Apparently, people forgot that sushi is not the only way to enjoy seafood. Too bad, because this was a fresh take on East Coast style. Here’s hoping the reformulation of a new concept for this space includes the crisp and tender clam strips, or calamari fritti of equivalent tenderness. Cheers!

Was looking for somewhere to grab a drink/bite between drop offs at the airport. Were on our way to C&O Trattoria when I remembered this place. It was a Sunday early evening and the place was empty. It’s a cute little bar though with a nice patio area where we would have sat if it was a warmer evening. We happened to arrive during happy hour when they have wine/beer deals and smaller orders of some of the menu items on sale too. The house wine was not great at all. The Sauvignon Blanc was very vinegary tasting and the Merlot Sangiovese blend was ok but not great. I had looked at their full wine list as the red had not sounded appealing to me in the first place. However, their wine list is very small and they didn’t have the Malbec I wanted. We got a few small plates to share for food. The fried clams, fries, cod chowder, shrimp cocktail, and clam linguine. Shrimp cocktail: fresh shrimp, but the cocktail sauce is what makes this dish. They put Sriracha in it and it is delicious. Fried clams: these are pretty good, but if you order them ask for them with the cocktail sauce from the shrimp cocktail, much better than the tartar sauce they come with. Fries: the best thing at the table, I would come back just for a giant basket of these! Cod chowder: way too much bacon in this. It really overpowered the whole thing and made it very salty and bacon was chewy and big. They should have rendered the bacon and removed it just to leave the flavor but no actual bacon pieces in it. Linguine with clams: nice dish with lots of clams in it, but too much lemon. We saw that there was a sticky toffee pudding on the menu for dessert and being English felt like we had to order it. So glad we did. It was delicious. Very well done. Definitely get this if you come here. We may come back here if we happen to be in the area, but wouldn’t make a specific trip here. Would probably go to C&O if we are looking for something close to the airport next time.

They just don’t give a shit here. So, I went to Catch & Release after reading about a great Oyster Po-Boy here, probably on Eater. We went for lunch on a Saturday. There was no Po-boy on the menu… just a bunch of breakfasty type things. eggs. Hello, seafood place? Branzino for two? No thanks. So I order the French Toast. What came out was a pile of dry bread with a little apple compote. It tasted like stale bread dipped in egg for 5 seconds, grilled and put on the plate. The worst. No flavor at all and freakin dry. Not decadent in any way. Our waitress and for that matter everyone working couldn’t have cared less if we were happy or not. Our waitress saw my plate was left mostly untouched but didn’t ask how it was or if there was anything wrong. The runner or manager was on her iPhone alot and clearly disinterested. Did not seem managed in any way. Oh, and the place was dead. PERFECT example of why an 18% mandatory Service Charge is a bad idea. The staff knew they were getting their tip and clearly service was not on their mind. And for those reading this that think I am just angry about the Service Charge. Wrong. That was the least of this place’s problems but I do think it adds to it. This place makes me sad. What a shame. What a waste of money.

The only thing I really liked about Catch & Release were their cocktails, oysters, and the convenience of it being right across from my place. The interior is nice and spacious with vibrant red chairs. They have an open kitchen and a bar area to grab drinks. We strolled in on a Wednesday night without a reservation and had no difficulty getting a table. They do offer a happy hour from 4 – 6PM; unfortunately, we did miss that. FOOD: I highly suggest you get their oysters. They don’t have an array of oysters sadly. We got a dozen and they were the highlight of the night. BUT they didn’t come with any horseradish?! I asked our server to bring some to the table and she forgot… We shared the clam chowder, salmon, little neck clams, and a side of french fries. The clam chowder was just alright. The broth was a lot thinner and lighter than most chowders. The one thing that I didn’t like about the chowder was the fact that it was pretty sweet. Salmon was decent. It came on a bed of what seemed like risotto? Crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It was the perfect salmon pink color in the middle. Both the clams and the french fries were so salty. I love french fries. But their french fries were awful. They were fried for too long and over seasoned. I couldn’t eat more than a few because it made my mouth so dry lol. The broth in the clams were overly seasoned as well. It was accompanied with a few pieces of rustic bread which is sad to say but better than the broth/clams. SERVICE: Our server was really nice but she just wasn’t very attentive. For a restaurant that wasn’t so busy, I was a little confused why there was a lack of hospitality/service? And on top of that, they added their own 18% gratuity. I wish they mentioned that on their menu because it came as a shock when the bill came to the table. Over priced for sure.

It’s rare for me to give poor reviews and the 2 stars really just goes out to the over pried small portions dishes this place offers. However the service was so friendly and the ambiance is comfortable. Our first question to our server was how big the portions were and the reply was its fairly big actually. We got excited since we were eyeing the prices. We had oysters, lobster roll, farm salad, and Dorade fish. The oysters were delicious and fresh. The lobster roll was $ 24 dollars for a such a small sandwich The farm salad, geez for like $ 14 it was smaller than a side salad, it took 4 bites to finish. The fish was small but enough for one person and was fairly good. My take, go to Catch and Release for their service, ambiance and their drink list. Skip the food.

Los Angeles is a food mecca comprising of many chefs and restaurants with a cult-like following. Catch & Release’s chef fits the bill with head chef Jason Neroni being the former chef of famed Venice spot Superba Snack Bar. Sadly, Catch & Release is a failed attempt to replicate the success found at Superba. While the restaurant takes a stab at replicating East Coast summer seafood fare, it misses the mark miserably. Part of the appeal of the East Coast-style is the no frills attitude that accompanies the coastal experience. At Catch & Release, despite being less than a mile from the Pacific waters, nothing feels casual nor coastal. The space itself is nice, including an outdoor patio and a spacious view of the kitchen, which adds a bit of a nice personal touch(a growing trend amongst restaurants these days). We came for lunch during Dine LA. After careful research and menu exploration, we settled on Catch & Release due to its proximity to our house, desire to try it, and selected menu items that were to be included on the Dine LA menu. Unfortunately, on arrival, we found that they had pulled a bait and switch on the menu options, removing some, including the main ones that we wanted. The bait and switch began the day on the wrong foot, and even after asking if they could honor their originally posted options as they should, they said they were unable to. Instead of the clam strip appetizers, I opted for the Watermelon Gazpacho. Sadly, it was pretty much inedible, with a pure liquid texture and overwhelming watermelon taste. I ended up only having a couple bites. The salad that my girlfriend ordered was slightly better, but not by much. None of the ingredients came together and I felt I would have been better off just making a salad at home. For the main dish, I went with the Soft Shell Crab Sandwich. Once again, the ingredients did not work together really at all, and the crab just felt mushy, with each bite hoping I was closer to the end. The fries were decent at least, pretty much the lone bright spot of the day(and the burger looked good but I won’t be back to try). After seeing how much we disliked the gazpacho(to be honest the worst I’ve had to date) I was hoping when the waiter removed it without really asking that he would remove it from the bill or offer to replace it with something else. However, as I should have expected nothing was done to alleviate the awful appetizers. Despite high hopes, Catch & Release turned out to be about as bad as it gets. Add to that the high prices for extremely mediocre food and there is no way I will be coming back here. They did have my favorite oysters, Naked Cowboys, but at a price considerably more than at the Water Grill, which I still hold as the best seafood spot in town.

Despite relatively poor reviews here, I decided to give it a try. Based on my experience today, I think it will close down pretty soon. I ordered the $ 22 lobster roll and took me 4 bites to finish. I only tasted saltines and nothing else. My server Andrew never filled up my water glass once, and when I left, the front door guy saw me as an invisible man. It added 18% tips to the bill automatically, but the service I received deserves 5 the most.

Not sure why there are so many negative reviews, maybe they are still working out the kinks of being a new restaurant? Our server was great and prompt. Ordered the mussels which were absolutely lovely. My only complaint is they brought out one small slice of bread(to share)! All that lovely coconut sauce + 1 slice of bread? Sheesh. Next up was the lobster which was cooked perfectly. We also ordered the bucatini that had sweet corn and crab. Not sure if I would order that again. Strangely, for being a seafood restaurant, it was their kale salad that was the star of the meal. Order it! Kale, feta, pine nuts, raisins… Nuff said. Finally, my husband(who is from New Zealand) had a good laugh when he read their menu. It said Wild Caught Barramundi from New Zealand. Not sure but last time he checked, barramundi comes from SE Asia or northern Australia… unless of course, this fish was really farmed indoors? Hmmmm.

Saturday, August 29, 2015 @ 4:10 pm… walked in after an hot afternoon of errands in the car with no AC [just went out] the host [tall guy in green pants] I’m guessing asked if I could use the restroom before sitting at the bar for HH, said sure would leave a menu and never did when I returned. Several [5] of us sat at the bar waiting to gain the attention of at least 1of the 3 bartenders working. They seemed more interested in prepping then serving, the super nice Irish couple to my left chimed in [OK shouted] could they order so I took the lead to request a menu. Checked it out and had the following items… Will add this if it wasn’t for the Irish Couple from Westchester I would not had stayed long! 3 cocktails: tequila maid, fresh lime, cucumber, & mint $ 7/each Dozen fresh Kumamoto oysters by the $ 24 [only 1 type during HH] Red Snapper [beef/pork] hot dog Parker House roll, relish, old bay fries $ 7 Tazmanian ocean trout tartare, pickled mustard, quail egg, chives, pine nuts 16 1 cocktail Surf Report, gin, cucumber, mint, fresh lime, dry vermouth, anisette & salt air $ 12 The stars were the Red Snapper hot dog & Surf Report Cocktail. When the Oysters 1st came out the waitress did not bring flatware/napkins or suggest where they were, the horseradish I had asked to have when I placed the order did not arrive and when I inquired about it she was not thrilled about doing something. Customer service truly needs to be worked on as I had mentioned above if it wasn’t for the other couple I would not had lasted. This went on throughout the entire time we were there 4:10 pm and left after 7 pm. Good luck!

This is a very cool place. Casual, clean, upbeat and open, very open. Its design is like a beach front restaurant in Cabo or Lahaina right smack dab in the in the business park section of Marina Del Rey. This atmosphere sets the tone for your dining experience. The bar makes some real creative cocktails. My wife and friends had several. I’m a traditionalist, so I ordered a gin martini with my usual preferred gin. They didn’t carry it — damn. They had these boutique gins which I don’t really like, but I was persuaded by our exceptionally nice waiter to try one of his requested gins. I begrudgingly did and it was delicious. This place is scoring points! A very nice seafood menu arrived and we all ordered some pretty darn good dishes: Grilled salmon, lobster rolls, pasta with crab, a seafood platter, peel and eat shrimp and a really good kale salad. Everything was presented well and done even better. No wonder the place was packed and buzzing. This place had everything going for it and it showed on all of the patrons faces. The bill came and it was expensive. Not sticker shock expensive, but expensive only to the point of having lobster and crab and some very nice wines included in our evening. It made sense. Catch and Release does add an 18% gratuity charge on the bill. A practice becoming more common now in establishments. No problem here. In fact, we all would have given 20% happily! The owners of Catch and Release opened this place to be enjoyed and to exsentuate the dining experience. They were completely successful.

Suzie Q’s Fun Facts: «Catch and release» is a recreational fishing method designed to avoid injury to the fish(so the fisherman doesn’t keep what he catches). This method entails catching fish with a specially-designed hook, after which the fish is thrown — hopefully, none the worse for wear — back in the water. =≅≅≅≅≅≅≅≅≅~ I’m sorry to say that if this restaurant were a fish, I’d probably throw it back. Regular readers of my reviews know that fixed gratuities bother the crap out of me. See my review for Odys & Penelope: . But the mandatory 18% gratuity didn’t even rank amongst my biggest complaints about Catch and Release. So then, what DID rank among my biggest complaints? For starters, the food was disappointing at best, and downright bad at worst. Or perhaps, to be charitable, the term should be «inconsistent.» For example, previous Unilocalers have raved about the bucatini pasta with Dungeness crab, sweet corn, garlic, and chili($ 19). But others have noted that the pasta was overcooked. In contrast, my table found the bucatini pasta to be noticeably *under*cooked… and if the pasta’s unpleasant chewiness weren’t bad enough, it came to the table ice cold. The corn-based sauce was OK, but otherwise, the dish was a total dud. Most of us took one spoonful and left the rest untouched. My dining companions and I were also unimpressed with the following dishes: — Sausalito trout, corn pudding, smoked almonds, peaches, vadouvan($ 29). Most of us took only one spoonful. One of my friends specifically remarked that while the fish itself was OK, the sauce was a little odd. I also noticed that the accompanying peach slices were unpleasantly crunchy. — I didn’t particularly like the flavor of the broth that the PEI mussels(«mustard & cider broth, herbed garlic toast 16») were sitting in. I ate literally three of them, and had no desire to eat any more. As a huge fan of steamed mussels, this was a disappointment. — HoJo style clam strips(«old bay, bread & butter tartar sauce 12») were okay, I suppose. Though the breading was dry and mealy, rather than crispy and savory. I got tired of eating them after a while. A couple of more successful dishes: — The Parker House rolls — essentially, hot fresh-baked buttery dinner rolls — were pretty good, though one was enough for me. — The crisp brussels sprouts(«& broccolini, kale pesto, parmesan 10») were one of the more popular dishes, but even so, they were a bit on the tart side… almost like they were cooked in vinegar. The portion size was admirably huge. On the positive side, the service was pretty good(possibly owing to the fact that the large restaurant was 2⁄3 empty?) and free and easy parking — under the building, or in the adjacent street-level lot — was a bonus. But: Considering the number of half-eaten, congealing dishes left on the table… and the fact that the staff didn’t even notice this, inquire about whether we liked the food, or offer to replace or comp any of these dishes… AND that we each paid a whopping $ 50 to $ 70 to eat at what amounted to an upscale-casual seafood shack: Catch and Release was an overall disappointment. We all agreed that the similarly-priced and similarly-themed Connie & Ted’s in WeHo was a MUCH better choice.(You know you’re having an underwhelming experience at a restaurant when you end the meal by reminiscing about some OTHER restaurant’s fantastic food…)

Finally got to try this place during DineLA. We came last Sunday for brunch and at 11:45am, it was close to empty. But by the time we left, the place was entirely full. I ordered the gazpacho, the lobster/crab/shrimp roll & Eton Mess. I actually liked my food but my husband said his was just meh. Maybe he didn’t order the right items. When we got the bill, I was surprised with the $ 25 upgrade charge. I asked the waiter about it and apparently, the entrée I ordered had an upgrade charge(which was the same cost as the entire meal). Thankfully, since it was their fault that they did not print that info on the menu, they took the fee off. Would come back if I were in the area. Parking is in the same building as the restaurant.

A very odd name for a seafood place. Not what I expected at these prices –a very casual overly SALTY fish & chip and oyster place on a busy, noisey street with mostly hard wooden chairs. We arrived @5pm which was too early for the Dine LA $ 50/person menu which the waiter said started at 530pm so we ordered a couple of drinks off of the HAPPYHOUR menu(4−6pm). We then noticed that the Happy Hour menu had the same things as on the Prix Fix menu that we were considering, but were at Happy Hour half price. We were also not excited about the mish mash of the DineLA course choices(cold corn soup, cold tomato broth with mussels, corn pudding with roasted peaches and trout, baked clam with lobster broth & corn again? fried fish & chips, UGH). I did not order the«Cod cream soup» because I didn’t know what was in it… dairy, salt. Overuse of salt is a sign of a poor chef according to my chef friends. However, the Cape Codder drinker I had was a 10⁄10 very nicely presented and I loved the striped red paper straw. Can’t go much wrong with that. My friend had a Tequila mint drink which he enjoyed and ordered more. We were hungry and decided to order off the Happy Hour menu– the New Zealand oysters(6) on the half shell with a vinegar dipping liquid was delicious and I don’t usually like raw oysters. Judging by other photos on here I think the one small lobster roll for $ 12 was only half the usual portion of the regular menu($ 20 – 24.) which looks like two small lobster rolls in other photos here. My one little lobster roll was mostly bun and a small mixed concoction sitting on the top opening was certainly more of a bitesize appetizer than an entrée. The french fries were piled high and LOADED with SALT. I probably should have sent them back and asked for NONSALTED fries. We were seated«outside’ close to the noisey street on hard red wooden chairs in a corner. The noise and décor were glaring. The place was pretty empty but the waiter said they had lots of reservations for later. The 18% imposed«service fee» is very unfriendly and there was a card on the table that explained that the service fee is to ensure the back staff get a fair share, but assured us that their staff are well compensated including health benefits – and that the fee was«optional» and would be taken off if the service was considered«not excellent» by calling the manager over! How presumptive! I asked the waiter how much of the 18% tip he gets and he said that he is supposed to get 14% with his paycheck at the end of the week and 3% goes to fund their health benefits and 1% to the bar and bus boys. Thats not what the table card said. The back gets 1% and we are paying for their health benefits? How many people’s health benefits do we have to pay for?! As well the waiter said the same as what the manager says in a comment to a review here that the fee was to make up for the soon to be raised minimum wage –and to provide health benefits! I would think that the prices of the menu items are high enough! It is a social custom to tip certain service sectors and we don’t mind tipping well when service is unusually exceptional but this is not a tip anymore, it is a «service FEE,» which is collected by the restauranteur. This is ridiculous! We really didn’t care for this policy. The 18% «service fee» was also added to drinks. We decided to not order anything more and to go somewhere else more comfortable. We went to the new SALT Restaurant Bar at the newly renovated Marina Del Rey Hotel for more food and drinks and enjoyed a lovely view of the boats and great comfortable décor which was much nicer. If I would recommend this Catch and Release place for anything, I would recommend it for someone who likes to eat raw oysters and drink at the bar and doesn’t care much about ambiance, décor or price gouging. Thanks for reading!

I had read about Catch and Release being a seafood restaurant open in the Marina and was interested in trying it. As much as I like Connie and Ted’s and Fishing With Dynamite, those restaurants are a bit farther away. I was surprised when my friend told me that Catch and Release was participating in dineLA so we thought it was a good chance to try it for dinner. I chose the half dozen raw oysters, the roasted trout with corn pudding and roasted peaches, and a dessert concoction with meringue, strawberries, cream, and raspberry sorbet. My friend ordered the mussels, trout, and chocolate cake with cream. The oysters were good and the mussels were plentiful. The trout wasn’t quite how we expected it to be because the online dineLA menu had said«whole» roasted trout. Instead, our fish was in pieces. The corn pudding and peaches with it added an interested taste. My dessert was pretty good, but my friend said the chocolate cake was pretty average. Looking over the regular menu, I’d probably want to come back and try other things like the fried clams or lobster roll to compare it to the ones I’ve eaten in Maine. The restaurant itself is very attractive, inviting, and cute like an upscale seafood shack with regular tables and communal benches. It’s located across the small side street from DSW on the ground level of the Stella apartments. The food was a little slow coming out although it seemed like the restaurant is still finding its way. Our server was nice and pleasant and seemed to be trying her best although she seemed to be covering many tables. Be prepared to have 18% automatically added to your bill to help cover employee wages/benefits.

The place is nice, has a good vibe and ambiance. Service was top notch but sadly the food is not. Here is a breakdown of what i tried: Appetizer: Cod Chowder: consistency was good but was way too salty. HoJo crispy clam: pretty good, nice and crispy Burrata: love the toppings, since the burrata itself was bland. I wish the had provided toast or cracker to go with it. Brussel Sprout: it was so overcooked and burnt, all we tasted was the bitter charred leaf and it was already cold by the time it came. Lobster Roll: $ 24 for such little portion! Tasted bleh, nothing special. Oysters: fresh and delicious! Took a while to came out and it was served in between appetizer and main course, which was weird. Spagheti Nero: pretty good and lnteresting. Buccatini crab: pasta was overcooked and soft, but the sauce was good. PEI mussels: HORRIBLE! It ruined the dining experience. Once we opened the lid from the pot, an overwhelming smell of «feet» came over us and no surprise, it tasted horrendous. We had to close the lid to continue eating the rest of our food. The desserts sounded appetizing but we were already put off by the smell of the mussels that we couldnt be bothered to try them.

So this place replaced the old restaurant and updated it with nautical features as it is a seafood restaurant. We read on Unilocal that it was going to be a bit pricy so we came prepared. The service is absolutely amazing! Every time we needed something, there was a server ready to come by. As appetizer, we got the lobster roll. It was delicious but a little small. We then got the sea bass and that was delicious. The bucatini dish would have been good but it wasn’t warm enough. Oysters were amazing!!! so juicy. Come with your pockets prepared. Our first«Ocean to table» and it was really good!

I had high hopes for Catch and Release. I was hoping it would be our own local Connie & Ted’s of Marina Del Rey. However the one word that describes this new restaurant is «disappointment.» More on this sentiment at the end. I was a big fan of Paiche, which was the previous concept from this restaurant group in this location. The problem with that restaurant was the menu-model of small«tapas style» dishes at high prices, with the recommendation that each person at the table order 3 or 4 dishes to share, and the resulting sticker-shock at the end of the meal. That might work with LA’s hipster scene, but it didn’t work here. So I was surprised to see that same model being used again for Catch and Release. It didn’t work for Paiche, and it’s not going to work here. I do give credit to the owners for the restaurant décor. The ambiance lets you know you’ve come for seafood. Great photos & imagery throughout, and I love the stainless steel table tops. The lighting could be a bit brighter for dinner, as I needed to use my iPhone to see the menu. And for a restaurant specializing in seafood, there really are not that many fish entrees. We started out with a couple draft beers off the drink menu. The beer was good, but really pricey for the size of the glass. Especially when you consider the Yard House is across the street, and they serve twice the size for the same price. For starters we got a half dozen Baja Shrimp Cocktail and half dozen Oysters. The shrimp came out unpeeled, so I wouldn’t recommend ordering them if you’re here on a first date. It would have been nice if this important detail had been added to the description on the menu. And at these prices, the shrimp should be served ready-to-eat. The oysters were the tiny kind, although tasty. As a side note, the menu I saw online features seafood appetizer combinations that include the shrimp, the oysters, and lobster for a package deal. However when we asked the waiter about them, he said that on this opening night they were not available(or we would have ordered it). But then later I saw another table being served that combination. When I asked the waiter why it was not offered to us, he said that it was only available to «friends on family» on this night. Not a good way to impress new customers on your opening night. Next we tried the Lobster Roll. The portion was small, appetizer size. But enough to share between 2 people. The bread was crispy and delicious, the perfect compliment to the large chunks of lobster. This was one of the highlights of the meal. We also ordered a bowl of the Cod Chowder to share. This was a good dish, but very rich and buttery — and a little salty. Half a bowl was plenty for one person. The flavor was tasty, and there was plenty of fish in the chowder. The large croutons could have been served on the side rather than floated on top. Our next dish was the Ricotta Uni Dumplings. Not at all what I expected. A better description is Gnocchi. I’m guessing that the ricotta and uni is all mixed into the dough, because I wasn’t getting much flavor of either. Very subtle uni, and really no ricotta at all. The sauce and bacon that accompany the gnocchi are a savory addition. The portion is small for the price. Our final entrée was the Seared Scallops with Foie Gras and Miso. The scallops were quite large and seared perfectly, but the 1 small piece of foie gras was not enough to balance the 3 large scallops. The flavor of the dish was very good, though the thick kale sauce should be used sparingly. The dessert menu was sparse, with only 5 options — and 2 were not available. And most of the items had funky names that needed explanation, which we had to ask for.(Note to wait staff: exceptional service means offering to explain things without being asked) We opted for something called Whoopi pie, which is two soft gingerbread cookies with ice cream between them, served over a delicious lemon curd and fresh blueberries. This dish was surprisingly very good, and all the flavors really worked well together. When the check arrived we noticed a «20% Admin Charge» had been added. We were told it’s basically a gratuity that covers the wait staff and back-of-house staff. Words cannot explain the amount of disappointment a customer feels when forced to pay a 20% gratuity with no mention of it anywhere until the check arrives. Finally, the ultimate disappointment of the evening was the behavior of one of the chefs. When a restaurant has an open kitchen, the staff needs to be aware that everyone can see them, all the time. Chefs can’t do things like lick a sauce spoon, then use it to sauce the next dish being served. And they certainly can’t stick their finger in a customer’s dish and lick it before the food is plated and served. Yet this was happening. And even when we notified the manager, and got a sincere apology, it continued to happen again and again. Very disappointing.
