I have so many mixed feelings about the Save-A-Lot brand(see my review of the Hartford/Frog Hollow Save-A-Lot for details), but this Save-A-Lot in particular is really something. I had visited this store a handful of times earlier this year, with no specific feelings towards or against it, but it was my «Thanksgiving incident» that ignited a firestorm of emotions towards this place. Here’s the context: I visited this store on Thanksgiving Day at around 1:00pm to pick up supplies for a Thanksgiving dish I was making. Unfortunately, I lost my receipt, but I remembered very clearly what I purchased. A couple of days later I checked my online credit card account, and saw that I was charged more than $ 25 over what I actually purchased. I called the store manager with the hope that he could search the store’s computer records to see where the nearly $ 40 charge came from(i.e. look up what products made up that $ 40 charge). However, even after explaining to the store manager my situation — and providing as much information as I could, including describing the clerk who completed my grocery checkout — the manager refused to help me out, saying things like, «I don’t even know anything about you, so I have no reason to refund you $ 20», along with other dismissive statements. I’ll be honest: Without a receipt, I was certainly aware that I could face pushback on questions about getting a refund. However, what I was NOT expecting was being treated like a criminal trying to scam the store. As usual in these circumstances, I reached out to corporate for assistance, first through the Save-A-Lot Facebook page(Thursday afternoon) and then through email(Friday morning). By Sunday afternoon, the store manager(using quite a different tone with me) called me on my cell phone and noted that the store owed me a refund. An apology was notably absent. I went into the store to meet the manager, only to learn the manager had left for the day. I met with the assistant manager instead, who was kind enough to refund me the money and explain the situation. It turns out the clerk who completed my grocery checkout got distracted and accidentally put part of the transaction of the people in line behind me on my credit card. They were able to verify this using computer records and the security camera. Looking back on the incident, I am thankful for Save-A-Lot corporate’s willingness to follow-up so quickly, even on the weekend. I am thankful for the assistant manager, who was patient with me and kindly explained the mishap in its entirety. I forgive the clerk for making an honest mistake(and empathize with the fact that he was reprimanded for the issue I brought up). And while I am certainly forgiving of the store manager for his behavior towards me, I can’t help but feel irked that he felt no need to offer an apology. Oh well. I just hope he treats others with more respect.
