AFTER the scheduled departure time, then managed to fall in the water while getting the boat ready. The deck hand arrived even later and the Breakaway was the last boat to leave the harbor. The actual fishing trip was okay, with the exception of the captain being unfriendly — although the deck hand was a nice guy. However, after being the last boat out of the harbor, the captain was also the first boat to call it a day and head back. Last boat out & first boat back — they felt a little cheated. My dad was out with this company 6 years ago with a different captain & had a much better experience.

I fished with these guys in December 2015. Boy they were efficient, treated us with respect, and were very aware of our safety the entire time. It was a small boat and all caught either a yellow fin or skip jack tuna! I really wanted to take some fish back and turn it into sushi but had heard in Hawaii fisherman only give you a small portion to take home. Breakaway was REALLY generous about their portion size. Great trip, great fishing stories, great service.
Cost around $ 150 for 4 hours

I should have done more research prior to my wife and I going out with Jeff. There were 5 on the charter. We spent the first couple of hours jigging for our bait and then you travel to the buoy and begin drifting for tuna. One guy was sick so that left 4 of us to fish and the way his boat is set up you only have two lines in the water. In effect you may have a pole in your hands for 30 minutes as you have trade off. We catch a couple of small yellow fin and get back to the dock Jeff asks us if we want any fish. I am thinking to myself no I just wanted to pay you for a 4 hr boat ride!!! You say yes you want your fish and then he asks how many people are you feeding and measures out your fish! Likes CASH — could of and should have been a lot better.

I found Breakaway when my charter fell through. Another captain I had called was full but recommended Jeff highly. I spoke to Jeff and althoough it was a shared charter and a full one (5 anglers) on only a half day (4 hrs) I decided that I wanted to gamble and fish anyway.
I have fished charters from Alaska to Mexico and on Oahu, I know I’m not a pro but I know what I am doing and what to expect.
This is a smaller boat but its a good one and they stow their equipment carefully. Jeff and Keith have worked together for a long time and it shows. Their job is to make sure you get fish, if you are after a specific species then better be prepared to assume the risk that that particular fish may not jump on your hook. These guys are professional and they have a job to do, so don’t expect much small talk. They aren’t rude, just focused.
Typical for Hawaii you set you lines as soon as you leave the harbor and make your way out. Nothing bit on troll but once we hit the ledge they re-​rigged and we put 3 skipjack on the decks. A few were cut for bait and then they rigged us for tuna, we pulled in 4 plus another skipjack. None of the fish were huge but even a 30lb tuna fights HARD.
My only issue was that I was fishing a light rig and had hooked a pretty good sized skipjack, instead of gaffing the fish, Keith tried to lift it by the light line. It snapped the line as soon as it cleared the water. When I brought in my next fish, tuna, he tried the same, I thought about asking for the gaff but the line was 65lb and should have held. Snap, gone. My last fish of the day was a tuna and Jeff jumped in with the gaff before I had a chance to ask. He took a while to gaff it and I had to turn the fish twice along side the boat, but we got it. Frsh grilled tuna, yum.
Take it how you will and make your fishing choice. No crew is perfect and these guys made mistakes, but these guys definitely put us on fish. In all honesty I would use them again but not as my first choice, and I WILL ask for a gaff next time.

Excellent day out on the ocean. Jeff was an outstanding captain and showed us a great time. This is a real deal offshore fishing experience, get ready for a bumpy wet boat ride and the opportunity to catch some real fish. Jeff is a long time Kauai local with great knowledge and experience. Done our fair share of fishing off NC & Fl and this was top notch. Went home with a cooler full of fish as well with no trouble getting it back to Cali on the plane.

Seas were rough, however the captain and first mate were amazing! We caught 8 mahi mahi and 7 hooked at once. Keith and Jeff gave us great direction and helped us get the fish in. They were so nice and I would recommend this trip to anyone. Make sure to get in the captain seat to reel in your fish. They gave us a lot of fish and you could tell that they cared about our safety. If you get sea sick take plenty of medicine before.

First time fishing in the ocean, and could not have asked for a better captain and first mate.
We had our 3 children ages 17,13,and 10 with us. They made sure our kids were well taken care of the entire time. Very helpful in every way. Went out @ 6 am and caught 4 fish during the 4hr charter. The price is very fair considering all these guys do. Just show up and fish. Everything else is done for u. Even Got to take some fish home. Will definitely be back to fish with this crew. I had high expectations going into our fishing trip, but was disappointed. Jeff seemed nice, but his partner Keith did not go out of his way to be friendly. We didn’t catch anything (which happens), but it didn’t seem like much effort was made on their end for us to to have a good time.

Jeff and Keith are awesome! Jeff called us the night before to make sure the directions we had were good and then gave us better directions. He told us to call him in the morning if we had trouble finding the dock, which we did, and he navigated us to the correct spot.
I have never been on the ocean before and was a little nervous but Jeff and Keith were detailed in their instruction, always there to help, and they were also fun and really easy to talk to. I would go back to Kauai JUST to go fishing with them again! It was my favorite activity during our two week stay.
My husband also enjoyed himself and we each caught two Tuna. We may have caught more but the dolphins showed up to compete with us. Even though the dolphins «ruined» further catching, it was fun to see them doing flips around the boat.

The night before, Jeff contacted ME. A repair on his craft took longer than daylight available. Things happen & BreakAway considers SAFETY FIRST!!! They have their priorities straight!
I was delighted with his call & sense of responsibility! HE TOOK THE INITIATIVE TO LET THE CUSTOMERS KNOW BEFORE SHOWING UP AT 6 am! This goes a long way in my book! Being a military man, communication & responsibility are tops!
Went out today! Great catch! JEFF PUT US ON THE SPOT! Don’t let me second rate, deck hand, Keith! Keith piloted half the time while catching. Both worked well together attending all our safety, lines & reels. SAFETY WAS ALWAYS ON TOP!
A great catch for all on board! Plenty to take home. Made my own poke & tuna steaks.
I would go out with this crew anytime!
BE AWARE! These fishing tours FILL UP at least a 2 weeks before they leave the dock. I am here 2 weeks & had I not called early, I would not have been allowed due to space availability. Fortunately, I had some leeway with the unexpected maintenance postponement.
Next time, I will call AT LEAST 2 WEEKS before I arrive!
BOTTOM LINE: THESE MEN CATCH FISH! YOU WILL TOO.

Local guys who fish everyday. They have a 32 foot boat, very sea worthy, and good rods and tackle. Some sodas, waters and a couple of beers are provided. They basically do it all, put the lines in the water, gaff the fish, etc. All you have to do is climb into the fighting chair and reel it in.
Two of us went and there were four other people on the charter. Plenty of room for all (6 customers, the captain and the first mate). Went on a morning charter (6 am) and fished from the moment we cleared the harbor until we got back. Caught two 25 lb Ono’s. Since I was going to be on the island for another 10 days I ended up with a half of fish! Nothing better than fresh fish…
I would use these guys again.

I have been on boats in around Kauai several times and the waves have always been fairly normal. I booked a fishing charter with Breakaway Charters for my 6 year old son and me during July 2012. My son and I along with 4 others boarded the boat and started heading out to sea through the harbor. When we came to about a quarter mile of the seawall, the captain told all of us to get under the cabin. We went the past the seawall and the ocean was rocking and rolling. It looked like the movie «The Perfect Storm». Within 15 minutes, 3 of the passengers were seasick, including my son, who wanted to go home. I am no sailor, but I looked at the waves and they looked like 14 foot swells. I asked the captain how big the swells were and he said 4 feet. I didn’t reply, but after 15 minutes the guy behind whispered, «those look bigger than 4 feet». The captain was awesome though, he directed the boat through those giant waves until we got to the fishing spot and dropped anchor. I have never been seasick in my life, but the up and down action of the stationary boat almost got me. We all rotated on one rod catching fish, except my son who couldn’t lift his head. We caught a skipjack tuna, cut it up, put it on the hook, and then used some for chum, and we all took turns catching yellowfin tuna. Heading back, the captain sort of surfed the waves back to harbor. In the harbor, the captain cleaned some tuna and let everyone take some home. I talked to the captain afterwards and he said the ocean had been choppy all year. Next time, I will try to get an idea of the wave conditions before bringing a young child on a fishing charter.

Nice guys. Could be a little more helpful out of the blocks for novices. Fair prices. Offered as much fish as we wanted. Caught our limit. Id book again.

I am definitely booking my next trip with Jeff again. He really went out of his way to make sure we were all happy and caught fish. The reels he uses are a treat since they are Shimano Tiagras. Great equipment. Book with Jeff and you will no be sorry.

Was visiting the island with my wife and decided to try a little deep sea fishing, for the first time. Jeff helped make this experience a memorable one!
There were 6 of us «fishing», with Jeff acting as both the captain and crew. He got us out to sea, got all of the gear rigged up without losing anyone and we managed to find a couple of Yellowfin Tuna along the way.
Both my wife and I enjoyed our time on the boat, even if the ocean was a little rocky.
The cost was minimal and the day was beautiful, so it all worked out for the best.
When we do go back to the island, we will look Jeff up again, as we will need another poke fix!

Caught our limit. Handled sea sick passengers well. Learned technique. Kind crew. They will prepare and let you keep your catch. (unlike other companies, we’re told)
