Anyone giving De Alba less than five stars is loco in the cabeza. Top notch pan dulce. The selection is second to none. The conchas are outstanding, the cake slices are sublime(get the one with pink frosting), everything I tried was delicious. I don’t care if they raised their prices, it’s well worth the cost. I live in WA and can only dream of having a Mexican bakery this good. Although it’s for the best, as McAllen is ranked as the most obese city in America and I’m sure De Alba has a small part in that(although to be honest, this stuff is worth being fat for). Five well-deserved stars. Oh and the tamales are also really good, they’re spicier than the ones at Delia’s.

When I am craving sweet bread at the end of the day, I go to De Alba’s Bakery at 6:30pm for their hot«conchas.» I always end up buying like 4 of them and they only last me about 2 days, so yes they are irresistible with coffee in the mornings. My dad’s favorite are the pinapple empanadas because they are actually filled with pieces of real pineapple and its not just the jelly. My co-worker told me the menudo on Sunday mornings is good too, and I don’t doubt it, so guess where you can find me this Sunday… Yes! De Alba’s! :)

I like that they have a great variety of pan dulce and American desserts. They are sold by weight. You take a pair of tongs and a bag or box, fill it as you like, then they are weighed and you are charged. I’ve always enjoyed their goods, including their flour tortillas and tamales. But… they have raised their prices and I’m questioning whether the pan dulce is still a good value. There are indications they are trying to be more upscale but will their regular customers stick with these higher prices?

This bakery has good, not great, pan dulce. I recently purchased an orange mandarin cake at the Pecan location. My guests and I were very disappointed. Also, the price of the cake was too high for what I got. I will go back to Sweet & Tasty for their consistent quality.

Considered by many as the standard when it comes to classic Mexican pastry, but there are many other local spots all over the valley that can put out a better product on any given day. A major draw of De Alba’s is that they provide a large selection of pastries and have a high turnover rate so you are more likely to find fresher products here later in the afternoon than you would find at other bakeries.

Every time I make a trip down to the valley I have to get my pan dulce fix here! The bread is always fresh and they always have a large assortment to choose from… Love it!

Every time my boyfriend and I take a trip down to the Valley we make MULTIPLE stops here. I even get stuff to take with us on our way home. I am in LOVE with this place. I’ve gotten Apple Fritters, Chocolate Chip Cookies, and various other donuts, muffins, brownies and cakes and EVERYTHING is ALWAYSPERFECT. For a dessert person like myself, this place is HEAVEN. And everything is inexpensive! I’ve had the barbacoa and that is pretty good as well. WHYISN’T THISPLACEINAUSTIN? There isn’t really much in Mission/McAllen, but you HAVE to stop by this place if you are anywhere near it.

This is the best bakery/to go restaurant ever. Period. They charge by weight so be careful with heavy items. Blueberry muffins are the best. Also, anyting with srawberry or pineapple will please anyone. I always get my homemade flour tortillas here. And the tamales, how do they make them soooo good? They are super moist and soft, but do not fall apart. Some magic going on. I love this place and have to force myself NOT to be totally addicted. Oh yeah, and the green salsa is the best. I wish they had all meat barbacoa.

Oh good heavens — I wish this place were in Austin, too. I needed cookies for a meeting I was having and someone discouraged me from trying the bakery I had found on Unilocal, and instead said I should try this place. PERFECT solution — I got enough cookies, muffins, and other baked goods to amply feed about 15 people… all for under twenty bucks. What?! Yes. Here’s the outsider skinny, though. Natives to the RGV probably don’t need to know this, but passers-through do. One — there isn’t a sign in the building. So, you kind of have to know it is there, or, as in my case, have infallible directions. Two, the pastries are priced by the pound. WHAT?! Talk about simplicity! No counting pennies, or, determining if you can only afford x number of muffins compared to y number of cookies. BRILLIANT! Everything in the store looked yummy. I went at a time when I had skipped a meal, so I literally had to keep my head down so that I didn’t buy everything in sight. Love!

Another Valley institution. I feel like everyone I know in McAllen knows about this place. The bread is beyond legit. The couple times I have recently gone there have been lines. The last time I went I was in line for a little bit under 10 minutes. Evening seems to be a busy time for them. Totally worth the wait!

Here’s your chance to feel like a kid in a candy shop. Cases and cases of Mexcian and other pastries line the walls here. They’re sold by the *pound* so grab a bag and pair of tongs and fill up! Most don’t last a day so freeze your left overs. They also have cakes that look awesome but so far I’ve only had the ChocoFlan. It’s just as described and next time I’m going for the Better than Sex cake. I haven’t even tried the tortillas or barbacoa or other items this place has to offer but I have no doubt it’s excellent.
