Sonila Beauty Box

I went back to Sonila for my annual balayage color in March, and she did not disappoint! The color came out beautifully (a few shades lighter than what I had done last year, which I loved), and she helped preserve a streak of lighter color in my hair as well. Cannot recommend her highly enough. She’s great!

I’m sorry to have to leave a single star review. I have no doubt, based on other reviews, that Sonila is a great stylist, however I had a really bad experience trying to get my hair done by her.
I purchased a Groupon to have Sonila color and cut my hair. I was unable to contact Sonila or the salon she works with. The salon’s phone number was disconnected and Sonila’s private line went to voicemail (she never returned my messages). After several days of trying to get in touch to schedule an appointment I contacted Groupon’s customer service and they got in touch with her. Sonila sent me an email to schedule an appointment, which was about 3 weeks in the future. On the day of the appointment I showed up to the salon (which was completely empty and kind of sketchy looking) and was told by the sole employee at the desk that Sonila had just had a baby and that no one else could do my hair because Sonila only works IN the salon, not FOR the salon (and therefore my Groupon wouldn’t cover the services of any other stylists… not that I actually saw any stylists). This was extremely frustrating as I had waited about a month for the appointment and desperately needed to get my hair done. In addition, I live in Brooklyn and my subway wasn’t running on the day of the appointment. I ended up spending $ 35 on a cab to get to the salon because no one bothered to call me to tell me that Sonila couldn’t keep the appointment.
So… yeah… not a happy camper. I definitely don’t recommend trying to get your hair done by Sonila.

Sonila is absolutely amazing! I will never ever go to anyone else to color my hair. She really takes her time and takes pride in her work. Thank you Sonila for saving my hair!

Sonila is incredibly professional and GREAT at what she does. I wanted something new for my brown half-​asian hair, so I got a haircut + balayage – it was the first time I had ever colored my hair. Sonila was very detailed, teaching me about the process – what to expect, how to maintain, etc. I asked a ton of questions, but she was very patient with me and understood my concerns. She took her time with my hair. Throughout the appointment many customers came in just to see Sonila – a testament to how popular and good she is!
Sonila gave me a complimentary conditioning treatment as I was concerned about the health of my hair. I left happy, but still a bit nervous about how the hair would look in the sunlight since highlighting in general is so new to me. Despite getting tons of compliments from friends, I felt like I wanted to go back to see Sonila and get an additional tone to my hair in order to tone down the highlights a bit (to be fair, the lights in my room are incredibly fluorescent, which probably impacted my opinion). Sonila was very responsive to my concerns and she let me come in for a complimentary toning. I wanted to tip her because she was so nice, empathetic, and gave me EXACTLY what I had hoped for with my hair – but she told me that she just wanted me to be happy and wouldn’t accept a tip. I couldn’t believe it! Sonila is a true angel.
I am the sort of person who always buys haircuts on Groupon, because I just can’t justify the price of a haircut in NYC (I’m from California, and my mom used to cut my hair!). But given how wonderful Sonila was as a person and hairstylist, as well as the NUMEROUS compliments I have received, I will definitely return to her and pay full price. I trust her. I really can’t recommend Sonila enough.

This salon used to be called Alma G before another stylist in the salon took it over (probably because there were so many negative reviews on Unilocal). Alma still works there and if you go to her beware of hidden charges and be forewarned the prices listed on M Studio’s Website do not reflect what Alma charges. (M Studio haircut = $ 70, Alma haircut = $ 260!!!)
I had Alma do my hair extensions for a little over a year, she did a great job but it always ended up costing hundreds of dollars more once I got to the register. I was initially quoted «not more than 2k» for hair extensions. But then tack on $ 100 to remove the last set, add on $ 260 to cut them (how is this not included? You can’t put them in and NOT cut them!!), $ 50 for an oil treatment that I didn’t ask for and then she is really pushy about buying products… I never left there without spending 3k, a thousand dollars more than what I was initially quoted. Fine. At the time I had the money and I loved my hair so I didn’t complain.
The greediness didn’t bother me until I went to Alma and said I couldn’t afford extensions anymore and that I had to have her take them out. I was told there’s a $ 100 removal fee. After she removed them she washed my hair, gave me an oil treatment that I didn’t ask for and trimmed the ends a little to even out the shape of my natural hair which I assumed was a courtesy since I didn’t ask for a cut.
I went in expecting to pay $ 100. $ 100 removal+ $ 260 haircut + $ 50 oil treatment = $ 410 + 15% tip. $ 470.
I paid $ 12,000 in hair services to Alma over the course of a year, when I came to her and said I needed to cut back on expenses, I was surprised that a $ 100 appointment turned into almost a $ 500 one. My girl in LA did my extensions for 3 years, she never charged me for a cut after removing my extensions, she never charged me an additional fee to cut the extensions either.
Very greedy, I won’t go back. Despite having a slightly abrasive personality Alma is a cool chick and talented but I won’t go back.

Love Sonila! She is the best hairdresser I’ve ever had. She’s so precise. She knows exactly what kind of cut you need, even when you don’t know it yourself! She’s fast, efficient and you still get the best cut and blowdry! The staff are so personable, and the studio space is tastefully minimal in it’s design. Great place!

I love Sonila so much!!! Not only does the girl know how to handle hair, she’s also so sweet and considerate, not to mention cute as a button :). I used to carry a «wanna look like this» picture before I met her… no need for it anymore, she gets me, she gets my hair, I can’t recommend her enough.

This salon was taken over by Marcus and his Albanian ladies. They are wonderful! Considerate, meticulous, polite, and affordable.
Highly recommended!
