So Pehrspace in general is a place to know. It’s 18+, volunteer run, and filled with all sorts of DIY madness– arts n crafts parties, screenprinting tutorials, and strange local bands that record on cassette tapes. But there is one event in particular that I have a major soft spot for– their monthly gay sockhop. I know. I know. They hawk vintage soda, teach you how to swing(non-gendered dance roles, of course) and trick you into dancing with strangers and getting photographed in all your pompadourian glory. There is a pretty good mix of guys and gals. It’s usually on a Monday. It’s always amazing. Schedule here:

Arty /cool kid hole in the back of a strip mall that looks like a parking lot in the middle of not to much going on. Music can be an interesting hit or major miss. But interesting scene nonetheless. More chill than many venues. Cool that it’s byob, but if you don’t/forget to bring something and need something it takes a while to find somewhere you can, which is only a wine bar a couple blocks away. The progressive scene warrants my award of an extra star.

Yay, I love Pehrspace! All ages, BYOB, clean bathroom, plenty of room inside and out, cheap shows, sound’s alright, the bands play on the floor right in front of you — I couldn’t ask for anything more in a venue. You can park on the street or in the lot, and bring cash for the door fee. You want to find up and coming bands? Pehr is the best place in Los Angles — watch them and see. Long live Pehr!

As I stated in my review of the Echo, a decade ago I was cool. I went to shows weekly, knew about all the indie bands, and almost exclusively wore band shirts and thrift store clothes. Now I am not cool, and I rarely go see live music, and somehow when I do it’s at Staples(New Kids on the Block anyone?). I’ve known about Pehrspace for a dozen years, but this was my first time going. I think I’m old. Back in the day, I was at the Smell all the time and thought the maggots in the alley were funny and accepted that I’d come home stinking like cigarettes and with dust-encrusted boogers, and now at Pehrspace I’m all, It’s crowded and humid and is that guy smoking inside and wow this is totally a death trap if there’s a fire(one exit, small doorways. To be fair, I also knew the Smell was a deathtrap, but simply didn’t care. I haven’t been there in forever, so perhaps there is now an additional exit. I digress). And now everyone plays on their smart phones between bands instead of talking or trying to impress others by talking about the rare colored vinyl 7“s they own(there were only 250 pressed, but, you know, I got one when I saw that band last year, before anyone knew about them. Maybe they’ll press it again, but probably on regular vinyl). So! I saw a show where a few bands that broke up years ago reunited and rocked out and people were super stoked and there was a long line and not everyone got in. Bummer: there’s no stage, and so shorties like me end up staring at the back of someone’s t-shirt, and I’m guessing plenty of others could barely see. The lack of stage also means that when everyone started moshing or whatever they call it nowadays to the Mae Shi, the band ended up flattened against the drum kit or standing on chairs. Equipment got knocked over, something got unplugged, and my right arm got covered in some dude’s sweat(ew)(he wasn’t even cute). There was a dedicated sound guy and the sound was actually pretty good. I liked the art on the walls, but the place was so packed that there was no way for me to walk around to see it all(it was dark anyway). Poor ventilation meant the floor was damp at the end of the show from the body heat. I’d go back, but only if I knew the event wasn’t going to be so popular. I highly suggest looking at the website before you go, because there are photos of the strip mall Pehrspace is located in. Had there not been a line/crowd outside, I’d have never found it. Also, props to Pehrspace for a being a non-profit, volunteer-run venue. $ 5 cover — can’t beat that.

Was here last week The good: see indie bands in an intimate small space, no light show bullshit. Grimy, no pretense unless a parking lot is pretentious. Local art on the walls. The bad: short changed me for just a few bucks. Keep it; but it only makes you a cheap nickle hustler. I wont go back. Go to Bootleg or the Smell. Or support bands & buy their merch. Peace

If you come on a Monday night when Sean Carnage does his weekly show you’ll most definitely see something totally unique that you won’t forget for the rest of your life. For example one time a band brought a box with them onstage. They opened it up and revealed the biggest blue painter’s tarp i’ve ever seen. Almost as soon as the tarp was unleashed the crowd made a giant parachute with it and started to mosh underneath to totally atonal noise music. It’s kind of hard to find if you’ve never been before since it’s nestled in the corner of this strange semi-industrial parking lot. The art is hit-or-miss it’s more about the weirdness of a Monday night there. Plus it’s only $ 5

This place is a great underground hub in this city. All shows are $ 5 and it’s BYOB. People are friendly and welcoming. It’s a nice intimate space with a good assortment of bands.

Absolutely top notch. I’m normally kind of negative about hipster hideouts, but this place redeems all unnecessarily eccentric breeds of LA-ites with great ease. Saw a couple of bands last night, one which had violins and cellos, a singer who screamed dark, introspective lyrics, and the last, «Ill Babies», which knocked me straight on my ass, literally, as a mosh pit convulsed to the sounds of an allegedly 4’11″ cute lesbian girl shrieking into the microphone and bouncing around in all quadrants of the dance floor. Absolutely electric, tight band. It’s BYOB, and you will meet people who share your interests and views on things if you talk to people. Easy to bum a cigarette here. A paltry $ 5 for so much fun, networking and music. A must if you’re a craver of anything indie.

I had heard some good things about this place from a friend who perviously visited this place for a gallery opening, but this time I was invited to watch a few bands play. Little did I know, Vice Cooler was playing, and he was ready to rock the mic. We got there just in time to watch Secret Friends play, and a stand-up comedy duo called New Dreams. Both acts were pretty interested, but I really only stuck around for VICECOOLER. At $ 5 bucks, you really can’t beat an intimate show with Vice Cooler! Vice tore it up and play a really sick show. Although the band area is really small, Vice made everyone feel like he was playing some kind of huge stadium. He really put on a show! The place is decorated with all kinds of fresh art pieces, which really adds character to the place once you get in. Parking is free in the main lot and there’s also some space in the back to park. It’s BYOB, so you just have to remember to hit up the store for some brew before you start the night. Looking forward to more sick shows at this place in the future!

This is another on of those art spaces that is used to present underground music. As this sort of space goes, Pehrspace does a pretty darn good job. There’s usually at least a little light on the band(it would be cool if they’d turn the little spots for the artwork toward the bands when they play), a decent PA(with a monitor or two for the band), and a small drum riser. There’s no stage, of course, but this is nothing more than some repackaged office space. It’s not as good as a «real» venue for music, but it’s one of the best art spaces that does double duty. As a bonus, things typically seem to run relatively on time, so you can plan your evening around the entertainment portion.

A night at Pehrspace is what I would imagine an art school dorm party to be like: BYOB, small minimally adorned room, and edgy music. There’s no sign outside of this nondescript art /music house, so just look for a crowd milling around outside and you’re probably at the right place. The night I went, a dude was performing who can best be described as a one-man-band/rapper/performance artist. By the end of his set, he was on the floor spinning in circles while the crowd(50 people or so) clapped, chanted, jumped in unison, and passed around a stuffed unicorn. Anyone who stepped into the room would have thought we were in a cult. Awesome night.

i imagine this is a place Janis Joplin/Jim Morrison/John Lennon would have liked. Its really DIY, hippie, beat, BYOB-tasic, communal, really dance around and jam out to something you like without caring about what the pretentious asshole thinks of you — probably cause they are all at Spaceland. I did a craft fair here and everyone was really nice and the bands playing were an added bonus… I was given earplugs and didn’t use them instead i was squishing them in my pockets all night.

Clean and well curated, Pehrspace is a kind of small oasis in Los Angeles. Local and touring acts share many lineups and shows are rarely more than $ 5. After leaving Il Corral, promoter Sean Carnage brought his Monday nights here and things have worked out quite well. Sean is one of the few promoters who consistently books engaging bands as well as up and coming groups who would not get booked elsewhere. Pehrspace seems to be well loved by those who frequent it. It should be around for a long time as long as they continue to support and take care of it.

Not your typical venue. I’ll be the first to admit that I stick out like a sore thumb here. A bunch of artsy indie kids, pants just don’t get any tighter than the ones I’ve seen. Nevertheless, people were genuinely nice and friendly, even though you’d think they’d give you shit for not wearing mismatched secondhand outfits. An art gallery by day and an eclectic music venue by night, I can honestly say that I’ve never been to a place like this before. Yet, it was all g-double o-d, good. A place where everyone knows your name(except mine), and free homemade cookies and muffins are just begging to be devoured. I came on a Friday to see my friend’s band, and they were awesome as usual. It was an interesting experience, much like watching a local band play in your neighbor’s garage. The performers were literally standing 5 feet away from the audience. Although a total of 10 people were there at 10:30, it was crowded with all sorts of people by midnight. Oh yeah, most importantly, BYOB.
