My family has been getting take-out from Kawa for a while now and loving it. Last night I went with my parents & kids for dinner at the restaurant… first time eating there in person. I was pleasantly surprised by the interior and how nice the place is now(I haven’t seen it as my husband always picks up the take-out). We decided to go for the All You Can Eat special… for 3 adults &2 kids(3&6 years old) which they agreed to charge 10 each for since they obviously don’t eat as much as adults). We ordered soup & salad for all then a round of sushi. The food was all wonderful. The service wasn’t the fastest but the waitress was pleasant and made sure we ordered for the kids and was very helpful. Then she came back at the end of the sushi platter and said«Okay, done, dessert now?» Assuming we did not want any more food. This was the first hint that they didn’t actually want to make good on «All You Can Eat»… We ignored that and ordered some more edamame & sashimi. They took absolutely FOREVER to bring those things. It was clear they didn’t actually want us to get more food. Finally we received that & then went on to each have ice cream for dessert before leaving. I’m really disappointed in this experience. The food was great but why offer«All You Can Eat» if you don’t want to make good on that offer or make it a good/pleasant experience to decide to take part in?

I went with my wife to Kawa Sushi for dinner using a Groupon certificate. This was our first time back in almost 5 years following a poor experience at that time. I guess history does not change. The restaurant itself is very attractive and airy. We started off with a yellow tail roll and appetizers of spring rolls and goyza. The sushi roll was ok however I had to warn the waitress not to keep it under the lights for long. The spring rolls were almost tasteless however the goyza was ok. We then ordered dinners of beef negamaki and chicken tempura. The beef negamaki was overdone and rubbery with a basically uncooked base of vegetables. The chicken tempura was terrible. In fact the chicken was so bad it made a McChicken sandwich look like a gourmet meal. They replaced this dish with pad thai which was barely acceptable. After they replaced the dish they requested that I return my order of fried rice which was just ok anyway. I noticed on my bill a charge for 50 cents for brown rice even though this charge was not listed on the menu another attempt to nickel and dime the customer. Service was good and was responsive. The price to value ratio was below average for this type of restaurant, in fact prices were about 25% above average. All in all this was a poor experience and I will not be returning back in the future.

What can I say, I love a good groupon deal wherever I can find it. So, I got a groupon for Kawa and dined there one night. Unfortunately, we had a terrible dining experience here. The food was just… okay and the service was TERRIBLE. If I waited for the second round of sake we ordered, we still might be there. Such a shame. I realize that it was a groupon, but even at the discounted price we received, it wasn’t worth it. Sorry, Kawa!

Came here for a Friday night dinner and opted to order off the menu instead of the AYCE option they have. It seems like a family-run place and everybody is nice and helpful. There are around 8 booths, a few tables, a small Sushi bar, and a tv. The place is clean and so is the men’s bathroom. The ambiance seems good for a casual date. For the food, I’m not sure if it’s the area but it seemed the prices were a few dollars more expensive than similar restaurants I’ve been to in Long Island. I got a good discount so I didn’t mind too much. I had the Chirashi which had a decent amount of fish and rice, but I would have liked bigger pieces. The taste was on-point but even after I ate slowly and picked off other entrees, I was still hungry. There was also a Shrimp Pad Thai, which didn’t taste bad but was bland and definitely missing something as you’re eating it. We got it mild, but it didn’t have any spice at all. Shrimp and Vegetables Tempura entrée was a good amount with I believe 4 pieces of shrimp and 5 – 6 vegetables. The shrimp had the batter plus panko and the vegetables were only the batter. Both were excellent, seasoned correctly, light, and not oily at all. The dipping sauce also had a good taste… not salty and nothing overpowering. Chicken Teriyaki bento box was also a good amount w/a chicken cutlet and some vegetables in teriyaki sauce. Some salt, or more salt, may have made this a little better because the sauce was a tad too sweet. The box came w/a pretty big California roll, fried shumai, rice, and vegetable tempura. The last thing was a Salmon Lover’s sushi entrée which was good but didn’t seem enough. The person who ate it was eating off other entrees like he was still hungry. All came w/salad which had mixed greens w/not-really-sure what kind of sauce. It looked like Russian but I guess it was the normal ginger-dressing. I really couldn’t taste the dressing for some reason, but at least it wasn’t bad. This can probably use something like sugar, lemon, or pepper, but I’m not a chef nor am I Japanese… I just eat. All but the pad thai came w/Miso soup and I gave mine up so I didn’t get to taste it, but it had a decent amount of small tofu cubes and seaweed. I guess it tasted fine since everybody finished theirs. For the dessert, they have a bigger selection than normal. We ordered a vanilla and chocolate ice cream, fried cheesecake, and fried oreos. The ice cream were a couple of scoops each but it’s $ 5(the prices weren’t on the menu so I didn’t know otherwise I would have rather went to a frozen yogurt place or Ralph’s). The other fried stuff were around $ 6. The batter was the same batter as the vegetables tempura. The cheesecake was a decent sized-slice and it tasted okay but I won’t order it again… nothing special. The oreos didn’t have that crunch anymore and seemed stale due to them being soft(or maybe they’re not actual Nabisco Oreos and they’re just different) but I definitely won’t get this again. Usually, fried battered food is always good but these were a little disappointing. I think the batter could have used some salt since you don’t have that tempura dipping sauce. Overall, it was a good dinner and our host Monica/Monika was very friendly and helpful.

We’ve been hunting for a sushi place since leaving long beach, and everything around here is either really over priced — or over priced and underwhelming… or they charge you a buck for extra spicy mayo(review will come soon of THAT place), so I figured I’d just start stopping at all the strip mall sushi joints on my drive home when I’m in my Long Island Office. I actually think I don’t need to look further. The rolls here are decent and well made, and their prices are by far the most reasonable we’ve seen. The new owners are really nice, which I really appreciate in a restaurant. In fact, before I even got home and tried their food I texted Dan saying«I hope the food is good because these guys are so nice, I would love to make this our new sushi place» And then we ate, and the food was good! Finallllyyyyyyy I dont need to keep looking.

Kawa Sushi rocks! I came here once with a Groupon and have returned 3 times since, it’s become my go-to local sushi place. They have a lot choices on the menu and so far everything we’ve tried has been delicious, fresh and interesting. Even better, when we get the check it’s usually 30%off for everything no for(All You Can Eat) and Lunch Specials $ 7.99 … Staff was polite and attentive, even remembered me.
