This place is AMAZING! I’ve never liked salmon, in a restaurant, more than my husband’s salmon. I had the best meal ever here. Great food, service, and atmosphere!

First time at the vierling surprisingly. I should have visited sooner! Nice staff, good drinks and food! Quality beer and wine, even the«house» wine was pretty good. We enjoyed the bruschetta. Hope to visit again next time we are in the area.

What self-respecting restaurateur uses frozen hamburgers? How lazy. But this joint goes through all the work to make beer, but can’t make a damn hamburger. Service perfectly average. Balance of menu and items our group of 4 ordered also perfectly average. Even the«homemade» cole slaw was crap– no sauce on the slaw. Like eating rabbit food. I could have easily got more taste and flavor from the rotisserie at 7 – 11. Seriously. Don’t waste your time or money. Save money and get more quality and flavor at the local 7 – 11.

I’m giving it to stars because of the convenient location by the water. However, the owner is an absolute snob and kiss ass to doctors, lawyers and people who he feels have a high status in the community. A friend and I walked in and asked for a table at the window, both of which were open at the time. The owner replied«those tables are reserved for customers«and I said«what do you think we are? I found out from staff that he only seats certain people he knows at those tables. Mainly people that appear to have a very high income. Total snobbery. Don’t believe me? Whenever you call for a reservation or walk in, always ask for one of the window seats and see what they say. Just keep doing it.

Dinner menu is amazing. I’ve been three a couple of times the Greek salad is fantastic(and big) also the penini(sp?) Was probably the best sandwich I had ever eaten. I only have it for stars because lunch is not as good. A got a gyro sandwich and it was dry and bland. Who doesn’t put feta on a gyro?

When I first walked in didn’t know who was going to seat me … wanted a spot in the back so I could see the view told me he didn’t have anything available or that if I waited about 5 – 10 minutes he would have so I sat in the front Waitress was attentive… and so were the NATS in my beer and all over my food and the worst thing was a nice thick black HAIR in my salad … overall I dont think I’d go back

I’m only giving one star since that is the lowest I can go. We went waited a little while for waitress. Since we had never been to this area before my husband asked about the fish. Our waitress was very rude and stated she didn’t have time for questions she’d come back when we made up our mind. Needless to say we got up and left!

Great home-brewed beer, fantastic salted white fish(they salt their own fish in a structure nearby), good service and good location. The place looks and feels dated, but I guess that is part of its charm and why visitors find it such an interesting place to stop and dine.

I have never been so humiliated at a restaurant in my life. My gf and I waited over an hour for a seat on a busy night in August. When we were eventually given a table we watched two other tables get service(water and drinks) while we were given no service. After 15 minutes I approached the man who sat us to inquire. He erupted at me and told us to leave creating a huge scene. This continued as we left the restaurant. I have frequented this restaurant in the past. I will never go back again. I feel sick to my stomach based on how we were treated. I’ve worked in restaurants for years, being busy is not an excuse for abusing customers. We deserved better.

This is a great place to stop for a beer and a meal. The atmosphere is great, staff always friendly. The food is a little on the pricey side, but always good. The beer is what I come for, I love the Blueberry Wheat Ale.

Get the beer sampler. The blueberry beer is good/interesting. My nachos were over cooked and just had cheese on the top layer. After that it was basically chips. Atmosphere was casual and fun.

Very pleasant atmosphere with a old school trueness. The virility of an establishment can be seen in this throw back to the good days with its tastefully decorated long interior and gorgeous bay view. I quickly decided for fish and chips and the waitress helpfully suggested the Milkshake Stout. The batter on the fish was crisp and the entire meal was fresh. The pairing of the stout was on point and showed the deep knowledge of fine beer pairing. I will recommend going for lunch.

When you have some free time in Marquette, sit by the window and order a blueberry beer here. Enjoy!

Whoever gives this place less than 5 stars will never find the«right» restaurant. They catch their own fish right off Lake Superior, which is within a baseball throws distance and they brew their own beer. I haven’t seen a livelier bunch of folks on a Monday night since the Redskins beat the Giants several years ago. The beer is fantastic but the Lake Superior Whitefish is the reason you go — grilled however you like it just know that it is as fresh as they come.

Went here for a celebration dinner with a large group. The restaurant was very accommodating to our group on a very busy weekend. There were thirteen of us in our group and the service was very friendly and they did not rush us, which was really nice. The seem to be known for their blueberry beer but we preferred the peach beer instead. It was fuller of flavor. We couldn’t taste much blueberry in the blueberry beer, The food, as a general rule, was pretty average. We ordered four appetizers, the bruschetta, the nachos, the smoked whitefish and the spinach artichoke dip. The dip was probably the best but not inspired. Our table ordered entrees that ranged from whitefish and chicken to steak, One of the steaks had to be sent back because it was so poorly cooked. I had the whitefish picatta but it was only okay. There didn’t seem to be much flavor and the fish was overcooked and dried out for my taste. We also had a selection of desserts. The chocolate peanut butter pie was amazing and really the standout of the desserts,

I was a little nervous at first to come and dine here because of some of the reviews written lately. However we took the chance and made our way over for dinner. The atmosphere is beautiful! It reminds of the quaint little bars you’ll find over in Ireland. We were seated immediately, being lead to a beautiful booth surrounded by hanging plants and cozy lighting. We ordered the smoked whitefish as an appetizer and it was presented beautifully. The fish was complimented with a dill spread that added to the smokey flavor. After our appetizer our main meal came. My boyfriend ordered the deli salad which was loaded with deli meats and hard boiled eggs. My pesto tortellini was served with the chowder soup and bread. It was so much food for a great price. We were overall very impressed and will definitely come back! The atmosphere, servers and food were all well done.

We have visited this place twice; once during the lunch menu hours and then again for dinner this past weekend for the dinner menu since it was supposedly different from the lunch. We try to visit different restaurants in the Marquette area since we have a student at NMU, and we motel/hotel it throughout the school year to visit them. The lunch visit was ok. Sandwiches ok. We all agreed that we’d like to experience the dinner menu at another visit. All agreed that the sandwiches/lunch menu at Donckers was far superior to the lunch fare here. Dinner: Vierling hit .333. The chicken stir fry was rated fine. The chicken Picatta was rated«I’d never order this again,» and the Saturday special Prime Rib(soup) was rated blah. Chicken stiry fry: Fine. Picatta: Our eater said it had absolutely way too much oil. And over cooked. Not enjoyable. Prime Rib ‘Special’: Never seen Prime Rib served on top of a piece of Rye bread. Interesting. But, there was way too much au jus in the lipped plate, which made it hard to cut the meat without slopping over the side. I like my beef somewhat salty, so it was a surprise to me to find this dish WAY too much salty. Since the beef took up the whole plate, my veggie and wild rice side sat on a side dish, where neither of them could easily soak up any beef juices. But since it was a soup on the main plate anyways, that part sort of worked out for a slight, dry, plus. About half way through the beef, couldn’t put up with the salty/au jus/rye bread underlayment, so I moved that off to the side. The prime rib meat itself was passable. This is a promoted micro brewery. Hopefully, the brews are better than the food. All three of us were in agreement though: The two meals that we had at the NMU dining Marketplace were better than the dinner that we had here.

Overrated. While the atmosphere is cool and quaint, the food is nothing special. They made a big deal about the fries. However they are the same pre-made fries that any diner has. Same goes for the chips. What really soured it for me was our waitress. She was brusque and, for the most part, ignored us. While it was lunchtime busy, there was no need for her snappishness. Tons of people love this place. The prices reflect the atmosphere and the building, definitely not a reflection of the food.

My friend raved all day about the whitefish special — crab cake crusted whitefish; he’d had it multiple times when in Marquette. We both ordered it — he devoured his; I thought mine was disgusting and couldn’t eat more than a third. The fish was dry and overcooked, and was spread with what tasted like mostly bread stuffing. Yuck. Baked potato and green beans were delicious :-). Salad with homemade Italian Bleu Cheese dressing was okay. My husband had the Whitefish Bites as a meal. The serving was plentiful, fish was lightly coated and fried to a pleasant brown crust; he was very pleased with his meal. Fourth dining companion had the 4 oz. filet — he said it was great. Beer selections were fabulous — we got the 10 beer sampler — a deal at $ 13. Note: another friend recommended the grilled whitefish without the topping. I think it would be worth trying if there is a next time.
