For first time visitors, it can be a bit of a challenge to figure out how to prepare your plate. The customer creates their plate with choosing the noodles, vegetables, meats, spices and oils. It takes a few visits to figure out your preference. Personally, I am not a big spicy hot sauces person, but do enjoy teriyaki sauce with my plate. Also, served with a side of steamed or fried rice and bread. Other companies have attempted to sell Mongolian food in the McAllen MSA, but Khan’s continues to be the best!

It was once an awesome place… now smells like fart and quality of food is like a bucket of foreskins. Oh well, on to the next :-)

The food is delicious but the service is awful. Arrived with my family before the dinner rush, there were 4 waitresses and about 2 other families there. I went to get my food first while my husband got the children and our stuff situated at a booth. One waitress took the drink order for the couple before me then skipped me and took the order of the people after me. When I texted my husband this, he asked another waitress for drinks and she blatantly told him no that our order was already taken. He had to get a third waitress to finally get our drink order and even then it took her almost 15mins to bring it to us bit yet other people arriving were getting their drinks right away. If the food wasn’t so delicious, we would’ve left and never come back.

The food was good here but I was not impressed seeing the buffet station have food bits all over the place and on the floor. Seeing the raw meats in containers on the buffet line was off putting especially since I did not know how long it has been setting out or seeing different meats getting mixed up.

Really good flavor, will take some time to learn how to stack the ingredients enough for left overs! Great price for the amount of food you get.

This place was unexpected and amazing. My coworker and I stumbled upon it accidentally while trying to eat at the next door restaurant that was closed. What a find! It’s located in a strip center and doesn’t look like much. When you walk in, you’re given instructions to take one white bowl and one red bowl and fill them at the salad/meat bar. The white bowl is larger and used for noodles and veggies and the small red bowl is used for raw meat and/or fish. Once each is full, you add spices to it then take it to the«bar» and the watch the guys cook it, Mongolian style. They ask you to pick an oil and then sauces and once it’s done you can add either fried or white rice and a roll. It’s a TON of food and only $ 8! The place reminds me of «You are cooks» where you basically make your own plate but watch someone cook it. It was delicious, cheap, and fun. I HIGHLY recommend going here!

This place has been around for years and is a staple in Mongolian style restaurants in the Valley. Before Genghis came down here this was all people knew and it was okay… but times have changed! This place completely fails to treat the customer like they are wanted there by making you wait for your meal at the counter. Why must I stand and wait for them to cook my order when I can be sitting down and having a conversation with my friends or family at a table? It would be much easier if we were able to grab a seat at a table and would also create less havoc and congestion around the grill. If you want a large variety of protein as well as vegetables and seasonings this is not the place! They have a very limited selection of items to choose from and it is always extremely overcrowded.

Very Good! My go to place when I am feeling in the mood some stir-fry. I first went to the location in Harlingen around 2010 and never stopped coming. The make it yourself bar is filled with a wide range of noodles and veggies that suit all palates. From egg noodles to spiral pasta and pineapple to snow peas, they have a good selection, and it is always fresh, as I notice employees changing and refilling the veggies a couple times through out my visit there. As for the meat they have pork, chicken, beef, and tofu(I think) among others, I always go with the beef and it has never failed me. Try the chili garlic sauce if you like a little bit of heat(not too much), hoisin and sweet and sour are great too. Egg rolls are made to order fresh and not too oily, service is great, the waiters/waitresses, are always coming by to check up on you, I always tip them for their excellent service. THEONLY ‘beef’ I have with this place, and mind you it is very minor, is that on occasion the chefs will prepare your food on the grill top without scraping off the black particulate that forms after numerous orders, this may make your stir fry taste a little burnt if they don’t scrape it off first. But this is no biggee simply just ask them to do so before they place your order on the grill and they are happy to oblige. But, overall a great place, check it out if you haven’t already.

The most missed restaurant by any poor college kids who leave the valley. Best food ever, unless you suck at picking out what you want and like, because everything that goes on your plate is your choice. The most customizable stir fry you’ll find in McAllen

Oh Khans, how I miss you so. This is probably my favorite place in the whole world. It’s a little weird telling people that, I guess because I imagine them eating there and wondering what I was so hyped up about… but I find it to be just so amazing. I first went to this location at the suggestion of my husband(boyfriend then) and his family. The concept of choosing your own ingredients and spices was little odd to me, but I’ve since zoned in on what works for me. I used to add in some of the pastas, but because I enjoy a lot of the vegetables I cut them out because they take up too much space. Usually, I opt for zucchini, broccoli, baby corn, mushrooms, carrots, pineapple, water chestnuts, chicken, pork, tofu, topped with peanuts, sesame seeds, and a lot of cayenne pepper and garlic powder. Now if that sounds like way too much, I assure you it is, I would sometimes get stares at my bowl. When you get to the area surrounding the grill you are given a number(it all depends on how busy it gets, which is often), and are given a choice of oils to cook the food in as well as a choice of sauces to top it all off. I get olive oil to cook with. For anyone new to this place, I would recommend the house blend of sauces: chili garlic sauce, teriyaki, and a Mongolian dragon sauce. I have no idea what that last sauce contains(it’s a secret!), but rest assured, that combination is worth a try. You can specify how much chili garlic sauce you want, though they usually ask WHILE pouring the sauce on your food, so if you want it mild think fast! This includes a choice of white or fried rice and a roll. I prefer the fried rice because I like to add the peanuts from my meal into the rice. I haven’t gone to many other Mongolian grills, but the ones I’ve tried just don’t compare to me. The next time I’m back in Texas I will be here for sure!

This is my brother’s and several of my friend’s favorite go-to restaurant. The portions are great and the prices are too. But it’s a choose everything yourself type of place(meat, veggies, oil, condiments, etc) which for someone who know very little about cooking her own food(I almost always eat out) is a hit or miss.

The best local mongolian grill type restaurant we have. I normally make a really good dish here but sometimes the food looks like it’s been out for a while. Still never had a bad meal.

How anyone rates this place less than 4 stars is beyond me! Perhaps they don’t know how to maximize their dish. The Edinburg location was a great addition and upgrade to the McAllen location on Nolana boasting a larger grill and seating area with a modern look. Not to mention a bar, The Thirsty Bronc, that is connected next door which has Modelo on tap! I have tried Ghengis Grill and was not impressed after growing up with Khans. I’m sure the other mongolian grill place(Ron Fu’s?) is also inferior to Khans deliciousness! ALWAYSGETTHEHOUSESAUCEWITHCHILESAUCEWITHOLIVEOIL The meat is always fresh, never frozen as well as a bountiful selection of crisp veggies and other vegetarian options. This is the one place I always make sure to visit when I’m in town since you can’t get any better elsewhere.

Hit or miss depending on your ability to successfully combine a variety of starches, vegetables, proteins, seasonings, and sauces. In this scenario, you practically need a culinary background to end up with a good meal. Play it safe and ask for the house sauce(Dragon), and tell them how spicy you like it.

How can you complain about the food when you prepare your own plate, right? Let me tell you how — DETAILS! Getting a table is somewhat confusing. Do they seat you? Do you seat yourself and the waitress comes and slams a ticket down at your table? Anyone ever just stood there at the door? They’ll come over and take your drink order before you even have a table selected! Or do they choose your table for you? Who knows? Victoria E. said it best — the food is out in the open. If this were a different part of the world — or Texas, for that matter — where people were actually considerate and knew a teensy bit about food safety, I’d feel more comfortable, but in an area where children run rampant with no supervision and the adults are mostly just bigger versions of children, your raw food will most certainly be tossed in and out of bowls as choices are made. Raw meats that are dropped can sit on the counters for a while before being cleaned — not good. The variety of sauces is amazing. I(and I may be the only one in McAllen) get Hoisin every time. For those who haven’t tried it, it’s essentially house sauce rolled into one dark sweet sauce. Food, cooked in butter of course. My biggest complaint. The one gripe I have that completely prevents me from going higher than two stars — you really have no say over the done-ness of your food, even the beef. Granted, given that it’s just been sitting out for God-knows how long and should probably be well-done anyway, I don’t like well-done beef. This is typical of most Valley eateries, though, where«bien cocido»(well done) seems to be all anyone understands or appreciates. I’ve been here many times, I’d eat here again, but it’s nothing I’d go out of my way for. Pro-tip: Ask for no rice or bread with your meal. Then get stared down by everyone else in line.

Yes, I am aware that giving Khan’s any fewer than 5 stars is the Valley is blasphemy. Please hear me out before calling me with death threats. We’ll start with the bright side. The food is delicious in that gooey, nasty, I-can’t-believe-I-actually-like-this, Big Mac sort of way. The food is certainly plentiful. You get about 13 standard serving sizes of rice or pasta with every plate. The food is also cheap! What can be so bad about lots of delicious cheap food? The answer is Salmonella. Room-temperature raw beef, chicken and pork out in the open, and only laughably covered by cough guards. I witnessed people serve themselves chicken and shrimp and then put the chicken back! Allergies, people! This place is a nightmare for anyone with seafood, peanut or MSG allergies. I would be totally fine with this place if the cooking process actually killed off the bacteria. But it doesn’t. I have been to Khan’s three times. I have been violently ill three times. Immediately following my visits. I say, give Khan’s a try. Hopefully you have a steel stomach that can savor the deliciousness while simultaneously fending itself from foodborne illness. If not, well, I’ve failed three times and still haven’t died yet… P. S. The second star is strictly for Khan’s extensive and fancy website which really is laudable in the Valley.

Where exactly is Mongolia? I am not the best at geography but I wonder if they have Mongolian grills on every corner and if so, I think I need to go visit. These kind of places are very hit or miss due to quality of vegetables and meat. Khan’s has never disappointed. I like that they give you two different bowls(one for veggies & one for meat). The choices of vegetables is endless and always fresh. Even the meat they offer ranges from turkey to tofu. Right before you get to cooking your food, there are tons of spices that you can add(and peanuts which give the food a lil crunch so make sure to throw some into your bowl). Sauce choice: get«house» no question. It comes with a combo of sauces and you choose how much chili-garlic you want in your food. You get fried or steamed rice and then this buttery/toasted roll on top of it all. The cooks & waitstaff are always friendly, fast and efficient which makes the experience that much better! Thank you Mongols(I think) for inspiring the idea of these Mongolian grills and Khan’s for perfecting it.

Mongolian is grill is my latest and longest craze… I became a Mongol Warrior many moons ago and still love it! What sets Khan’s apart you ask? 1. The crowds! Good food begat crowds… we walked in at 11:30 am and the place was packed… I hate lines but I felt like I was going to miss out if we didn’t stay! 2. Pasta! I don’t really care for it in mass in my bowl but the folks in McAllen do and they have three different types of pasta to choose from. 3. A 2 bowl process… one for meat and one for veggies… interesting! 4. Dry spices… don’t over do it by thinking you need a lot of seasoned salt… just a pinch I tell you! 5. The Grill… small compact and packed to the nuts with food… during rush our there were 8 orders sitting on the grill at one time! Holy crap! The signs tell you to watch your food, just in case the cooks get something a bit confused. 6. The rolls… to die for! Yah, they are pretty damn good I think! I kept eyeing my co-workers uneaten roll thinking I would snag it until she caught me leering and told me to back off… she was taking back to work for a snack! Damn… women don’t miss a thing!

I’ve eaten at every Mongolian restaurant in every city I’ve visited trying to find something equal or better to Khans and have not been able to find a better Mongolian grill ever. The food here is extremely flavorful and tasty and since you set up your own plate, you always get exactly what you want perfectly!
