After a particularly nasty storm, one of our great old strong maple trees decided to split in half, narrowly missing houses and only denting one roof. Thank goodness! A tree service came out and removed the tree, but left this very large(we’re talking 4′ across) complex stump spanning two yards and partially embedded in a fence. Now, having been a previous resident of hurricane alley, I have had many stumps removed by many different ‘professionals’ — and I use that term liberally — over the years. Some did an OK job and some did what I previously thought of as a ‘good job’. What I learned was that it is important to get the major underground roots drilled out otherwise they a) become a conduit for critters and b) later, your yard falls in and you get a ditch or rut. Now that we’re in PA, I had to think: What to do? On the recommendation of a colleague, we called Mr. Stump, who is really a very knowledgeable friendly man named Chris. Mr. Stump came out, looked over the stump, looked over some smaller old stumps, did a fantastic, super thorough job grinding everything out and cheerfully billed me a very reasonable amount. Wow. He really is all about stumps! Hands down the most thorough, professional job I’ve had done. Basically redefined what a really good stump grind is. If you’ve got a stump, I’d definitely say call Mr. Stump. Just don’t call him if you’re stumped for an answer in Trivial Pursuit. No, I could not resist that.
