Menno House

My small business brings me to NY annually and after 10 years staying at Hotel Wolcott in Midtown (a very good deal) I tried Menno House in 2014. It’s different from a regular hotel. The clean bathroom is shared by guests in 5 rooms. I very much appreciated the small guest fridge and use of the kitchen (available when residents are not around). The best part of Menno House is the location. Close to Greenwich Village, Union Square and the Lower East Side, it’s walkable and residential. Not touristy. I walked to two concerts at Rockwood Music Hall and Poisson Rouge. There is a Trader Joe’s market and subway stop 2 blocks away. it’s a good place for travelers on a budget who want to experience Manhattan.

This was our first stay in NYC and it felt like we hit the lodging jackpot. Affordable housing in an older home on a quiet street, a peaceful back yard (who has a back yard in NYC?) in a vibrant neighborhood, located in the heart of Manhattan within walking distance to all kinds of attractions and just a few blocks from the subway if you want to speed up your travel time.
We met a few of the other long-​term residents of the guest house, all incredibly friendly, ambitious young people working at various volunteer placements in the city. Their youth and determination made me feel like much is right with the world.
Jason, the knowledgeable and friendly guest house manager, is a great resource with suggestions for places to check out that are on — or off — the beaten path. He helped acquaint us with the neighborhoods and repeatedly told me which direction was north without losing a bit of patience. :)
Great place for those looking for less hotel — more house living in the city with friendly city people.

Tranquil and fun.

This is a great rate in an awesome location. The staff was all wonderfully friendly. One bathroom for the whole house but I never ran into anyone there. I was there by myself but my room had four mattresses and could comfortably sleep several more guests. Locking door for my room. Communal kitchen with plenty of fridge space.

Great place to stay. Private (and spacious and comfortable) rooms for a great rate and in a great location. Seems like a great community!
