I knew this store existed, but I could never figure out where it was. A friend of mine showed me where it is, and once inside I was like a kid in a candy store! Book Attic is located next door to Babies R’ Us. It’s a pretty small store, but the owner has maximized the space really well. The books are listed by genre, and then by author. The store’s main focus seems to be on paperback fiction, but there is a section that is for hardback books as well. The books are all very decently priced, and seem comparable to what one would pay at most library book sales. I’ve only been once, but I definitely plan to go again!

My boyfriend was so sad when we drove by their old location by DSW to find they were gone. Luckily we Unilocaled to find another local used bookstore and found they had just moved down the street in the same lot as the Babies R Us and Michael’s. It’s not large but does have a good selection of classic fiction and poetry. While I didn’t explore the History section they seemed to have a good selection including areas for TN history and Nashville history. Also, if you’re into Romance novels, they seemed to have a lot. Their prices were reasonable and the ladies who were running the place — I assume the owners — were very nice — helpful without being intrusive. I’ll definitely be back when I finish what I bought yesterday!

You know, I don’t have much experience in second hand bookstores to compare this one to. I found the store to be decently well priced(the average book is in great condition and costs $ 8.00). The store is organized by both category and by popular authors. I found my happiness in the«modern fiction» section and picked up: The Alchemist and Anne Patchett’s State of Wonder. The ladies working there were helpful– something tells me they know the entire inventory by heart :)

When it comes to bookstores, my mantra is «No bad bookstores». I’ve rarely been disappointed; and the Book Attic kept that streak going. This is a great used bookstore. Nearly hidden at the end of a shopping center, there’s a sign on the marquee by the street and on the face of the building that makes it easy to find once you’re in the parking lot. Book Attic maximizes the use of space and feels bigger than it probably is — sort of like a real Time and Relative Dimension in Space machine. The lay-out is nice, the aisles are big enough to check out the books on the bottom shelf without blocking the way for someone trying to get past, has easy to find genres, and is owned/staffed by people who probably have every book title memorized. Okay — so that’s probably not true, but when I asked for the science fiction section(my bookstore go-to area), she walked me back to it, and pointed out the closely-related genres in close proximity. I was impressed with the selection. As I was making my purchase, she explained the policies on buy-back without my asking. Most used bookstores make you ask about the policy, hand you a slip of paper that reads like Klingon manifesto and makes about as much sense, or don’t share the policy until you bring books in for sale/trade. I thought this was a useful approach even though I won’t be bringing my books back. Small, independently run bookstores, and used bookstores particularly, always seem to be in short supply. I’m glad I found this one and only wish it were closer

I’m always impressed when locally owned underdogs like this can survive when sandwiches between behemoth chain stores. This isn’t your average odds and ends collection of unwanted books– they specialize in hardbacks and hard to find books. Book Attic boasts an impressive collection with reasonable prices. They avoid taking in any ‘soon to be a major motion picture’ releases, and opt for classics and rarities instead. I always have a couple of these titles in mind that I’m hunting for, and this shop is for of this type of books. The ladies were very helpful and I was impressed to see how many regulars they attracted.
