My coworker and I walked into this place and everyone stared at us as if we were exotic zoo animals. Guess they had never seen Hispanic people before. We decided to stay and check out the food. It wasn’t all that. Boring bbq with not much flavor. The cole slaw was old-looking and did not taste fresh.

So it’s Friday night, we tried this place in lieu of driving to Fat Matt’s What a mistake! It took several minutes to decide what to get, as the menu board was a bit confusing. I ordered a rib plate, my girlfriend ordered the Texas burger, and my son ordered grilled cheese and french fries. There were more people behind the counter than in the restaurant I saw three cooks on the line, 2 gentleman upfront one was Fred himself. The staff was friendly. When the tray came out it was enough food for maybe 1 hungry fellow. I felt like I was in high school and the food was being rationed. The rib plate had four bones and they were bland, seemed to be baked in an oven and then thrown on a grill to to get some smoke. The meat was tough and chewy. The lady behind the counter had assured me that it was fall of the bone tender. The Brunswick stew was okay and the cole slaw was tasteless. My girlfriend’s burger was bland and she did not finish it. We should have got a clue when there was literally one person in the restaurant when we got there at 9 o’clock. I’m not sure what the other reviewers on Unilocal are seeing in this place, but it deserves two stars and no more. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because the people were genuinely friendly and the service was quick. They should seriously consider hiring someone that knows how to cook barbecue.

TLDR: Great food for an even better price! Went to this place with some friends when we were randomly looking on Unilocal for a place to eat. Got the pulled pork sandwich. It was probably one of the best i’ve had so far. Also, it is georgia tech themed. Next time I’m getting the yellow jacket hotdog.

I like the bbq, but I love the yellow jacket hotdogs and Brunswick stew. Don’t forget to get a refill on their sweet tea!

Short review: this was basic BBQ and the service is just fine and attentive. As we were just visiting the Atlanta area, I suppose we were expecting a bit more from Southern BBQ. Pulled pork on a hamburger bun was a tad underwhelming. But it is a good place for a quick on-the-go dinner.

When a person thinks of southern BBQ this is the place they picture in their heads. The building, the atmosphere, and the food are exactly what a person wants when craving southern BBQ. The simplicity of the menu makes this a perfect lunch stop.

Love the food, service and atmosphere. The only thing I didn’t like was the off brand ketchup. They need to get some Heinz

This is a good, local BBQ joint. They participate in many fundraising events for the community, and you’re always greeted with a smile from the staff. The food comes out quick, and their Brunswick stew is great!

I have been going to Freds for a number of years. it is one of the few places where you can get the same quality product every single time. From their yellow jacket hotdogs, to the great BBQ, Fred’s is an institution. If you want to know what quality BBQ taste like, go to Freds.

Friendly staff and expansive menu. Yellow jacket with cheese all the way minus ketchup was awesome. My kids went back for more. Bbq chicken and beef were fantastic! Definitely make the short trip North of I-20 for this food. :-)

Delicious. Over the years I’ve been going here the prices have rose up some. Now, that being said, I still love this place. I enjoy the hotdogs and the BBQ sandwiches. I’ll be honest and say I haven’t ventured far from that. I love them and always get it. The Brunswick stew is very good! My brother has had the fried corn. It is also good. Sometimes my parents get the grilled cheese. We haven’t had anything bad here yet. It is one of my favorite BBQ places around.

Friday before dinner. Place was almost empty. Wow a Coke Freestyle machine! Pretty high tech for out here. Basic BBQ menu. Never would have guessed that Texas was a bigger sandwich. The Q is good but the staff is bossy… order at the counter then wait till they call your number. Well ok if my wife can’t have both tots and hush puppies, just tell her that costs extra but be nice about it! The Brunswick stew was nice but the foam bowl thing is a little 1980 ish don’t you think? So why can’t I have my cup right after I order and pay? Why can’t I get my Freestyle on until after my food is ready? Dude! Yeah I know the menu is on the board but maybe I haven’t been here before and if your counter staff wasn’t so bitchy they could have helped me out with some frigging suggestions. Good thing your Q was good. That’s the only reason I’d sit on your tacky ass picnic benches and eat here. Oh yeah I like Tater tots too. Maybe I’ll try one of your weird hot dogs next time.

Ughh… thought trying a new bbq place was a good idea… nope. No one greeted us as we walked in and as first time customers we weren’t sure if we were to order at counter or wait to be seated or what. We figured it out when an employee finally said«is anyone ready to order? «. Our food came fast. The pork sandwiches were good but not great. There was only one type of bbq sauce and some hot sauce. The slaw was very under seasoned, and the few fries we got were droopy and sad. One of my pet peeves is for an employee to clean around where I am eating. During our entire meal the small dining room was swept, large trash containers removed etc. It wasn’t close to closing time either. We also got the feeling that family friendly meant if you are family, we’ll be friendly.

The only reason we stopped was because Wallace BBQ was closed. We both had the pork sandwich basket.(Sandwich, fries and slaw) and my husband added an order of Brunswick stew to his. The sandwich was so-so, the sauce was pretty good but it’s nothing to write home about. The slaw was not great and the fries were about the same. My husband hated the Brunswick stew, I thought it was ok, but it’s nothing great either. They had hotdogs that they are apparently known for so if you go you might want to stick with that.

I love Fred’s BBQ House. It’s got such a homey, comfortable feel, and the folks who run it are always friendly and welcoming. It’s also close to the house and offers takeout, so it’s always a convenient way to get our BBQ fix. Fred’s ascribes to the vinegar school of sauce-making, which I happen to like. There aren’t any other sauce options, though, if your taste doesn’t run that direction. They are the home of the Yellow Jacket Dog, which my niece loves. They also have pulled pork, beef, and mixed plates of bbq, and you can get it separate or as a sandwich. Though I haven’t had them myself yet, I am told the onion rings are divine. The reason that I keep going back, though, is that Brunswick stew. It is meaty, piping hot, and full of flavor. I definitely recommend upgrading the size to the 8 oz. cup if you’re a fan of stew, too. I could eat it every single day of my life. The restaurant is very low-key, and most of its patrons seem to be of the«regular» variety; for me, that’s a draw, so take it for what it’s worth. All in all, Fred’s is a family-friendly, enjoyable place to grab a bite to eat when you’re in the mood for BBQ.

Stopped by today for the first time in a long time. I find Fred’s to be your average BBQ House with far-above average hospitality and customer care. I had the two meat plate — pork & beef — and was served a large enough portion that I had to grab a box and bring some on home. The smokiness was just right and the meat was tender. My preference would be toward the pork. My Brunswick Stew was very nice with good flavor and a mix of meat. The slaw was chilled and smooth. I snitched a fry from my wife, and though still quite warm, they’d been out just a minute or two too long. But when I took them back, they revisited the fryer to finish them off, and were handed back to me perfectly piping hot. Nicely done. All the staff is fully focused on your eating pleasure, which makes Fred’s a very enjoyable experience.
