Definitely one of the best local bars with good drinks and eats. We came here for brunch on a Sunday and ordered the chiliquiles(sp.) and breakfast burger. And… You can’t forget about the Sriracha chicken wings. De-li-cious! If you are looking for a sit-down dining experience with a server to wait on you, probably not the place but the service was still great. We ordered at the bar and were given a number and the food runner came out with our food timely. She was friendly and was hustling as the bar started getting busier. We’ll be back soon!

This place looked interesting but turned out to be a complete down. Walked in with a friend abd say at the bar to have a drink, bartender walked up to my friend and took his drink order abd completely ignored me for some reason. Sat there for about 10mins while my friend drank and watched the bartender who looked like a overweight hipster with thick black frame glasses walked by me serval times even after I raised my hand as if I was back in school. At that point it seemed as if the bartender was even avoiding eye contact with me. Needless to say we left abd will not go back. No comprehension of why I want served or even acknowledged. I was wearing a bright pink shirt at the time and would hate to think this was because of any kind of discrimination based on what I was wearing and the bartenders beliefs.

This place came highly recommended so my husband and I were very excited to try it. We came starving which usually is good for Unilocal ratings. Unilocal is right on with the rating of this place. It was very mediocre. I ordered the steak with chimichurri and fries, my husband had the ceaser salad and pulled pork sandwhich. he actually sent back the Caesar salad. He enjoyed his pork sandwich. Even in my starving state I could tell that my steak was just ok. This seems like a great place to get a burger and a beer but next time I would skip the steak or the salad. I would not go out of my way to come back here.

I love this bar! Always try to find an excuse to get my coworkers to tag along with me after work. They have good beer, good food, great staff(look for Tommy he is awesome!) and just a great vibe in general! The chalkboard menu is kind of hard to read but its cute. They do have a bouncer that cards at the door after a certain time. Not sure if its everyday or just like on weekends or something.

First, got ignored on a slow Saturday for 8 minutes by a dude in sunglasses that weren’t necessary, then he proceeded to make the Worst Bloody Mary I think I’ve ever had. Seriously, I had to go back and ask another bartender for worchester sauce and horse radish. I basically made my own drink because it was horrid. Learn how to bartend dude, I’m sure there’s classes out there. The eggs Benny was good though.

I used to love this place, but it seems like it’s going down hill. Most of the bartenders seem really miserable for some reason, and the cocktails are spotty if not downright awful. It looks like they’ve been promoting bar-backs instead of getting trained bartenders that know how to make cocktails properly. And I really wish they would get some Luxardo cherries instead of those red dye #5 cherries… nobody wants that in their old fashioned. The beer is still great. And the food here is ok, although pricey. That being said, most of my friends prefer to go somewhere else now. I wish this place would get their act together; I want to love it again.

I can only do The York on a Sunday afternoon. When it’s dead, slow & chill & I can actually have a conversation over some booze. Good luck trying that on a Friday/Saturday night. Everyone’s packed inside like sardines. No where to sit, no where to stand. I dare you try to order food during this time. And then everyone is trying to out do one another on how loud they can yap away about some none sense that ain’t even funny. The masses thrive in these social settings though. Friday/Saturday night might be for you, homie. If you happen to swoop in on a Sunday, don’t forget about your girl! Your Homegirl, Violy P the mother effin S! I actually like the food here. The burger, mac n cheese, the wings, the pulled pork Cuban sandwich. Worth having with your beer or cocktail.

I like this bar because it is very chill and has a great whiskey selection. I went on a Sunday to watch football and UFC with my friends. Yes it’s not a sports bar, but just when UFC started, they changed the tv to a classic movie channel. I was told the owner doesn’t like violence. Very poor to me to not listen to customers. The food was terrible. I’d rather have the Dragon back than the York!

As far as I’m concerned, the only good thing about this place is the food. We stopped here when we were in Highland Park. Apparently they close their kitchen from 2 – 3 or something, so we had to wait for them to even start our food(having arrived around 2:40). They don’t have any blinds on the front windows so the sun was really fucking bright and was bothering my friend facing that way. The décor inside isn’t anything special at all. AND they don’t have waitresses. You have to go up to the bar to order food, which they don’t explain when you get there so you’re left to figure it out yourself. The bartender didn’t give a fuck about anything. Not impressed.

Didn’t really like the bartenders here. 3 men one women. The men seemed miserable. Although their margarita was actually pretty tasty. Will give it another shot. Just not anytime soon.

Love that this place is a block from my sis! Great atmosphere! Great staff and service! Love the jukebox, i always play pat benatar when i’m there chillin with the cuzzos! Their cheddar burger and their chicken sriracha wings are bomb but a bit pricey! I don’t drink beer but i do love me some cocktails! I usually order a midori sour or a malibu pineapple. Overall an awesome bar or gastropub(i don’t even know the difference lol) with great vibes!

Don’t live in the area and don’t get the Highland Park hype. Decent beer selection. Food seems overpriced for what you get. Great staff!

Perfectly fine spot if you’re only going for drinks. Pretty good beers — a unique selection without crossing over into that annoying zone where everything appealing on the menu has to be served in ridiculously tiny goblets or chalice glasses. The food leads quite a bit to be desired, so I’d avoid it all-together. We thought we’d order a few things to start and follow our guts as the night went along. But after the first round, we ended up leaving to get food elsewhere before coming back for a couple more drinks. It was that sad. The atmosphere is super casual. Saw a few older dudes in random hoodies, dad jeans, and hideous walking/running shoes. When you enter the place, make sure you turn left — assuming you’re an ambi-turner(not all of us are). As the menus are posted up on the right side of the restaurant, you’ll have a bunch of annoying people standing around right behind or next to your seats if you choose that side of the establishment.

Very cool spot with a huge selection of alcohol but since i prefer a brew I couldn’t tell you how stiff or good the drinks are .Food smelled really good but we did not eat. Good vibe all around at the York! Only thing that sucked was that after leaving because my buddy wanted a juke box and then realize they had one is that after picking 18 songs we never got to hear them because we assume that we were 100 songs behind Haha enjoy that mix of Jack white, emenim and van Morrison people!

Amazing place. Having grown up in Highland park and moving, I hadn’t been back in a while. Going back and seeing the changes was a little unnerving. But this place rocked! I went with my cousin who still lives there and omg I love the ambiance, the drinks, the hipster people, even the bathroooms that look like beach bathrooms with full Metal toilets lol and the penis on the wall and bad poetry. I highly recommend it!

Guess I should have read the reviews. One star for a pretty cool vibe, 2 stars for a good selection of tasty dishes, but no stars for service unfortunately. Hard to find napkins and cutlery(the tables just had empty cutlery containers that were never refilled) and was hard to get the attention of any of the bartenders even though they didn’t seem very busy. People who dropped off our food also didn’t notice we didn’t have any napkins/utensils and didn’t hang around long enough for us to ask. Kind of annoying that the only menu in the restaurant was written up on a wall so you have to keep going back to linger over whatever table is seated under it to figure out what you want. Had some nice qualities but the lack of service and convenience would probably keep me from coming back. Just isn’t welcoming.

+Food: Decent gastropub food. However I think it’s definitely a little bit pricey($ 15-$ 19 a dish). They also do brunch on the weekends which is decent. +Drinks: I’m talking solely about their beers on tap and canned beers. I haven’t tried their cocktails. They have a nice selection and the drinks seem reasonably priced to me. +Ambiance: I think it looks a little hip and a little divey. They have live music on certain times of the day. +Parking: Plenty of street parking –Price: Because it’s hip, it’s a little bit more pricey –Service: Everyone seemed really unhappy and unfriendly. Not sure if I was just there on an off day but that really killed the vibe. Overall: A-OK. Not a bad place to hangout but not my favorite.

The York is a gastropubby bar that serves food until the kitchen closes and booze until the door closes. I’m more a fan of the food portion, and in particular, I like the steak-fries-salad dish. It has a desirable ambiance that caters to the twenty-something or hipster going out in Highland Park.

This review is solely on a single experience, I do want to point out I’ve had previous good ones. I used to really love this place until 1 day ago. If I’m not tipping you, do not take the liberty to tip yourself. If you’re eating or drinking at the bar, check your bank account and keep your receipts because the female bartender is tipping herself. I didn’t tip for a reason and she still gave herself $ 5 after I signed the receipt for the amount I paid for. It’s not about the money, it’s about the principle. Just FYI.

Ugh, so disappointed! I really wanted to love this place because it’s so close to me & my bf’s house. The place is BEAUTIFUL! So cute, super hipster. Very cozy. That’s pretty much as good as this review is gonna get. As for edible things all I can remember is the taste of LEMON. Everything just tasted like lemons! Way too much lemons. Let’s start with the drinks(which is why you come to a bar to begin with): T E R R I B L E. We got something called the animator or something and a sailor moon. Sailor Moon tasted like a super watered down iced lemonade, but without the«ade» maybe just super watered down sour ass lemon juice. Not good. Animator tasted like straight bourbon and water, but nasty. Idk it wasn’t good. I don’t mind strong drinks, but this was strong and watered down at the same time and the flavors didn’t mesh well. They overcharged us by $ 1 on our bill for one of the drinks, but I didn’t complain. We just tipped a dollar less than we would have. Food: We got the Cheddar Burger and Truffle Grilled Cheese. Cheddar Burger you can definitely pass on. Nothing special. The Truffle Grilled cheese is probably why I gave this place an extra star. Super stringy cheese when you pull it apart. The bread is thick and moist with butter(at least i think its butter). BUTTHESALADOMG… again, LEMONS! It tasted like lemon leaves! It just tasted like lemon-drenched arugula. I loooove arugula but this«dressing» or whatever ruined it. Service: TERRIBLEX2. The bartenders were not nice and neither was the ONE person who came around to ask us if we needed anything. Actually I don’t think she asked, I think we asked her for some ketchup and she acted like we were a bother or something. As soon as we took our last bite, she was quick to clean our table. Ambiance: The music was good at first. They played BB king style music. Then all of a sudden they would change it to some rock music then back and forth and back and forth between the 2 genres. It was nice as first when it was all BB king, but then the constant changing really made the mood weird. Then all of a sudden, there was like a 15 minute moment when the music just stopped. Super weird. Were they fighting over playlists? Whats going on here guys. Bottom line: Skip this place and go to another bar.

The York really is a cool place to go for a drink! I’ve had this gastropub on my bookmarks for ages and was finally able to pop in on Christmas Eve with my sister who was in town from The Big Island. I am constantly trying to find new places to take her because there are so many beautiful open air restaurants and pubs in Hawaii. I am happy to say she and I both loved it. We sat at the bar which is wood and it’s the nicest one I’ve seen since the Kona Inn. My sister helped refinish the bar at the Kona Inn after the last hurricane and she noted how gorgeous the bar at The York is. Chris was our bartender and he was very nice. My sister asked for ideas and he recommended the Pear Martini. She loved it and had two. I was driving so I just had ½ of a Stone Pale Ale. Chris went off duty and I didn’t get the next bartender’s name, but she was hilarious. We did not order any food, but I’ll definitely be back because I really liked the place. I think this would be a great place for UYE. Stephanie P. if you read this let’s set something up since you are a regular. Happy New Year to my wonderful Unilocal friends! I wish you all the best in health, happiness and prosperity. It has been a pleasure being friends with you this past year. xoxo
