It doesn’t look like much but looks are deceiving. Behind the yellow awning is a small shop with generous portions of Richardson’s Ice Cream from MA, a nice array of made on the premises pastries and the most enjoyable and attentive proprietor/pastry chef. We arrived after a visit to the nearby Currier Museum of Art with one member of our party with diet restrictions. He thought he found his pastry but upon cutting into it realized there was an ingredient off limits. The owner helped him choose a pastry or two that was allowed and insisted he share the original pastry with one of the others in the group and made the new selections on the house. What a breath of fresh air. We will be back but not before calling ahead to place an order for a freshly made pie available on Thursdays. Only downside is the parking situation but worth the scramble for spots.

With all the new bakeries and pastry shops opening on Elm, do yourself a favor and try this little pastry and ice cream shop off the main drag. The small ice cream cones are big and inexpensive, and the pastries — all made by the owner on site — are amazing and also inexpensive. Very good value and friendly service. I like spending my money in locally owned an operated shops. This is a gem.

This tiny ice cream shop with a bright yellow awning is only half a block from my house. It’s clean and well air conditioned, with a few inviting tables, each stocked with the latest issue of The Hippo. The ice cream is not the best I’ve ever had, but it’s very good. Servings are large. A «Kiddie» size is one large scoop, and it’s only $ 2. The Small is $ 2.75 and it’s perfect if you’re craving a lot of ice cream. I’m assuming Medium and Large are more well-suited for sharing. The Coffee Kahlua Brownie is tasty, with soft and fresh brownie chunks. I haven’t tried anything yet from the pastry counter, but the woman who is always there(I’m guessing owner) told us she makes everything herself. The counter is stocked with beautiful cream puffs, eclairs, cheesecakes and other cakes, baklava, and more. They also have cheap hot dogs, coffee/iced coffee, sundaes and banana splits. The iced coffee is mediocre. Service is very friendly. Cash only. I’m guessing they get a lot of business from the after-school crowd, being right across the street from the high school.

This neighborhood ice cream parlor is located directly across the street from Central High School, next to Domino’s Pizza. The parking situation here(on street) is very limited and can be tricky since parking is restricted during school hours. I ended up parking down the street and walking about a block to Sunshine Scoops. Sunshine Scoops offers around 20 flavors of hard ice cream & frozen yogurts/sorbets, cones, cups, waffle cones, sundaes, banana splits, floats, frappes, freezes, and ice cream sodas. Besides, hot dogs, chips, soda, and small baked goods are also offered. The prices are reasonable, cones/cups $ 2-$ 3.50, sundaes $ 3.75-$ 4.50, frozen drinks $ 3-$ 4, and hot dogs $ 1.85, before meals tax. Upon entering, climb up a few steps past a few small tables to the counter in the back. After seeing an ad in the local paper, I stopped in here recently to cool off from the scorching 95 degrees in the summer heat, dressed in my work clothes down to my feet. I ordered a Brownie Sundae($ 3.95 plus tax) with coffee Kahlua brownie ice cream and I decided to eat my snack inside this air conditioned parlor. This sundae was packed in a small cup and topped with hot fudge, whipped cream, crushed nuts(messy) and cherry on top. The brownies at the bottom were soft and chocolatey. The round scoop of ice cream was nice and cold with chunks of brownie and a good coffee flavor. The sundae was a modest size at a good price, which was pretty good sweet and cold treat to beat the heat outside. The service was friendly. CASHONLY (3.33÷5.00STARS) overall
