Place is spot on for breakfast, which is served all day while they are open. They have specials all the time for lunch as well. There is plenty of parking and they are located on Broadway(route 99) right next to Derek Witham Insurance Agency. The staff is very friendly and the retirees seem to really embrace this place, they know a good deal when they see one, they have been around the block a few times. The price is right, the place is clean and it has that old school feeling that i miss and love about the city of Malden. They also still have those cool place mats with the presidents on them, so why not take some little ones to this fine establishment and tell them to put there phones away, they may learn a thing of two like the old days…

Hey guys, Good luck with your restaurant search ! The Broken Yolk was a pleasant surprise; a diamond in the rough, so to speak. Service: At the time of my visit, they seemed to be a tad bit understaffed(They also had a ‘help wanted’ sign in the window). But there is something to say about the waitstaff, they were in constant motion ! They did their best, although the wait for the food was slightly longer than I’d hoped. Aesthetic: family owned, the restaurant wasn’t all that appealing. Outdated wallpaper and awkward seating were present. It felt a bit like sitting in your grandmother’s living room. Food: I saved the best for last. The food was the best part of the experience. Their corn beef hash stole the show. It was exceptionally crunchy and well-seasoned. In addition, the home fries and pancakes were also above average. I’d return in a heartbeat. All in all, unless you’re trying to impress your eating companions, this might be the place for a Sunday morning breakfast in sweats.

My overall impression of the Broken Yolk is «Meh.» No thrills, nothing special about it, pretty much standard fare breakfast food. I ordered the New Englander, which came with three watery, wimpy, poached eggs and undercooked potatoes. The bacon was well done, as I requested, but so was my mother’s «rare» steak. Apparently, if you want a medium steak here you should order it raw. Of course, perhaps my taste was altered by my dry mouth, as the waitress ignored my empty cup and filled my mother’s. The Broken Yolk is okay if you need a fast, cheap fuel up and all the good places are closed.

The Broken Yolk is a real Malden hidden gem. This place is really good for breakfast and lunch. The waitstaff there has always been incredibly nice to our table; they’re always moving. Portion sizes are really generous. especially regarding they’re omeletts, they’re huge. Pancakes are really good too. I’ve had their banana pancakes and they’re great. I don’t think I’ve ever ordered breakfast straight off the menu. I usually get some kind of custom omelette, whatever I can think of at the moment. Try a mushroom, onion, and sausage omelette. Not on the menu. I made it up. but they’ll make it. Definitely seems to be a lot of regulars, but on the weekends it seems to be a mixed bag of regulars and families. There’s usually parking. either in there lot next to the diner or on the street. Aside from just being a breakfast spot, their lunch is really underrated… the menu seems to have everything from meatloaf to burgers and dogs to seafood. You would never think a small diner would have awesome seafood, but I’m a huge fan of their fried scallops when I have a chance to go there for lunch. After Georgio’s in Revere closed, the Yolk became my place for fried scallops. My girlfriend is also a fan of the kabob salad, which looked really good as well. I was surprised how cheap this place is, too. Even their dinners are under $ 20. Only drawback is they don’t take credit or debit cards.

First time we went there, we grabbed a few muffins and breakfast sandwiches and it was so good! Muffins are sliced and grilled with butter… So we went in a second time for a set down breakfast… eh. not good. the sausage was gross, the pancakes tasted like the batter consisted of just flour and water– tasteless. Overall completely unappetizing! Went back for the breakfast sandwiches and muffins a few weeks later tho… still good but not as good as the first time. The place is kind of dingy and the service is below average. Don’t know that I’d recommend it to anyone.

I love a good breakfast, and that you will find here! This place is always a great stop for some yummy breakfast foods! Prices are good and so is the food! I love the omelets and french toast! Coffee is good, all you can drink! Wait staff is always friendly and the cooks are always great! Parking can get tight in the mornings, but there is street parking nearby for overflow! Cash only so plan ahead!

I’ll keep this short. Not a fan of this place. Asked the waitress if the cornbeef hash was home made, she said yes. Ordered it, and it was clearly from the can. The pancakes were decent, the eggs were hot in some spots and luke warmish in others. That was kind of weird. Everything is cooked in a ton of butter, good if you love butter. Old splatter marks on the old James Dean picture next to us was unappealing too.

I tried this place one weekday morning after trying to go on a Sunday and it was too packed. The place has not been remodeled since the 18th century and they have waitresses that reflect that. I ordered a two egg breakfast with bacon and it was decent. It was nothing to write home about and they cooked my eggs wrong but it was okay. I cannot see myself going back here because other places I have been to in the area are much better.

Again, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I didn’t even realize that this place was a restaurant. It was right next door to an auto body shop and thought it was part of the shop. When I stepped in, it had a diner feel to it. There were several awards for best breakfast place 6 years running. I thought alright, a home run spot to eat. But… The menu’s were sticky and falling apart. I ordered the New England Special which consists of 3 eggs(scrambled), 3 beacon strips, 3 sausage links, home fries, and 2 buttermilk pancakes in which I substituted for white toast. Everything came out perfect except for the sausage links, they were a bit under cooked. The meal was good but the presentation for the place was a bit like a auto body shop then a breakfast spot. The waitress was a complete sweetheart.

We live nearby the Yolk and decided to forgo our usual spot to try this place. Bad decision. No one greeted us for over a minute, then a poorly groomed woman in a dirty shirt told us to sit anywhere. We took a booth, she walked over and tossed a couple menus on the table without saying anything. Then our waitress, a middle aged woman in pigtails with no front teeth came over and asked if we wanted coffee. It was then I saw that despite serving $ 17.00 meals, they accepted only cash. We gave one more look at the grubby interior and the creepy waitress and bailed. Franny’s on Lebanon is our usual joint, and it’s there we’ll keep going.

Don’t we all eat at a restaurant regularly and ask ourselves, why do I eat here? Well, this is my place. Yes, sometimes the service can be plain out awful. Yes, it sometimes takes ‘forever’ to get your food. Yes, the place can use a little clean up. AND. Yes, it does sometimes smell like mothballs! Haha Why I eat here… 1. In the Revere, Malden, Everett and Chelsea area, It is the best breakfast restaurant around; I’m not much of an IHOP fan. 2. When you order the ‘hungry man’ you do not leave a hungry man. 3. They have 2 large tables that can seat at least 8 – 10 people. 4. The food is always fresh, hot and reasonably priced. 5. The owner has home cooked meals as daily specials. On Fridays, I see the fish truck making deliveries in the morning to have fresh baked haddock for lunch. I’m not saying rush here now, I’m just saying that it definitely isn’t the worst restaurant you’ll ever eat at.

Well this is about as close as I get to giving one star… as others have stated it is dirty and lackluster… probably on a good day. I like a good dive, but this isn’t a «good» one. I had the patty melt(burger) and though I usually order them medium rare something told me to order it medium today… I wish«something» had told me to order it medium well… lol. The cole slaw looked like it had been around longer than some of the regulars. I didn’t dare taste that… It is a locals joint for sure… thank God I’m not local ;-)

My boyfriend moved to Malden recently and we decided to go out for breakfast with his roomies the morning after he moved in. They said they knew the perfect place. And to be fair they did warn me that«perfect» really meant cheap and decent. But I was craving pancakes so I didn’t really care. After finding the only open table we sat ourselves and waited for the remains of the people who had sat before to be removed. Oh yes, we sat at a dirty table… For over 10 minutes… just waiting. This completely grossed me out but I was told that if we didn’t jump on that table immediately someone else would have and we’d probably be left waiting forever. After about 15 minutes our waitress finally noticed that we had sat and came over to clear the table and bring our menus. She asked us what we’d like to drink. She had approximately 2 teeth. They were black. Ten minutes later she came back over to ask us what we’d like to drink… again — Clearly not remembering that we had already ordered. This time she brought our beverages over right away. At this point we were all ready to order. Having already decided on pancakes I quickly glanced the menu but knew that my heart was set on a small stack. As we waited for our food I took a look around the place. It was small– only about 10 tables and most of them were occupied by old folks. It was dirty. So dirty in fact that I drank my coffee through a straw out of fear of what I might catch from actually putting my mouth on the cup. Seriously, it was skeevy. When our food finally arrived it wasn’t bad. No one died from food poisoning and the check was teeny tiny considering we ordered for 4 people. I would like to say that I’ll never return here but that’s probably not true. Oh well.

It’s a local’s place, filled with so many dinosaurs it was like Jurassic Park. Not a «homey» place, especially with the peeling wallpaper, but they had good classic rock playing over the radio. The food is cheap enough and was quick to come… sat down as soon as i got in the restaurant. The waitress isn’t very chatty, but that could be your thing.(looks like she could use some of her morning brew herself… that stuff could take the rust off of cars.)

My husband and I went here once, in a search for a new breakfast place, and we will not be returning. For breakfast, in a non-filled restaurant, we were there for over an hour. The waitress was yelling at the staff in the back loudly enough for us to hear it and for the noise to be annoying. The food was average, but nothing special. The prices were average as well. There are so many other breakfast places conveniently located to Broken Yolk, you might try to find another.

I fully agree with Julie on this one. This place sucks. I ate there once and found it dirty, dingy, slow service and boring and crappy menu. Food sub-par.

I went there on Sunday morning not knowing what to expect. Was surprised that the food was good. Good size portions and reasonably priced food. This is a very Towny place ;-). It’s not a place that makes home made muffins or scones or fancy stuff. If you want great eggs or pancakes for breakfast worth a trip.
