We are from Los Angeles and maybe were just spoiled with great sushi?! This place was over priced for the service and quality/freshness of the fish. I don’t mind paying top dollar for good food, but top dollar for mediocre food is a bit hard to swallow. The UNI was dark and runny. I had to send it back. The toro was a mediocre and it was $ 24 for 2 pieces of sushi. Really!!! Seems the prices don’t match the quality of fish. The couple thAt runs the place did not care we sent it back for freshness nor did they care about the service of the customers overall. Defiantly would not recommend this place to anyone that is used to great quality sushi.

Not that impressed by this establishment. Maybe it’s because we didn’t order sushi. They ordered 4 sandwiches which were all made on ciabatta bread. Which by the way if you tell your customers it’s made with ciabatta bread, don’t assume they know what kind it is. I basically had to explain to them what sort of bread it was.Smh. They ordered two tuna which came with tomatoes and lettuce and I think mayo. Also two bacon lettuce tomatoes. My dad enjoyed the bacon in his sandwich. Said it taste better than the mainland. Also the tuna was fresh or made in house. It didn’t have them at gross smell like the ones you buy from the can lol! I just ordered a mocha, which was made with 2% milk FYI in case you want non-fat.they don’t have it. Also I was gonna order a macchiato but I guess it just comes as an espresso shot so no can do s-vill baby doll. The customer service was lacking that’s why they missing the stars. No aloha spirit. Parents will probably return but doubt I will

Great little place. Very quiet and unassuming, only locals eating when we were there. Not fancy, but great sushi. Got Ramen for the teenagers, which was ok, but they were disappointed with sparse amount of chicken in the bowl. The hubby and I ordered rainbow roll and dynamite roll. Fantastic presentation and tasted wonderful. Great sushi!

April 27, 2016 Read the Unilocal recommendations and couldn’t wait to head to the restaurant and taste the sushi for myself. Totally was not disappointed! I agree that the special rolls were on the high-side, but the sushi tastes delicious and the price was totally worth it! We ordered the Rainbow Roll and avocado and kompyo maki-both well made. I could tell that the fish they served were fresh. Loved the small setting! Definitely my new favorite place to go to for sushi-can’t wait to go back!

Very disappointing overall! We were hungry after a hike to the volcano and wanted to have our last meal in Maui before we fly back home. We found this place on Unilocal, but we almost walked out of the place as soon as we opened the door. It looked like a tiny store that sells everything cheap in town. No one was eating there. No one greeted us with usual high pitched hello in Japanese either. The price was crazy high. Being a tiny sushi /roll take-out place, it should be cheaper than sushi restauants in busy touristic areas like Kihei. But the average price of rolls were $ 20. Menu was quite limited, and worse, the disinterested waitress brought out another menu only after we asked for it later. I thought that was very odd. I have to say the quality of food wasn’t that bad, but it doesn’t justify the price in its substandard setting and service. I’ve been to many small Japanese restaurants run by families, with excellent services and attention to details. Obviously, this is not the place.

myself, husband and keiki went and ate at this sushi bar… the owner is the sushi chef and his daughter and wife also help out… we loved it, I think we stayed 2 hours talking story, laughing and eating over 80.00 in sushi… the boss(I think the name bob) was a real jockster and I think he felt sorry we were spending so much just the 3 of us he gave us some awesome samples for free… aloha friend if your reading this. we’ll be back soon!

Ate lunch here on a recommendation from a bike tour guide who grew up in the area, and I was pleasantly surprised. Their menu has a solid list of nigiri and sashimi plus a smaller list of rolls. Mom and pop shop. I ordered various nigiri sushi and it was all delicious and large pieces too. Also got a spicy tuna roll which was fantastic. It had diced fresh tuna mixed with spicy mayo, very different from the mashed up not-as-good type of tuna meat you’d normally expect from a spicy tuna roll. Prices were a little expensive but so is everything else in Maui. Bottom line try this place.

Such good BLT sandwiches! Staff is friendly and I greatly appreciate their integrity. We accidentally left a high quality camera and they held it for us until we realized and returned the following morning.

Wow so fresh and so yummy! We were in love with the spicy tuna roll! The spicy salmon was also delicious, we weren’t a fan of the Philadelphia roll but that was our own fault because we weren’t aware it was a cooked roll. The kids also enjoyed the yaki soba. We finished it off with some ice cream. Place was cute and clean, the servers were nice and courteous! Great place to stop by if going to the craters !

The fish is super fresh! Sushi master puts straight LOVE and dedication in his work. As hard as it seems, this actually plays a big role in the flavor of food! Great place for GREAT sushi. No regrets!

Yummy little sushi and deli. I ordered the 007 roll… Which was a little pricey coming in at 20 bucks even. Pricey but it was a very yummy fresh roll. My man ordered the Bulogi sandwich and it was only 9 and he enjoyed it very very much! We also picked up some local jams and mustards!

Small mom and pop sushi place in a cowboy town, definitely unique; however, the sushi and Nigiri were unbelievably fresh and surprisingly tasty. The prices are a bit high for sushi but you are a bit off the beaten path for sushi. We had the Nigiri sampler with the 007 and the Dynamite Rolls. The Nigiri was so fresh and you actually got big pieces of fish with just a little rice instead of tons of rice where you have to hunt for the fish. We were all impressed. The rolls were both beautifully presented and oooohhhh sooooo good! We then ordered some regular rolls that were more reasonably priced as we were still hungry. The non-specialty rolls were very good as well. Service was okay. The staffing seems family run and nobody was overly friendly; however, they were not rude either, just okay.

November 19, 2015 Thursday — 11:45AM for lunch 4 adults Atmosphere — 5 star Food — 5 stars Service — 5 stars Background — On a bus tour and we stopped in Makawao for lunch. Atmosphere — In an old building and small. But the space works for them. Food Appetizers — We order the edamame. For four people it is not much but a great way to whet your appetite for the rolls. Main course — We had order of the Nigiri sample plate, what a great way to start. We order two of their high end rolls. The 007 and B California rolls, both awesome choices, so very fresh. To help offset the cost of those high end rolls we went with some simple ones that are very reasonably priced. Service — Out of all the ratings this is the one I debated the most on. I went five because I will not ding them for the language barrier. Yeah it is that authentic. It is a small operation, a true mom and pop shop. Their execution was amazing on the rolls. Future — Love to but the town that this sushi place is in is out of the way. But we need to do the crater again as it was a rainy day and visibility was not there.

There isn’t much choice here. The sushi is ok, comparable to what you can buy from regular supermarket, but the price is on the high side. I would only recommend if you had to have to eat sushi, otherwise pick sth else.

My fiancé and I stumbled upon this great place last month. We live in the south side of the island and never really make it up to this side and was very pleased to have found this little gem. I was attracted to the sign«makawao sushi and deli.» Since I’m such a sushi fanatic. I figured it would be a great place to eat for lunch since they served sushi and sandwiches. First impression of the restaurant was not that great. It is definitely a «mom and pops» restaurant. You knew right away that they served sushi but there was not any signs of serving sandwiches. My fiancé and I was a bit confused so we just went ahead and ordered a couple rolls. First thing I noticed was how extremely pricey the sushi rolls were($ 10-$ 18). I ordered a hamachi roll, California roll, and a salmon skin roll… Surprisingly, after tasting a couple rolls I didn’t think so much about the price of the rolls because the fish was very fresh. Probably one of the best freshest sushi I’ve had in quite some time. Halfway into me completing my meal, we finally asked if they had other things in the menu other then sushi, and in fact they did. They did serve sandwiches, it was in a separate printed menu. My fiancé ordered the macadamia nut chicken sandwich. Which was pretty delicious and have never had a sandwich like that before. Overall experience is two thumbs up and definitely would recommend this place and I look forward to going back ;)

The sushi was tasty and fresh, but the $ 20 price tag on the rolls and $ 5 per hamachi nigiri were not quite justified. That’s probably why we were the only ones in the restaurant. Service was not really friendly but not rude either.

Delicious, fresh, casual, and expensive. I think you’re paying for the freshness of the fish, which I get, but $ 20/roll is the most expensive I’ve experienced. It’s definitely a deli — so don’t come expecting it to be a sushi bar or restaurant. A friend recommended this place to us, and without that, I’m not sure I would have forked out the dough. Fiancé and I got miso soups, and shared a rainbow roll. We were NOT disappointed. Very authentic, very fresh, and A LOT of bang for your buck, even if it’s $ 20. I’d recommend coming here for an afternoon snack and sharing a roll with someone.

Literally the worst place to eat on the island. We were the only people in there and the«waitress» was very unfriendly from the get go. She didn’t say hi, smile, or acknowledge that we were there. She walked over, threw the menus on the table, and walked away. The prices for the sushi were expensive and the«waitress» didn’t offer us anything to drink. We walked out before the«waitress» returned to pick up our order slip. This place isn’t worth your time. If I could I would give this zero stars.

With hit or miss customer service and a few overpriced menu items, I still find myself returning to Makawao Sushi. Maybe it’s because of the slim pickings that the cowboy town has to offer after dark, but I can’t deny there’s a certain charm to this sushi/ice cream bar(open ’til 9pm). The sushi is decent, and the ice cream and coffee drinks don’t disappoint(I like their iced americano on warm days). It’s BYOB, and the Rodeo General Store’s beer fridge is just a few doors down, making Makawao Sushi a convenient option for a low-key night on the town.

Despite a chilly afternoon spent at Haleakala National Park, I was in the mood for sushi when we headed back down. After searching for places on the way home, we headed to the cute town of Makawao. In addition to sushi, this rustic-looking establishment sells coffee, ice cream, sandwiches and other miscellaneous stuff. My experience with sushi in Hawaii is that it seems to be much more expensive and in general doesn’t compare to what you can get on the mainland. That held true again, although the sushi here was better than any I’ve had in Hawaii so far. Our order included some NIGIRI(salmon, scallop and yellow), rolls(SPICYTUNA, SPICYYELLOWTAIL and VEGGIEMAKI) and the AHIPOKE. And what do I mean by expensive? Well, the nigiri is around $ 5, but that’s only per piece, not for an order of two pieces. You won’t be able to eat here for less than $ 30, unless you’re leaving hungry. At least you’re supporting a small family-owned business. Closed on Tuesdays.
