When I lived on the Hill, Hedrick was the worst and least diverse(food-wise) of all the UCLA dining halls. All the food is basically the same(pizza, hot dog, burgers, etc.) and tastes pretty bland. There was very little seating so it was always a rush to grab seats. And since I lived at Hitch and Hedrick Summit, it was the closest dining hall to eat it. At least it’s all-you-can-eat! So if you’re super hungry and not too picky about your food. Chow down. Myself, I would suggest grabbing some Rendezvous or eating at Covel instead.

This place is so far and was recently closed down for renovations because it failed some inspection. Well, after the renovation, the restaurant looks a lot newer and the food is somewhat fresher and better than the other dining halls, but unfortunately still really bad in comparison to off campus food. The dining hall is small and there is barely enough seating room, leaving long lines out the door.

Gotta love Hedrick. Since I am not living in the dorms anymore, I pay $ 9 for dinner. But that is extremely reasonable for food in Westwood, especially if you want salad. I filled a huge bowl full of various greens, couscous, and other delectable veggies. If you get a salad in Ackerman, you’re gonna pay a lot to fill you up. Here, there are the usually burgers and pizza as well as two other dishes of the night. They also have dessert and coffee and tea. If you’re a hungry student, this is definitely a great option.

UCLA had Bruin Day this weekend, and at the end of the dorm tour, there was an offer to get an all you can eat meal ticket for six bucks per person. Compared to the 12 bucks person at Hometown Buffet and the like, the offer sounded attractive already. I already heard that Hedrick does not have the best of the dorm foods, but it was on the way to the next tour and it’ll suffice. The food was so amazing I practically made my college decision on the spot. There were a lot of people, but the place was not crowded at all. There was a variety of food that was tasty and healthy. The hamburgers are made on the spot and the soups are unique and different every day. I love that they have different kinds of rice, since I am a brown rice specialist. Dessert did not disappoint either, with five different kinds of pies, ice cream, tarts, and fruits. There are many ways to be creative and mix and match different foods together as well.

The butt of all dining hall jokes. This place is not known to serve the best food, so hardly anyone goes here and as a result their hours are considerably limited. It’s never crowded here so you’ll always get a space, and you’ll see the same people over and over again because only the people that live in Hedrick court go here. Does have music playing overheard.

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Breakfast is also the best meal served at UCLA. Hedrick dining hall offers breakfast twice on Thursdays — breakfast foods now served Thursday nights! Woo-hoo! However, the Thursday night breakfast selection is limited to omelets, waffles, french toast, and pancakes. The food being similar to the food offered at the other dining halls, what makes Hedrick one step above the others is it is usually not crowded and the view behind dessert bar is nice — green fields.

While De Neve is the largest dining hall, its food tastes pretty much the same. This past year, Hedrick had the Pan Asian test foods. They also have bomb turkey AND/or portabello mushroom burgers on thursdays(that’s right, you can combine them!) They also have sushi on some days — but it’s not that great. I like Hedrick best though because it seems to have better foods compared to the other dining halls when I deem them too bland to eat. And because it’s the least crowded and has the largest selection for cereal. =] It therefore makes it worth the walk if you’re farther from this place compared to the others — trust me. Some weird things: their seats take up too much room; they have the arm rests and are circular, so it’s harder to get in and out.

Dorm food is dorm food is dorm food. I can’t stress that enough. Despite the variety present at Hedrick and all the other dining halls, everything starts tasting the same. Hedrick desserts and salad bar are kind of meh in comparison to Covel and De Neve. I also don’t understand why people rave about the sushi here. Sure, it’s free, but I rarely, if ever, see any raw fish in the roll. Hedrick is your dining hall to go to when you want to take a chance. Sometimes, their entrees are surprisingly good. Instead of shaking your head in disgust and cursing the monotony of dorm food flavors, you actually go back for more. And oppositely, when the food is as bad as you thought it’d be, you just sigh and either push it to the side or force it down and get some soft-serve ice cream to eliminate the flavor. The best thing about Hedrick is that it’s relatively empty in comparison to De Neve and Covel since the general consensus believes those are better. To each their own, I guess.

When I was a student back at UCLA days, dorm food honestly kind of sucked. Not only was some of the food lacking in taste, but there was no variety. Back in my mid-late 90s UCLA dorm days(yes Im dating myself) all they pretty much had was pizza, burgers and hot dogs. Now adays the food almost seems catered and much more tasteful and the variety is unheard of. Sushi? we never had sushi in the dorms. They even have crazy Thai and Korean BBQ dishes. Like I said the food tastes alot better and they seem to use fresher ingredients. Also being staff at UCLA, i get in for 4 bucks. 4 bucks for all you can eat thats insane. One bad thing though about eating at hedrick its the farthest dorm on campus and a long walk. So after you eat I guess you get to walk it off after.

This is a review for Hedrick during the summer, not during the school year. I consider Hedrick to be the middle of the three dining halls(De Neve being better, Covel being worse). It’s fine, but it feels a little cramped from time-to-time. Pros to Hedrick: 1. They’re open later for breakfast and for dinner. Want to swipe for breakfast on the weekend but not be up before 9am? Hedrick has hot food until 9:45am and will let you swipe in until 10:30am. Huzzah. 2. Hedrick is full of summer school students and not conference guests. Students understand how to use a dining hall; conference guests do not. Double huzzah. Too bad it’s up a hill and the food isn’t any better.

4 — stars for a dining hall/2.5 stars for a legitimate restaurant When I was a student at UCLA, I LOVED the Hedrick Dining Hall. Although I didnt live all the way up there, I would make the trek to the top of the hill just to eat there. I’m not sure how much it’s changed since I lived in the dorms, but I just wanted to give a shout out to the workers up there. I really enjoyed their sushi days on Monday and Thursdays. They also had a full salad bar(with low cal honey mustard & Asian seasame dressing) which I don’t think any of the other dining halls had. I think Hedrick has the most variety out of all the res halls, and they really stacked their desserts. I really enjoyed their ethnic station in the back. Although it wasn’t authentic, I think its as close as you can get when you are trying to serve 2,000 students every night. I really didn’t mind the walk up there because I usually stuffed myself at the dining halls. The long walk was a great way to burn off the calories and fat I consumed while at Hedrick! Ahhhhh great memories!!! For those who don’t dorm and want to try the food there, I think you can pay like 10 bucks at the door and its all you can eat! Keep in mind the 10 dollars is on top of the 10 dollars you pay for UCLA Parking, which is whack!!!
