Haven’t been to this place recently until today. This used to be our go to sushi take out before. It was a one man operation few years back when the original Japanese owner was here. He made the best California rolls and spicy tuna rolls! This place was sold about 2 years ago and it seems that the taste and quality of the food went downhill. I got the crunchy shrimp roll and the California roll. The shrimp roll was tasteless and it was rolled carelessly. The California roll was OK but not as tasty as before. I think I will need to look for another place soon!

Horrible customer service. The owner and the workers have no clue how to treat their customers. They actually deny you service. What kind of food place denies you service. I will never come here ever again and never recommend it. Go somewhere else’s!!!

Owner is very rude. I ordered a pick up order and wasn’t asked what time I can pick up, she just hung up on me when I placed the order. I came in on my lunch and she refused to give me my food. Which I ordered California roll and spam, Her response was, she had to throw it away because I didn’t come in on time. I asked if I could order something else and she refused to take a new order. Never will I go here again! (Her time) very unprofessionally, this was my second attempt on this place. I won’t recommend this place to my coworkers or friends. Worst customer service. The go go juice café is highly recommended :).

Walked in. It smelled gross. A mix between some kind of cleaning agent and stale, funky air. Walked up to the counter and a friendly gentlemen walked out from the kitchen to greet us. We looked at the menu for about 2 minutes. You know that feeling you get when it just doesn’t seem right? Well, it didn’t go away. We looked at each other and walked out. We would not have been able to eat in there with that horrible smell anyway.

Tiny selection, rice mushy and the most clueless lady behind the counter. Lots of competition in the area. Won’t be returning. Avoid.

Restaurant smells like toxic some kind bleach smell, I ask Joseph please open a door and he said no. The food has went down hill they make teriyaki and it’s not the same as the previous owner. And this teriyaki it cost one dollar for less and the taste is like I should have not stop here at all

Looks like there are new owners, sadly this will be my last visit. Sushi cal has been my go to for years. California rolls are very inconsistent in size, sloppily rolled and a huge amount of mayonnaise crab filling. Usually more bang for your buck is good but sushi needs balance. Spicy tuna rolls are worse, it was a huge dollop of tuna flavored baby food in a sloppy roll. Rest in peace sushi cal

Update warning to customers: BAD horrendous service! The new owners are not trained very well in hospitality and friendly customer service. Especially the Korean lady that appears to be the wife of the manager. She welcomes customers without a smile, warmth or gratitude and is as cold blooded in her responses as the sushi prepared. The only reason they deserve even a star is because the previous Japanese owner did such an excellent job formulating the sushi recipes and menu. He built this empire of delicious quality sushi rolls, consistently favorable service, and great bang for the buck! It’s no wonder there are so many loyal customers… But i noticed after new ownership, the prices inflated, mistakes ensued(e.g. no tempura roll sauce, no wasabi) and the sushi quality is less than the pristine perfection it was before. Ownership needs to understand that their bad bitter attitude can leave a bitter taste in our mouths and Unilocal reviews!

Great service. Sushi was excellent. Great location right off off of PCH. Made fresh to order and the portions were right on.

I can’t believe this place is still around! They have a very short and small menu, mostly for to go orders for businesses or for catering! It’s never really packed with customers but they are fairly really busy(getting their Togo and catering orders ready) I recall from back in the days that they stay open until all their rice is sold out! They have four kinds of rolls — shrimp tempura rolls — spicy tuna rolls — California rolls — vegetable rolls Other things they sell are udon, teriyaki bowls, spicy tuna bowls, hand rolls GREATGREATPRICES!!! $ 4.99 for shrimp tempura rolls 8pcs $ 2.99 for shrimp tempura rolls 4pcs! Order for two =$ 14 Half and half shrimp tempura rolls and spicy tuna rolls(total 8pcs) One shrimp udon Spicy tuna bowl One bottle of water I don’t know where else I can get this simple great quality food with that price!!!

Not an extensive menu. But, I really like the things they offer & it’s very reasonable. Personal favorites: Spicy Tuna Roll and Tempura Roll!

–hole in the wall– The food choices are simple and cheap! I enjoy the taste for all the food. I tend to order their shrimp udon, its delicious ! Service– :/you get your food in about 15 mins so I don’t mind waiting because you know your food is being made fresh. Environment: simple hole in the wall type of place … Not a date night environment :)

3 and half stars: This sushi place is one of those hole in the wall sushi places. It doesn’t look very amazing from the outside nor inside. It’s very old & needs remodeling big time! Surprisingly, the sushi is not bad at all. The fish is fresh & tastes good. The person who took my order over the phone today was a very nice lady. I’m assuming she is the owner. I asked to not put any rice & put avocado in my order & she listened. I also got miso soup. When I went to pick up 15 min later, my order was ready & packed. The spicy tuna hand roll was tasty & the miso soup was perfect & hit the spot. I wouldn’t go sit in this Restuarant to eat but I would definitely order in advance & pick up. The sushi is very inexpensive & good quality. And they are great with the timing.

Was out and about when we were looking for a sushi place in the area. Found this place on Unilocal and have to say I am impressed with the food as well as the price! We met Patty and her husband, they were personable and made a friendly atmosphere for us to be in. I know we will be back!

With the wife having our second kid over at Kaiser Hospital, I wanted to run out and get her some post-op sushi. I jumped on Unilocal and found this place right around the corner so I dropped in. I must admit, this place doesn’t look inviting from the outside nor does it look fancy once inside. It is Korean owned, as are most sushi places in LA and decorated as such. I assume it was owned and operated by the sweet old man and women who were working there. They were very nice and inviting. When I got to the hospital and gave my wife her rolls and sushi, the smile on her face made me so happy. I tried a few bites and realized that this place was legit! The food was fantastic and tasted quit fresh!!! I was very happy with Sushi Cal and would definitely go back!

Came here for lunch and this place even from the outside doesn’t look that appealing nor in the inside but the sushi rolls that they do produce are pretty legit. For a really inexpensive meal you can seriously get full off of one order of the spicy tuna rolls. I surely did and couldn’t even finish my rolls. You order in front and you can also add miso soup or any other menu items if you are starving. But for me I just got one order of the spicy tuna roll. The flavor is pretty good and I have to say they are good on timing. They will tell you how long it will take for them to give you the food when you finish ordering which is pretty nice especially if you are in a rush to go back to work or something. So for a quick bite during lunch this is a nice option to have and try out.

Not much needs to be said about Sushi Cal. New ownership, same ol’ rolls… Spicy Tuna Rolls, California Rolls, Crunchy Shrimp Tempura Rolls & Spicy Tuna Bowls :-D The recipes remain the same. Service is waaay faster, no longer a one man show. Hopefully new owners put in a little bit of TLC and re-model dining area… old tables and rickety chairs«need to go… sacurrity!» –Bön Qui Qui Don’t expect anything fancy. This isn’t a «real» sushi restaurant; it should be categorized one step above pre-packaged sushi. With that being said… Why do I keep coming here? It’s like crack; cheap and it’s a quick fix to any sushi craving and its delicious.

Their spicy tuna bowls are the bom. That’s the only thing I’ve eaten there. 3 stars you ask? Well, the ambience is lacking and it was kind of dirty. And it was very warm inside the restaurant and they dint seem to care about turning the ac on. The drink selection is substandard, with only semi come canned drinks. Forget about beer or saki.
