We visited Hop Tung a few months ago while in the valley and had a really nice time. They offered huge portions for a reasonable price and we enjoyed everything we bought. My girlfriend wanted tofu added to the eggplant dish and the staff was happy to oblige. Unfortunately, we went again today to get a meal to go after working for hours on an online course. First, we asked whether the phở could be made with vegan broth and were cut off mid sentence to be told just to look at the vegetarian section. This wasn’t too bad, I understand people get annoyed at vegans and I’m more than used to it. Well, we figure out our orders and then we try to order the vegetarian eggplant dish with tofu added again and they tell us it is absolutely impossible. We said we didn’t mind paying more, but they didn’t care at all. Oh well, I’ve been a server and I know cooks get pissy about substitutions, we let it slide and leave with our food. We go home to eat and we find that we were given no plastic ware to eat with and we find a huge piece of beef in the middle of my vegetarian entrée. We have no idea if they included it in our dish because of spite, or negligence, but either way, we will never return. Edit: our fortune was pretty ironic though: forgive the action, forget the intent.

The best Asian restaurant in South Texas; above par service and quality; highly recommend garlic eggplant; Singapore Mefen; Bo Luc Lac and almost anything else in the menu. Very friendly environment and staff and very affordable prices.

The owner does not know how too treat his customers. He is extremely rude to his guests and made me feel uncomfortable to the point where I could not finish my meal, I had to walk out. Please, stray away from this place. To the two ladies that he disrespected, I’m am very sorry that you had to deal with someone so closed-minded.

Been coming here for over 9 years & love this place, but make sure you take cash. I got my card information stolen. After using my debit card here, I had multiple charges from China.

Love the phở, bún, dim sum, spring rolls, egg rolls, and bubble teas. The service can be a bit lackluster by the food is worth it.

Been back for the phở twice now and it’s not nearly as flavorful anymore. Very disappointing. The egg rolls were pretty good though.

The pad thai, sweet and sour chicken, baked duck, and hot pot are so fantastic. I always try to go when it’s not so busy. The fried spring rolls are to die for! I wish an order of those had 20. Service has been pretty good the past few times I’ve been there. Nothing to complain about!

Delicious food. Waitress we had was a little grumpy, and seemed like she didn’t like her job. But food was delicious!

I’ve been eating as this restaurant off and on for the past few years now. I am not an «expert» on Viet. food, but I’ve eaten enough of it(different cities) to know what’s good and what’s not. As for the food itself, I’d give it a solid B. Now, that being said, I also have various friends around town that are actually FROM Vietnam and China, and they have mentioned various times that the owners are not friendly to Asians. I never believed it, as the owners themselves are Asian as well, and then the other night happened. To keep it short, the restaurant wasn’t that busy and most of the tables were seated towards the front or by the windows. Then, a group of about 4 – 5 Asian men walked in. The owner(male) then began to walk them to the back of the restaurant and gave them a table by the bathrooms. One of the men asked for a different table, and the owner then said that other sections were«closed» and that the other sections were«full» for the waiters already. The men looked dismayed, so was I. Needless to say I was shocked and don’t really know how to feel about the place now. Total BS.

I recommend Hop Tung for any Vegans or Vegans who find themselves in the area. A very good selection to choose from. I personally recommend the Tofu with Black Bean Sauce and the Sha Cha Tofu. I’ll definitely be back the next time I am in the area!

Was craving for some Vietnamese food and by chance I happened to be in the area. Place look like your traditional simple style Chinese restaurant setup. Only a few tables were occupied and seemed they all got serviced so was great since I was a bit tight on time to dine. I ordered spring rolls to start off and a bowl of Phở Tai. Took them nearly 15 minutes for my spring rolls to come and another 20mins for my Phở! I asked the man which appeared to be the owner or manager and he rudely told me «kitchen busy». I looked around and I was the only new table that came the whole time. Sigh… phở was absolutely watered down and just flavored up with msg. I’m very sensitive to that and I was already getting a small headache. Spring rolls looks like a 5 year old did it. Definitely not coming back here ever again.

I was hesitant to stop in base on the reviews, however I was excited that a fellow friend said they served Banh Hoi… One of my favorite dishes. I had it once so far at Snowbite and was pleased, but they didn’t offer the Chao Tom but here they do. OMG… This was not banh hoi! It was just plain vermicelli noodles spiral up and plated. I ask the owner if this was really Banh Hoi and he seem so assure that it is. Maybe cause I’m Hispanic he thought I wouldn’t know. I didn’t want to make a scene I just left the noodles untouched… don’t serve and take short cuts to your customers. I gave them an extra star for presentation. If only i had my phone to take the picture but it died…

I was in the area and thought to stop by for lunch. Had heard good things about the place. I ordered Hot and Sour Soup and Beef Lo Mein. Overall it was okay. The soup was good(not great) but the Lo Mein was a bit bland and the beef tough. Service was not that great either although the place was almost empty. I am willing to give it a second chance, but then I will order Vietnamese. It looked much better.

I was craving Asian food for a couple weeks and my coworkers decided to give this place a try, so why not? First impression: the inside is very spacious, clean, and nice. Then it all started going down hill from there. Everything on the menu is more expensive than what I would normally pay for Asian food. Call me cheap if you want(I’m Asian anyway so kinda fits I guess). I’d refused to pay $ 5 for an order of springrolls(which I have been craving still, going on a month now) that I would normally pay half the price for or can make it myself(if there was any decent Asian markets around). My friend is a sucker for taro boba, so he went ahead and order it regardless of the fact that I thought it was pricey for boba. What did he get? A very frozen boba that was extremely hard to suck up. The bubbles had a weird texture, not exactly chewy or soggy, just… weird. I did not like it at all. I ordered the grilled pork vermicelli or bun thit nuong. It was a big disappointment. The noodles tasted like it’s dry and been sitting out too long. The meat was a little too sweet for my taste. My mom’s bun thit nuong is actually better than this place :(. I will not be back here anytime soon. There are still other Asian restaurants around here that I have not tried yet. Based on what I seen on Unilocal so far, I’m confidence I can find a better asian restaurant to satisfy my craving.

The prices always seem a little high here, but the food is consistently good and the atmosphere is some of the better I’ve found for an intimate dinner in McAllen. They serve Chinese and Vietnamese dishes as well as dim sum and bubble teas. It’s an easy place to linger in conversation while enjoying hot tea. However, the customer service can be kind of iffy. On one visit they served us shrimp/pork spring rolls after I had specifically asked for vegetarian and even mentioned to the server that there was an allergy to shrimp! The waiter didn’t even seem to care nor offer to compensate us for what could have been a life-threatening error. On this visit we had the elderly Asian waitress. She’s a doozy. OMG, avoid her. I’ve never had more inattentive service in my life. Thank goodness we weren’t in a hurry. A lot of times I order the chicken phở, but last time it didn’t have nearly the amount of vegetables as other times I’ve ordered it. On this visit we split the combination lo mein and it was really good. Honestly, I’m not really a fan of lo mein, but even I liked this one. There wasn’t a whole lot of meat, but the noodles were nice and thin and the taste was spot on. Their bubble teas tend to be overly sweet and limited on flavors. Maybe I’m naïve, but I fail to understand why certain flavors are only served as smoothies and others are only served over ice. I mean, c’mon, you have a blender. How difficult is it to just dump it in the blender and blend it up? Is it really that much of a problem? I’ll be back for the food and the lingerable atmosphere. Hopefully they’ll do something about those bubble teas and waitstaff.

This review is for the Boba. First of all. They use powders and apparently canttttt take the extra second to mix two flavors together. Why? Will your company shut down if you do? Will the world crumble? I need a better excuse than«oh. Just because we don’t. «Even though you offer strawberry banana or piña colada, which is pineapple coconut… but OK. So I ordered coconut and he takes twentyyyyyy minutes to tell me they’re OUT? Fail. To top it off they forgot my friend’s tapioca balls and they just brought it to him in a side dish… are you kidddding me? Haha. Take the damn drink back, pour them in and RESEALIT. Their Boba business is a JOKE. Never again. The best part is the terrible waiter followeddd us to the damn car and harassed us for not paying? Our friend was actually waiting in the LONG line with the money!!! Paying! Idiot waiter. How is this place still open???

Food was good but I got lost in the menu. It is way too long and many items repeat in the menu as one part is Chinese and the other is Vietnamese. Fried rice with egg and veggies was really good as was the noodles with veggies. Egg drop soup(kids ate this but my husband tasted it) was plain and I don’t recommend. Won-ton soup was really good except for the Won-tons(I know the irony). My husband said the Phở was good but don’t order the meatballs with it. Porky. He also liked the Jasmine tea but I could of swore it tasted like medicine. I wouldn’t go back but I know my husband would. It’s and inbetweener ladies and gentlemen, can a give a 2 ½ stars? Not going to 3, just not going to do it.

Great thing about this place is that you will definitively have a vast amount of options to choose from. Food is always great. My only issue is that they always charge you extra for any changes you make to the menu items. I don’t eat meat so when I asked for pad thai with only veggies and no meat or tofu, they wanted to charge 2 dlls extra for having it just veggie. Also, the tapioca teas are great but you get charged extra for light ice. Other than this, never had any issues with this restaurant.
