We loved this place!!! The burgers were delicious and the bar offered some interesting choices. I am very disappointed to learn of their closing… *pout* Addendum: A new restaurant called ROFL Café has recently opened in the same location and, happily, they have almost the identical kitchen staff as 8 Oz. Burger Bar. If you were a fan of 8 Oz., you will love the beefy creations at ROFL. Check them out and get ready for deliciousness! :)

This update has been sitting in my drafts because after I tried the Melrose burger on my last trip, I decided I’d be back again and again. Apparently, it will not be so — I just read that the temporary 8 Oz. shutter may be more than temporary. Somebody, please contradict this report. Because I need that Melrose burger again. I loved the 8 Oz. but the Melrose burger, with its crisp arugula, juicy garlic roasted tomato, and sweet bite of red onion marmalade, just about blew me away. The six ounce patty was meaty and satisfying, and I didn’t miss the other two ounces. I added some gruyère, and it melted right into the burger. As we sat before seven, I also made it a combo, with a drink and fries for $ 12. I had Matt B. order the truffled potato skins and we traded, and I had a pretty perfect meal. These potato skins were fantastically crispy with a nice amount of potato fluff and a generous seasoning of salt, pepper, and musty truffle. I’ve seen burger joints get fancy with potatoes and fry alternatives before, but these were abnormally delicious. I hope 8 Oz. reopens, because both of my meals were wonderful. It saddens me that my first Melrose burger could also be my last, and I must at least know the recipe for those potato skins. I know there are a lot of good burger joints in L.A., but 8 Oz. was one of the best, and if it really is gone, it will be missed.

I went last week for some delightful short rib grilled cheese with friends, and I was beyond heartbroken to see that they will be closed for a month doing renovations. So beware!

8oz is off Melrose kind of by all the small boutiques. It appears small on the outside, but once you walk in, its a lot bigger. Interior is dark, and simple but it is a burger/bar so it fits. Food: The 8oz(house blend, iceberg, pickle, tomato, white onion, 8oz special sauce): thick patty and juicy, bf really liked this. It looked like too much for me. Melrose(6oz house blend, arugula, garlic roasted tomatos, red onion marmalade): Loved this! I love arugula on my burgers and the red onion marmalade was so good. We also ordered 5 sauces for $ 3 to try with our fries and burgers. We tried spicy mayo, 8oz hot sauce, roasted garlic aioli, green peppercorn aioli and purple mustard. The hot sauce, garlic aioli and spicy mayo were good, green peppercorn was okay, purple mustard… kind of funky. Garlic Potato Wedges: It was a special for that day so we tried it. It was okay, lots of garlic but not even amounts, the wedges were really thick pieces. You can also build your own burger but they charge an extra $ 1 for cheese, and $ 2/topping or 3/$ 5. We got there to late to order the combos, but they serve the 8oz and Melrose with a side and drink/draft for $ 12/$ 15! A much better deal than us paying individually for everything, so if you get there before 7pm, you should probably try this!

Besides the bun being stale/dry/dusty, and the truffled«potato skins» being extremely bland, there was some kind of vomit in my soda. No kidding. About half way through drinking my Coke, I noticed some white, gunky crap with(what appeared to be) pepper,(or poppy seeds?) all over the INSIDE of my glass, and floating in my drink. …What? I was only, maybe close to ½ finished with my burger too. which was sad. Because after the vomit-soda, there was no way I was putting another bite from this place in my mouth. The ONLY reason this place is even getting a 1(and a bother at reviewing it at all) is because of our waitress. She was really nice, and handled the situation lovely. I wouldn’t recommend going here at all. If they cant even keep their glasses clean, who knows what other health issues are lurking in their kitchen.

70% Solid, if hit & miss burger joint. I’ve visited 8oz a few times over the years. I’ve tried their Estancia Burger, 8oz Burger, Fried Fish Burger, Chicken Pot Pie Croquettes, and their Apple Pie Milk Shakes. The main reason I come back is for their ‘Estancia’ grass-fed beef burger. Grass-fed beef just does it for me flavor wise, it has a more gamy hint to it. The meat quality here, I find preferable to their regular patties. Throw in some escarole and roasted mushrooms, and it’s pretty solid and distinct burger, regardless of how much you like it. I also love the fact that the burger is cooked perfectly rare every time I request. This is the main reason why I return a few times a year. Their other burgers aren’t bad, they just don’t stand out in city that’s so competitive with the dish. The regular patties suggest a blend of tri-tip, short-rib, and other stuff, but honestly I fail to notice any difference because of it. It’s a decent burger, just nothing outstanding. The patty is a bit thin and certainly does NOT look like what 8oz advertises in their website. I’d suggest opting for the Estancia instead. Their fried fish burger(canola oil is used here) isn’t bad. The fish is enjoyable enough and not too overcooked. Maybe a tad bit too much too much batter. It won’t blow you away, but I don’t think it’s going to bother you either. I just think of it as a more upscale version of McD’s Fillet O Fish. The Chicken Pot Pie croquettes sound interesting in theme, but are quite a disappointing dish. It’s fairly bland, heavy, a bit greasy, and just not memorable. I suggest avoiding this. Apple Pie Shakes aren’t bad at all. They do a great job of re-interpreting a classic dish here. Basically all the flavors of an apple pie are there, the cinnamon, apple, clove etc. They even throw some cinnamon crumbs on top to give the shake some complexity to texture, lol. I’m really impressed by this. Beer list is decent, as they have maybe 6 – 10 respectable brews on draft, with more of a selection bottled. Pricing is reasonable. You figure the average burger is $ 8-$ 12-ish, but the burgers are typically 6−8oz. It compares to be around the same as most burger joints. You can get better deals with the happy hour menu. Ambiance here is pretty generic gastro-pub, nothing to write home about. I noticed they play a lot of teeny-bopper music(katy perry, lady gaga, etc), that I didn’t particularly care for, but my dining companion found irresistible. Service is about average. I always get my burger within 15 mins of ordering. I’d like to return to check out more dishes, but I’m happy just to get their Estancia burger.

Been here a few times and have to say, it’s pretty good! This last time, we used my Living Social deal and that made it that much sweeter. :) Review in bullet points for easy digestion :) –Our waiter was awesome, super nice –Got our burgers wrapped in lettuce(cause we crazy like that!) and it was pretty delicious and crisp –Melrose burger… good. pretty good… nothing to rave about. –We also shared the«new years resolution» burger(i think that’s what it’s called) special they have right now and OMGSOGOOD. IFYOUARETHEREANDTHESPECIALISSTILLON, TRYIT! we both loveeeed this one –grilled artichoke appetize — standard. tasty goodness. Overall, I’m a fan. Tasty burgers and great atmosphere.

Their burgers are delicious – cooked medium rare(unless specified differently). I just get the regular… I wasn’t a big fan of their burger with the arugula… The fries are okay… nothing special and last time I went here, half of my fries were burnt and too hard to eat. They have a bar with this place, so that’s pretty convenient. The is contemporary with a modern, Western theme… I would come back to this place but I wouldn’t crave for it.

Ok, it’s been a year and I had the same burger — THE8OZ. This time, I loved it! It was so flavorful and juicy! The GRILLEDMARINATEDARTICHOKES were still kick-ass too. I also added a bowl of their soup of the month, a YELLOWSPLITPEA with house cured bacon and sweet peas. Really good and hearty! I came on a Friday night and the place was packed, with people waiting outside. I made the mistake of assuming it would be as empty as it was the last time I came. I put my name in and was expecting a long wait, but fortunately the hostess told me that I could snag a seat at the bar, first-come, first-serve. I hovered and 10 minutes later that’s exactly what I did! Even on a Friday night, I found residential parking nearby…

After a long, cold and rainy day, Steven L and I had more energy to get a burger than to imagine having to cook. So, we used a Living Social deal that I had gotten — $ 10 for a $ 20 credit at 8 Oz Burger Bar! Before we ordered, I asked our server if they had any fried cheese curds, as the last time I was here they were not in season yet. My heart broke when she told us that this dish is now OFFTHEMENU:(because they kept selling out! I don’t really understand that logic, and regardless of the reason, my heart was broken anyway. After I picked my heart up off the floor, we ordered and the food came out fast! Everything was as great as the first time I was here: Split: Short rib grilled cheese($ 8) — perfectly panini-pressed grilled thin-sliced sourdough bread with a generous amount of tender short ribs, onion marmalade, and melty cheese. I still think this sammich is better than both the ones on the Grilled Cheese Truck, and at Lemonade! Me: Melrose burger($ 8) — the oven roasted tomatoes make this burger — and I loved it this time as much as the last time! They cooked it perfectly medium rare, I didn’t add cheese, and I added the 8 Oz Special Sauce and thinly sliced onions and pickles(standard, no $ extra condiments) to the onion marmalade and arugula that came on it — and it was DELICIOUS! The last time I added egg and bacon, but honestly it doesn’t even need it. Steven: Estancia Grass Fed Burger, add Gruyère($ 9+$ 1) — this big burger had a huge pile of sauteed mushrooms on it, and was juicy and messy and yummy! Truffled potato skins($ 4) — I think I expected them all to be crispier — some of them were, or parts of them were, when other parts were soft because they had more potato on the skin. These were yummy dipped in the 8 Oz Special Sauce, and with the salty cheese/herb/truffle oil mixture on top. Note to self: next time, ask for these extra crispy! Chorizo Mac & Cheese($ 4) — I’m not a big chorizo fan, so the bold taste of chorizo in this cheesy mac didn’t impress me. I’d pass on it next time. Sodas($ 3 ea) Since our hot truck tipster Ciara G had told us that the Lake Street Creamery truck was around the corner, we passed on the not-so-interesting looking few dessert choices on the menu. I remember the last time we were here, we planned a Sweet Lady Jane stop! I’ll definitely be back here for another Melrose Burger, and insist on asking about the fried cheese curds every time… just in case: P

I’ve been going to 8 Oz for about two years now, and every time I go the burgers are just as juicy and amazing. The actual 8oz burger is a honker, so I usually stick to the Melrose burger(6oz). Yum yum yum! Most of the time I order the burger with the fried mozzarella cheese. Amazing. It’s pretty much like having one huge square shaped cheese stick on your burger. The service is pretty good most of the time. But if you go here during happy hour don’t expect to have your water glass filled very often.

Groupon/LivingSocial is a great way to expose you to restaurants that you might not know about yet or perhaps open your eyes to the places you always walk by but are never convinced enough to walk in. We decided to try 8 Oz Burger Bar because of this. We had their special burger for that night which I believe the name was Seoul something or along those lines. Yes, it was a kimchi style burger. A little bit different but it wasn’t nasty. It wasn’t a winner though. The champion was the grass fed burger. This baby dissolves in your mouth like cake. I’m no burger connoisseur but this was a tasty treat! Checkaracho! — translation — «Check it out yo!»(Japanese fobber) If you order the truffled potato skin which was just«aiight,», ask for ketchup and garlic aioli dip. Dip the potato into both sauces(I know you’re shaking your head Gooch) and it will be the savior of the dish. Our waitreess was pretty cool, laid back, and attentive. Their mixed drinks were pretty stiff. The entire tab would’ve been pricey but it is what it is when you’re at a trendy burger spot on Melrose.

Had a Groupon for $ 20 worth of food at 8 Oz. Burger Bar. Glad we didn’t spend full price on this place because it would not have been worth it. GB and I had a late lunch on a Sunday, and the place was full, but not packed. Just park in the neighborhood and be aware of the signs to avoid having to pay for street parking. For what you’ll be spending on food at this place, you’ll need every quarter you can save. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, who took us to a table where you couldn’t see either of the two plasmas(first day of football season), so I asked to be reseated and she happily obliged. Our waiter came by and asked for our order, but we had to have him come back a few minutes later. We decided upon the Melrose for me, 6 oz house blend of meat(whatever that means), arugula, garlic roasted tomatoes and red onion marmalade. I asked for the latter on the side, because I’m a burger purist, but did want to try it. I made it into a combo(available before 7 pm) with fries and a soda for $ 12 total. GB got the lamburger, which was like $ 11. Since we only had an order of fries between us, we ordered a side of onion rings too. The rings were a big FAIL. They were super greasy and for $ 4, you’d think they’d be decent, but these were like Denny’s quality, or maybe even worse. Eck. The burgers were good, but 6 oz. of meat is nothing. It was the neatest burger I’ve ever seen though, with all the arugula and tomatoes neatly tucked under the perfectly formed bun. The bun was nothing to write home about. It was like a school cafeteria burger bun. I cut it in half, swapped for half of GB’s burger, and wolfed both down in 2 minutes. And was still hungry. I liked my burger better, but the lamb was pretty good. It came with some spicy sauce which I didn’t try. The fries were just fries, but was a good filler. Service could’ve used some improvement though. We had to ask for my Coke to be brought in the first place, he never brought me a lemon, which we had asked for, even after he told me they were cutting them at the bar. The manager was standing right in front of our table next to the bar, and my drink cup was empty two times and two times she never noticed it. In fact, I never got any refills unless I asked for them and even then, they never filled it all the way to the top. Who needs room for cream with their Coke? Fill ‘er up, especially if you’re not coming back to refill my drink! Anyway, we’ll probably go back just to use our other Groupon, but now I know to just stick to the burger and forgo the sides. Maybe I’ll try the truffled potato skins from all the reviews here, but I know I’m not getting fries or especially the onion rings. It’s a casual place, and they’re pretty big, taking up two spaces, with a bar, some booths and some moveable tables to accommodate different-sized groups. Good thing there was a game on to distract us from the bad service. And good thing we didn’t pay full price.

My friend has been transitioning his diet and grass fed meat is on the agenda. So when i found a grass fed burger on the menu AND a deal on Livingsocial, i knew the perfect place to take him! Checking up on my Unilocal buddies reviews, i took up their recommendations to get the short rib grilled cheese sandwich and the truffled potato skins! All Great recs as we enjoyed them. I had hoped the sandwich would have that extra umph, not sure what was missing– but i was craving something a bit more. The Estanchia grass fed burger was pretty tasty tho– my fave thing we ordered. It was a little bit too smoky for my taste,(tasted like liquid smoke-?) but the meat was cooked perfectly med rare, juicy and the bun was yummy as well. I would like to come back to try other signature burgers and maybe make my own burger with fried egg and bacon of course. Super cool waiters!

Definitely one of the better burgers I’ve had in Los Angeles. The beef was flavorful and tasty, the arugula and red onion marmalade definitely added something. I was surprised, however, that the bun was really your basic enriched white-flour like the cheap ones at the grocery store. Expected more from that. The truffled potato skins were heaven. Glad I read Unilocal and learned about those. The french fries(white not sweet potato) were okay, nothing special. I think if I ordered right, this could’ve been a five-star place. Better hamburger buns would go a long way though. Happy hour seems like a good deal, I want to go check that out for sure. I’ll be back.

WARNING: Do not order the Truffled Potato Skins unless you are prepared to have cravings for them 7 days a week. If you are against drugs, this is not the place for you because I am convinced that there’s crack in the food. It’s just too good to be true. Ok, so far I’ve been here 3 times and I think I’ve started liking it more and more with each visit. The first time I came, I ordered the veggie burger with extra special sauce and extra lettuce, and our waiter messed up and brought me the turkey burger with extra special sauce and extra lettuce instead. At first I was kind of pissed because I never like turkey burgers. But I was starving and didn’t feel like waiting for them to make me another burger, so I just sucked it up and dealt with it.(best decision ever.) First bite, I thought I was dreaming. The description of the turkey burger says«mustard greens, bacon, and horseradish dijonaise». Umm, that qualifies as gross in my book(minus the bacon part). But when I put it in my mouth it was a WHOLE different story. Oh man. Definitely one of the juiciest burgers I’ve ever had in my life. And a combo of the the horseradish dijonaise and the special sauce is what pushed me over the edge. I HATE horseradish and dijon mustard, but .god. Mixed with the special sauce, that shit was amazing. Haven’t ordered anything else since, and I don’t plan on it.(although the Suds & Slider sampler is tempting… but no). But in all seriousness, If you come to 8oz and don’t order the Truffled Potato Skins, you should be arrested, and possibly shot. SO ridiculously addicting and delicious. And only $ 4?! Down. Everything on the menu is really reasonably priced, they have some legitimate beers, and the staff is chill. 8oz is definitely my new go-to spot after I’m done with a busy day of shopping on Melrose. Plus, I’m still determined to see Govind and touch his hair. I’m a creep… :update: 8÷6÷10 — Mission accomplished. Waddupppppp. :]

Had a craving for a good burger and I didn’t need too much of an impetus to drive out to Melrose for lunch today… I was thinking that this was a good time to try one of the places that all you Unilocalers have been talking about so that I can add this to my list of places to go for one of my favorite foods. Pulled up within a block of the joint, fed the meter on the street, and proceeded to enter a place that was located among some of the trendiest underground fashion boutiques in LA. Greeted as I entered by the friendly manager/owner who bid me to sit anywhere I wanted. I chose an inconspicuous spot near the bar towards that back but the whole place seemed open and spacious… they have a couple of tables on the sidewalk but those were quickly taken as the sun had already burned through the morning clouds and it was beginning to shape up as a nice day weather-wise. I could have chosen one of their burgers already specified on the menu but I wanted to build my own, with my favorite ingredients, so that I have a better basis for comparison to some of my other favorite places. I had: basic 8 oz burger — perfectly cooked medium-rare and juicy, didn’t crumble even along the edges; crumbled bleu cheese — sharp enough for a taste that didn’t overpower the meat; baby arugula spinach — nice bitter but fresh bite to it; smoked bacon — not smokey or crisp enough… barely perceptible… lost among all the other flavors; avocado slices — slightly overripe like guacamole… prefer it less ripe with edges; The bun was tall and didn’t mush or fall apart, golden very, very slight cake like consistency, I’m guessing that maybe it was brioche? Everyone raves about the truffled potato skins and they are bomb… dusted with slightly dried parsley and a textured salt, deep fried crispy on the outside. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. All in all the prices are similar to any upscale sit-in burger place. My burger was a little on the pricey side mostly because I built it the way I wanted. I want to bring my friends and family back sometime to share my experience.

As good a place as any for my 100th review. 8 Oz Burger Bar lives up to its namesake. It has great burgers and equally great drinks. GF, Ciara and I went here a while back. Our server Jared was very attentive and helpful. The ambiance was loud but kinda cool and high energy. Faves included the grilled cheese shortrib sammich, which they were kind enough to cut into thirds for us, and the Melrose Burger, with an onion marmalade and oven roasted tomatoes. GF added a fried egg and house cured bacon to this which in my opinion put it over the top. There’s really nothing bad to say. This place is totally solid. The only possible negative I can think of was parking. We had to drive around for a while before we found a spot. But don’t let that stop you. It’s totally worth any parking hassles you might encounter. Short Rib Mac & Cheese($ 8) — 5 Stars Melrose Burger + Fried Egg & House Bacon($ 12 total) — 5 Stars Lamb Burger($ 11) — 4 Stars Create-Your-Own Burger + Fried Green Tomatoes & Bacon($ 15 total) — 4 Stars The Basil 8($ 9) — 5 Stars Ambiance — 4 Stars Service — 5 Stars Parking — 2 Stars(street parking only, which was a bit of an issue) Value — 3 Stars(great food but $ 63 is pricey for 3 burgers and drinks) Total($ 63 incl $ 3 Iced Tea + tax) = 37 Stars = 37⁄9 = avg 4.11 Stars Rounded down to 4 Stars

Earlier in the day, the bf and I had eaten a Whopper and a QP w/cheese respectively, knowing that we were going to have dinner here at night. My point? You can never eat too many burgers. And so we still opted to come here. During our 30 minute wait, we ordered drinks from the bar, then stood toward the front of the restaurant to take in the awful acoustics. It’s a good thing we can both lip read. The place was super busy, but I believe we got the best service one could expect. The bf ordered the 8 oz and I got the Melrose w/bacon, of course, and gruyère. We split an order of fries and I also asked for a side salad with ranch. To wash down dinner, I ordered a tasty white ale whose name escapes me and which is also not on the on-line menu. So I can’t tell you the name of the amazing non-amber beer I had. We loved the fries. The bf compared his burger as not being up to the Costco frozen patty standard, finding the house blend of the patty meats unnecessarily complex. I, on the other hand, rather enjoyed my bacon-laden goodness. See, this was our first time here… when in doubt, add bacon, especially a thick, juicy slice! I think burger-wise, The Counter does a little bit better with it’s menu, although 8oz does have the lamb & raita burger, a + in my book. But I think that for a burger joint slash bar, 8 oz does better for lively ambiance to hang, rather than to just eat it and beat it.
