Lummi Island Ferry Terminal

I give the crew an overall 5 stars. The island talk is «who still holds a smile» and «who can load the boat full». One of those talents get 5 stars.
The boat itself, well, it only receives two stars. It’s really cute but its a rust bucket, narrow lanes and if you’re in a wheelchair forget it. The county that operates it gets one star. The main reason Whatcom County gets one star is because they turned down 8 million dollars of state money to replace our cute little rust bucket. What motivated me to write this review? The new preloading line on the mainland is confounding.

I have very rare occasions to ride a ferry. In fact up until our recent trip to the Pac NW, the only ferry I’ve ridden in a long time is the one at Walt Disney World when heading to Magic Kingdom.
This little ferry takes you from Washington over to Lummi Island. It’s a cute little island with a few places to grab a bite to eat. Unfortunately our navigator — NOT an avid Unilocal user — failed to realize the café wasn’t open on our adventure. I don’t really have any comparison for fair ferry pricing, but for the four of us round trip it was $ 34 to ride over to the island.
One tip is to definitely check the schedule. Even though they have a set schedule, it can change depending on the tides and the weather.

***This ferry takes you to and from Washington to Lummi Island, which is home of the very nice bed and breakfast Willows Inn (an exceptional fine dining tasting menu is served at Willows Inn Thursday night thru Sunday night); this ferry seems expensive, but I am not familiar with ferry pricing so the prices here might be reasonable (it is $ 13 per vehicle with driver for one round trip and $ 7 for each additional passenger); despite the seemingly high prices, getting from Washington to Lummi Island is quick with this ferry and it is the kind of adventure and experience that you will not find in most parts of the country (even if you live along the coast)***
You can park for free along the street before jumping onto the ferry for Lummi Island; you need to be careful where you park though because some areas are private property (tow away areas).

I went on a foggy Washington morning and it’s something somewhat eerie about the less than 10 minute trip from Gooseberry Ferry Terminal to the Lummi Island Ferry Terminal. This ferry is really fast and has a lot of variety in the schedule. It runs about every 20 minutes depending on the day.
I was somewhat bewildered when I drove up to the Gooseberry terminal since most ferry terminals have like a pay station or kiosk. For this jaunt you pay once you get on the ferry. Price as of 10÷22÷14, was $ 13 round trip.
There is an average amount of parking if you plan on walking on or going on with a bike. There is also a modest bathroom complete with a heater and it’s for one person only.
