Bought grocery there. The cashier kept the change without asking or saying anything. Thought this is very rude and unprofessional. Also, i got the salad trio(you got to pick 3 kinds of salad for about $ 11.) all 3 salads were wayyyyy too salty. Basically inedible. I don’t recommend this store.

During my short time here in Makawao, I decided to do some exploring. Enter the Rodeo general Store. I was thirsty enough to find this place and enter for a good deal on drinks and/or liquor. Wherever you can find them is great with me. The Rodeo general store is a rustic convenience store that almost is like a rural 7-Eleven and a Whole Foods, but very very much scaled down to the point where shopping here is what the entire community congregates daily or weekly — if you don’t want to venture out to Kihei or Kahului for stuff, if you don’t need to. The Rodeo general store is the conduit for the community of Makawao and its visitors to hang out and socialize, as well as picking up food, goodies, and supplies for the day’s activities in and around Maui. The selection here for anything you need is kind of limited, although you can find your assortment of fresh produce, a deli bar, and other everyday items you need to enjoy and thrive on Maui. The prices are higher here, but what can you expect but just because you’re in a small town. It beats having to take time to drive out of town to find what you need. The Rodeo general store is located at 3661 Baldwin avenue in historic Makawao. They have an ATM machine at the entrance of the store, But they accept major credit cards so that’s always a good thing. The only problem I see with coming here is the parking. Best bet is to come here in the mornings or better yet, find parking in nearby residential areas. Doug general store is it that big so you could actually get around and see everything within maybe 15 to 20 minutes. The pretty good thing is that they specialize in local produce, as well as stocking liquors and wine for those who love the drink. Having eaten already at the Makawao garden café earlier in the day, I decided to spring for water and some liquor for later. Their selection of wines we’re pretty extensive and random, as well as selections relating to vegetarianism for in the deli. I think they do poke too, although I’m not too sure on that. I would definitely recommend coming here, just to check things out if you were in the neighborhood visiting or adventuring. Either option will get you in here, providing that your sense of discovery and excitement to do something new is virtually intact and eager to go for it. They function fine as a small but palatable 7-Eleven in the heart of Makawao, so it’s easy enough to buy essential goodies like water and food just to keep you hanging around the town and enjoy what upcountry Maui has to offer. The service here is nothing short of great. Friendly and positive service with the 100% tinge of the alpha spirit can be felt here daily. A smile can go along way to brighten someone’s day and it certainly did mine. The overall experience here at the Rodeo general store can be described as very good, but at the same time average as well. Strolling through the aisles seemed kind of blissful when trying to find what I was looking for. I have saw maybe a few local people as well as a couple of mainland tourists in the store with me that morning. It’s a community store that has a lot of heart. I do love vacationing off Oahu, wherever that maybe. Give yourself some time off the beaten path, if you need to stop and shop while in Makawao. 4 stars. Support local! B+

This is the best place for sandwiches in Makawao. You can pick up one of their pre-made sandwiches or have one custom made, either way, it won’t take long. Service is usually quick. Sandwiches are made with fresh, quality ingredients and are ample enough for the heartiest appetites. There are plenty of vegetarian options too. Along with sandwiches, you can get baked goods, coffee, smoothies or pick up a piece of fruit as a side. Prices are typical for upcountry and the quality of the ingredients! It’s strictly take out, so I like to head to the park and make a picnic out of it!

Honestly, the service here was kind of rude, just a bunch of 20-something disaffected white kids acting aloof. The poke was OK, but the service made me want to GTFO asap.

Sandwiches looked good but we couldn’t get one the person at the counter was very rude and served everyone else before us although we had been there for a bit. Very snooty and unfriendly not what you’d expect.

Actual general general store in Makawao town has lots of healthy food choices, fair prices and kind staff that t have a sense of humor. During my visit i saw a Do not feed the chickens sign at the bulletin board at the entrance because it causes a traffic jam inside the store only in Hawaii.

Great little market/bodega and deli with great choices for your carnivores and vegans alike. Tons of organic, vegan and gluten free choices. Yes refresh fruiting vegetables are pricey but organic choices are usually higher in price. Our mountain bike guided tour stopped here since their usual spot was closed due to power outage.

Best place to start a day trip to Hana! We visited the Cowboy town of Makawao early yesterday morning for picnic supplies and a donut on a stick(across the street, different review). The sammiches in the deli display immediately grabbed my attention. $ 9 for a large, freshly made sammiche that was way way better than a Subway or Togo copy and the fresh breads and meats, I had to try all four types. Luckily there were four of us but we still had them cut in half. Now the Italian, Roast Beef and Turkey club are great, but the winner hands down(hands full?) was the Chicken Pesto. Complimented our picnic with three of the salads, a kale and cabbage, a rice, and a bean… mouth-watering thinking about them again. Good beer selection and very friendly people! We may need another visit before our trip ends.

Okay — tomatoes are now a more ‘normal’ price at $ 2.99/lb and tuna salad has gone down in price to $ 8.99/lb from a ridiculous $ 12.99/lb(I mean, seriously, a can of tuna can be purchased on Maui for 90c and a big can costs even less at Costco…). I am a fan, Rodeo, but us locals are your bread and butter and we really appreciate you not being ridiculous with some of your prices!!!

New manager needed!!! I shop here constantly, I probably spend well over $ 100 a week here and have consistently over the past 3 years. The food is great, the prices are high but that’s okay as long as it continues to be good quality, I always avoid the junk that they get from Costco that they place in the hot section. Barbara is really nice and fun and Frank is a super solid guy, the deli peeps have gotten so much better in the past year, especially since the old man is gone. I am just so sick of the«too cool for school attitude» that Wes is constantly dishing out. Get over yourself brah, you work in a grocery store. If you are gonna continue to deal with customers then wipe that smug look off your face, try smile, and start treating people with respect. You are the butt of so many jokes, customers avoid the store because they are sick of you and your snotty attitude. The owners of this place must be oblivious or you must just brown nose to the max when they are around. Again, you’re not that cool Wes, get over yourself and stop looking down your nose at everyone, it’s a grocery store, not a place for you to think you’re cooler than everyone that comes in their to shop. There are several other complaints about Wes in the reviews that Unilocal has hidden as «reviews not recommended». Wake up owners, your patrons are ready for a worthy manager and sick of this guy!

Surprise to find really good gelato. $ 6 for large(2 small scoops). The best unusual flavor you cannot find anywhere else is a Strawberries Guava.

I don’t know what that guy who gave them one star was about. They have some of the friendliest employees I’ve ever encountered. The turkey club sandwich was stellar, and the rest of the food looked just as good.

My dad and I were on our way from Waianapanapa near Hana to the top of Haleakala one morning to start our three day hike around the crater. It was still early when we got to Makawao and almost everything was still closed(except the bakery but I can’t eat wheat). We had almost given up when we passed by the general store and realized there was a deli inside. I got a small spinach and almond salad which had a great dressing on it and my dad got one of their ham sandwiches which he raved about for the next three days as we trekked around the alpine desert. Great place to stop for something quick and tasty in Makawao

I dropped by to pick up sandwiches before going up Haleakala. There was a variety of sandwiches and the deli as well as assorted rice box lunches. I opted for the Classic Italian on ciabatta. With several kinds if meat, there were sprouts, tomato, roasted peppers and red onions. Instead of mayonnaise, I had pesto which I thought would better survive the drive. The sandwich was delicious, although I realized it was a bit more than I really needed. There were various canned sodas and drinks on the back wall. The staff was super friendly.

If you’re staying in Makawao, or are just passing through and need a quick bite to eat, this place has you covered! After going to the nearby superette for food one night and feeling a little at a loss with what to pick up from there, my husband and I found ourselves much more satisfied the next day once we found the Rodeo General Store. They offer a variety of tasty and fairly healthy snack and food offerings, as well as a fresh deli counter where you can order custom made sandwiches. I ended up picking up a Chipotle BBQ chicken wrap while there. And after a day full of hiking, I can say it really hit the spot! We also picked up a chocolate raspberry tapioca pudding to enjoy for dessert, which was delicious. This store also gets bonus points for staying open later than any other business in Makawao. Considering that the next largest town is 30 minutes away, any of you late night diners or jet lagged tourists will appreciate this convenience. Definitely make this your one stop shop for food on the go while in the charming town of Makawao!

I gave it 3 tries! PAU! Tired of the rude people that work there! Ask me the same question over and over again, not just one person either. Being in the service industry you need to HIRE people that serve your quality… if they are not get RID of them. They represent YOU and your company! The cashier(HE) is the rudest of all yesterday behind the Deli and today Cashier! He should not interact with customers at all! I will NEVER go back there again!!!

I was lost in Kihei and wandered into Rodeo to look up directions on my iPad without looking too obviously lost on the side of the road. No luck since my iPad is wifi only so I shoved it back into my bag and walked back out. I got followed out by an employee who said, «Hey, hey, I saw you come into my store, shove something into your bag, and then walk out!» Eep. They thought I had shoplifted. But when I explained that it was my iPad and I was simply trying to find directions, they melted and were incredibly friendly about helping me look up where I wanted to go. While I was trying to find my way to my next destination, I bought one of their local popsicles, too. It was pretty good, kind of like a paleta you can get in Los Angeles. Thanks, Rodeo, for helping out a wayward tourist.

Cool spot to get a quick and delicious lunch/snack/dinner… think Whole Foods in a cowboy setting… Fresh produce + hot plates + packaged sandwiches + drinks and not to mention the friendly staff… Check it out if or when the tummy growls =)
