Hy-Vee Food Stores

Provide quick eats/​dining and it’s very welcoming. Plus they have Starbucks! Always a + :)

Small café seating area and fewer kitchen options than I would expect at a Hy-​Vee in a town of this size.
The Starbucks has its own alcove so you can get a coffee and sit at a table there instead of in the café if you aren’t eating.
Next to a nice park if you prefer a picnic lunch to eating in the café.

In terms of options and Marshalltown this place should probably get 5 stars.
A big plus to this food store is the salad bar. In a town where healthy food is virtually absent you can come here and get good options in the salad bar. Variety of greens, fresh vegetables, lots of chopped fruit, and then some cold premade food options as well. It’s all you can eat for 8.50 if you eat there or 7.99 a lb to go (which doesn’t end up being as worth it).
Another plus to this grocery store is the beer/​wine selection in the liquor section of the store. It was impressive to see some good craft beer in this part of Iowa. There’s also a nice organic section with gluten free option.
There’s a starbucks located inside as well. Overall, this place is clean and provides a lot of options in Marshalltown.

I’m giving this place 3 stars because they provide variety for people looking for a quick bite to eat. I was in the mood for a salad, so grabbed a container and grabbed some salad with chicken, egg, olives and other veggies on top, fresh fruit, potato salad, and cole slaw. The lettuces was old and gross, the chicken tasted like rubber. Everything else tasted great. Defiantly the kind of food my grandma would eat in a nursing home. I do have to give credit to this store for having a Starbucks! That’s a huge bonus!

The prices are higher than other stores in the area (unless you are an avid ad shopper). The higher prices are defiantly worth paying as the store is always incredibly clean, the shelves are stocked, the staff is always courteous and friendly. They have a tremendous selection of food, including a separate health/​organic section. The store attracts a better clientele than one of the other super stores I have reviewed which makes shopping more enjoyable. The grilled chicken in the deli is absolutely amazing as well as their General chicken from the Chinese department. I enjoy getting freshly sliced lunch meat from the counter in the back and the meat selection is wonderful. Highly recommended. If I have one complaint, it would be the slow moving pharmacy drive up. I do believe some of this is out of their control as customers do not see the request to pull to the back of the line as they are waiting for their prescription. This can cause traffic headaches in the parking lot as the long line clog the main entrance. A gentle reminder from the staff may help alleviate some of this. Even though staffed with numerous people, the pharmacy is always busy which I believe is a testament to the quality of their service.
