If you want super sexy, super healthy hair this is your man! Derek is a true artist. His bungalow is a cozy retreat with complete privacy. I always leave feeling so beautiful and yet I am always able to do my own hair on my own because he creates such doable styles. I’ve had every haircut under the sun and have worked with top stylists and colorists in Los Angeles and he is still my number one. Color, cut, style. He is the master!

I’m adding to my review: Derek I guess didn’t realize that when he marks something on a Unilocal review, it informs the person who wrote the review. He actually marked«funny» on my review which says a whole lot about his character. He cuts my hair off because 1. He was high or 2. drunk and doesn’t do the right thing by offering to fix it and then he has the balls to mark my review as funny. Derek you used to be an amazing person and in the past would have done whatever it took to make things right, shame on you. Ps. He charges the clients he knows who have a ton of money more btw… same crap for all but charges you by your pocket book. So if you do go to him, make sure he doesn’t know your income. This is very hard for me to write because of my history with Derek. Derek has been doing my hair for 20 years plus and in September I went to him for a trim and mentioned I wanted bangs. He started cutting my hair from the very back and kept cutting, I said Derek, I have no idea what you’re doing back there and in his great style he was saying it’s going to be great. Well, it was anything but. He cut my below shoulder length hair which is thick and not curly but not straight hard to handle hair into a Richard Marks haircut from the 80’s. I left trying to tell myself its not so bad. When I got home I cried my eyes out and texted Derek and I(he texted me back) basically saying wtf were you thinking and this needs to be fixed. It only got shorter and much worse. He basically said he didn’t know what he was thinking and that he’s sorry. I tried to convince myself it’s just hair and unfortunately, I am pissed still and hate my hair. He did reimburse me however I feel he should do more. He knows what more is and hasn’t responded. Hes admitted he was having a bad day and he messed up, but won’t give me what will make me feel/look a bit more feminine. I adore Derek and think he DID amazing hair but not after this and not after I’ve asked him to fix this. Every girl wants gorgeous hair, I had amazing hair and Derek has ruined it. I believe I know why he did what he did and I could«out» this, but won’t, yet anyway. I want this fixed and he knows what should be done. I’m beyond upset and so disappointed.

I’ve been going to Derek for over 7 years and his new studio is the best. A hidden gem in the middle of Hollywood, the salon feels warm and inviting. I love sitting on the porch or under the trees in the garden. Derek has the gift of being able to see what is needed and the artistry and skill to create it. He’s also a very grounded man and offers natural beauty and tips in a world that can often place emphasis on things that are fleeting and shallow. He is the most skilled hair stylist I’ve ever had here in LA or in NYC. I love Derek Smart my Sheer Genius!

I have finally found someone who understands my hair! Derek is an artist; a hair genius. Not only does he have an expansive understanding of the science of hair, he has the kind of rare creative vision to which most hairstylists can only aspire. I am so thrilled that he has opened his very own salon, because he runs it with the same generosity of spirit that he uses when he approaches a head of hair; he treats each client with grace, kindness and an open heart. Most importantly, you will get a great cut!(and color, and styling!) I love Derek and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a new stylist:)

Hands down Derek is the best hairstylist I’ve ever seen that’s why I keep coming back for the last 15 years. Even when I lived in New York and San Francisco I always flew in to have my hair done at least 3 times a year. Now I’m fortunate to be living back in LA. Everytime I get my hair done I get complaints for weeks. And it always seems to last months and months especially when my hair was long. The color was gorgeous and natural and the cuts keep getting better with each passing week. I don’t know how he does it. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after moving back to Los Angeles. It was Derek that cut off my gorgeous hair for a charity and shaved my head. I had to wait a whole year to get back into his salon chair. I even brought my children in for cuts just so I could enjoy the atmosphere. Over this last year my hair has grown back and Derek has kept me looking fabulous the whole way. From bleached tips, to funky mohawk, to 50’s movie star to contemporary woman. Its always a pleasure to be with Derek and he always makes me feel so beautiful. Truly an artist. I adore the new salon and love the vintage style and comfort. My children adore him and they feel welcome while I’m getting my hair done. I recently went in for a blow out and Derek told me he does a special gloss treatment every time you get a blow out. Way better than blow dry bar! All this talking about Derek makes me want to book an appointment right now!

I’ve been living in LA12 and in that time I have frequently changed my hairstyle and color. I have suffered through some terrible stylists who convinced me to smooth my frizz with Brazilian Blowout treatments, and extensive products and tools. I get my regular color at Sally Hershberger but now that the God of Hair is independent — I see no reason to suffer through non-attentive service with ego driven and image driven stylists and clientele. Derek is a true expert, direct and professional colorist and stylist. He never up sells me on products, services or OMBRE. He put gloss on my hair without adding extra charges to my blowdry appointment. Derek’s studio is a vintage salon and every piece has meaning. One of his chairs at the salon held the most famous derrière in Hollywood — Marilyn Monroe! No loud, obnoxious music, stylists vying for customers, stylists ushering you in and out or criticizing your hair so they can make you feel bad and recommend pricier and unneccessary services. Derek takes his time because hair is art — his tools are his paintbrush. Your hair is his canvas! I have never left happier or felt more confident in the service provided.

Derek is amazing — a true artist. The new salon is gorgeous, relaxing and private. You get 100% of his attention — not assistants doing all the work. My hair has never looked better.

Wonderful color and cuts! My hair receives so many compliments after seeing Derek! The salon experience here feels like a day spa, so relaxing, personal and friendly! Parking on the drive, selection of teas and coffees offered. Blow drys, treatments and glosses also available. Highly recommend!
