Steiner’s Pastry Shop

My husband and I went in to this bakery for the first time at about 5:20pm yesterday, Friday night, to grab some dessert. The lone woman behind the counter showed quite an attitude from the moment we began to order. She was clearly perturbed that we were staying to eat our carrot cake, perturbed when we couldn’t locate where the plastic cutlery was (which was because of her inaccurate directions), and was unhelpful when my husband looked for a garbage can which was apparently hidden inside cabinets. She saw him with the trash in his hand and offered no help. When we couldn’t see any place to throw out our garbage, we concluded that she must have moved the can to empty it since she was preparing to close. So we left our trash on the table. I said thank you as we were walking toward the door and she came out to our table saying angrily and sarcastically, «I’ll clean up your garbage. That’s right, leave it for me.» We said we didn’t know where the garbage can was and she snapped at us, pointing to the cabinetry. How were we supposed to know that you have to open the cabinet to find it? Couldn’t she have nicely shown us where the cutlery and garbage can were to begin with since it was obvious we had never been there before? Also, as she consolidated the leftover pastries to store overnight, she used her bare hand to move every pastry. Very unappetizing and unhygienic. The carrot cake was stale but still had a nice taste which is why I’m giving a star. Otherwise, I would have given none. As I said to the woman, I’m sorry if she was having a bad day but her attitude and demeanor were unacceptable. We won’t return.

Such a great bakery. Everything is clean and my order us always right. Always love their food.

Popped in after going to the Apple store up the road as I’d heard good things about the doughnuts. I got there right before closing but the guy behind the counter — I assume Mr Steiner, who was an absolute sweetheart I might add — had no problem going back to the trays he’d already put away to show me what was left.
The buttermilk doughnuts were good enough that I will certainly be back, at an earlier hour, to try them and other flavors when they are at their freshest.
The black and white cookie and something called a «porkchop» were also great.

If this place were closer to Manhattan they’d have a line out the door for their jelly donuts. Everything about them is perfect, they’re no nonsense classic-​ness, their clean flavor and light texture, even the amount of jelly is perfect.
I also got the meltaway cake (coffee cake/​danish) which was also great. Definitely flatter than I’m used to, but focuses on the best parts of that type of cake which are the bottom crust, the crumb topping, the glaze, and a bit of cakeyness in between.

The melts ways and a pastry called pork chop, are stand outs. Also the babka .Mr Steiner is great baker.

I’ve been shopping here for 20 years and I have gotten to know Mr. Steiner. He is a meticulous baker, scrupulously clean and lots of variety.
Get a meltaway. It’s the shop’s specialty, good with coffee or tea. Bread’s always good as are the rolls, cookies and cakes. Only thing I don’t buy are croissants. Not bad, I just don’t dig his. Jelly donuts make up for that.

Everything is delicious. The Meltaway’s, miniature cookies, and jelly donuts can’t be beat.

I wish I can give it zero stars. I went in this passed Saturday and asked the counter woman to recommend the freshest cake for a dinner party I was giving that evening. She pointed to a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I also purchased 3 rolls. For a total of over $ 26. The cake was so stale and hard that I had a hard time cutting into it. Never again. I will go there only to request my money back. This shop should just lock it up and walk away. Such a shame

Delicious pastries all around! Everything is so yummy… I always try to stop by at least once a Sunday. The shortbread is delicious and the chocolate chip cookies are to die for. Highly recommend you stop by and give it a try.

Came here with my dad on Saturday (sadly no Valentine this year as me and the bf broke up) and picked out two adorable heart shaped Linzer tarts for my mom. I got one for myself and I ate it later.
It was very yummy, and had a nice shortbread crust with delicious raspberry jam in between. Very nice indeed.
