Hier and Haines

This is my FAVORITE beauty salon in Northern Virginia. I have been getting my hair cut here for years, and am still thrilled with their personalized customer service! The salon is beautiful, and they have many nice touches like free coffee, tea and even snacks! There is a nice variety of stylists to accommodate any need — women, men, kids and older folks love it too! Free internet is a big plus. Never disappointed!

Reagan has been cutting my hair for the last year and I’ve been very pleased with her cuts. She always listens to what I want and is very patient as I show her the many pictures I always manage to find in between my appointments. I randomly chose her after reading about the salon in Arlington Magazine last year and I definitely lucked out with Reagan! I have found «my» stylist and will hopefully be going to her for many years to come.

I know this salon is on the pricey side, but after attempting to look for a better price elsewhere I have to say it really is a case of you get what you pay for.
I have been getting my hair straightened by Ashley for years. She does an absolutely fabulous job with my hair every single time. The other salon — sure it was cheaper — but it wasn’t nearly as good.
I’ve also had my hair done there for my wedding, I wish I could remember who it was, but Ashley was not available. This stylist did a fabulous job.
I also have to rave about Linda at the front desk. She is fabulous, very nice.
I would recommend this salon to anyone who is looking for cut, color, or straightening.

I drive all the way from Ashburn (which can take over an hour in traffic) just to have Ashley cut, highlight, and style my hair. I have been her client since moving to Northern VA and I always enjoy my monthly visits to the salon. Anyone who has had a bad haircut can understand the importance of being able to describe what hairstyle you want to your stylist. Ashley is a great communicator and not only does she know how to avoid a hair disaster by being honest about what styles will or won’t look good on me, she values my time by being punctual and efficient. I highly recommend her and Hier & Hanes Salon!

All of the staff at Hier and Haines is super friendly. The salon itself is clean and neat. There are snacks and drinks available (usually your stylist will offer it to you when you arrive). It is indeed pricey as many people have mentioned, but I think it’s pretty standard for the DC metro area for a salon of this caliber. And let’s be honest, once you find someone you can trust, it’s worth any price. We’ve all had our nightmare cuts/​colors but I haven’t had one here and I doubt I ever will! Don’t forget to bring cash for a tip as they can’t do it on a credit card.

Got a standard cut and color. It was a nice place, clean, pretty, comfortable. My stylist, Reagan, was great.
However, I think its a bit overpriced — I’ve never paid that much for a cut and color, and I’ve been to some nice salons. Will consider going back, but might look elsewhere because of price.

I have been going to Hier and Haines for many years. Annette knows how to do my thin hair and put color on it. The only bad thing is the cost.

«I love your hair – it’s so pretty!» (from a colleague)
«I’ve never seen you this happy or confident in how you look in the four years I’ve known you.» (from my wonderful husband, who has also seen me lose 25 pounds)
Trust me – before I trusted the folks at Hier and Haines, I wasn’t hearing these kinds of compliments – mostly because I was always hiding my hair in a banana clip on the back of my head! As I said, Chris did my hair. But this isn’t just a plug for him – it’s a review for the salon as a whole. Michelle and Annette consulted on my first cut, Aubrey helped advise my last one, and I really feel like all the stylists are excellent. Trust me – you’ll be glad you put your hair in their hands!

New to the area and just months before my wedding, I was a little hesitant to go on a hunt for a new stylist. (Visions of butchered hair floating down the aisle had me more than a little anxious…) Enter Unilocal.Saw the positive reviews. Went in an checked it out.
Aubrey was my girl. And she was so friendly! Never had that awkward what-do-i-say-now…won’t-she-just-shut-up?! moment that happens sometimes. I told her what i envisioned for my wedding… and what I wanted from the salon today. Deciding on just a trim (c’mon, everyone knows the majority of brides want to grow their hair. I’m no different!) and a color from blonde to medium brown. The color consult was very good. Aubrey made sure I knew what I was asking for (yes, I’ve done brown. no, i’m not going to hate it or cry or blame you and ask to change it back).
Overall – Color is beautiful. Shampoo receives an A+ (from both Aubrey and Ana). Hair feels healthy after an additional moisturizing treatment. Trim looks good. Everyone at the salon was friendly.
Hurray! I will definitely be back :)

I was referred to see Reagan by a co-​worker of mine. I got a cut and a full head of high-​lights and low-​lights. I absoultely love the color of my hair, and the cut was very nice too (my dad even complimented it!). Reagan was very sweet, and definitely took her time — it was a long appointment, but I definitely prefer that over someone who rushes, doesn’t get the color to the root, and does a half-​ass job. A few weeks later I like my hair even more than I did when I walked out of the salon — the color and the cut have both held up nicely. The only reason why I did not give this review 5 stars is because of the price — it was $ 230 before tip, which is pretty pricey in my eyes. Other than the high cost, I was very happy with my experience.

Char does great color! She put the prettiest highlights in my hair, and it’s pretty easy to mess up highlights in asian hair honestly.
I have thick, straight hair and have been pretty happy with her ability to shape into the cut. She’s super-​sweet and I never feel like she’s rushing through the process to get me in and out of the chair.
Also, I have to mention how NICE the receptionist on the phone always is. It seems like a small thing but too many times I feel like I’m bothering someone when I’m calling in to make an appointment.

I’ve FINALLY found the stylist I’ve been searching for! Char is, by far, the BEST at Hier & Haines, and I’ll never go anywhere else! She does a great job with my layers and I’ve never considered coloring my hair, however, for the first time in my life — I had my hair highlighted. And Char made it exactly what I had wanted! I’ll never go anywhere else! =)

I haven’t had a chance to visit the salon however they have this amazing make up artist, Ji that was referred to me for wedding make up trial. She was nice enough to be so flexible with my schedule (come on, trying to plan a wedding, you can’t possibly meet with every vendors) and she even offered to meet me at my place. Which was so sweet of her!
Once she got to my place, she asked me what type of look I wanted for the big day and I told her that I didn’t want to look like a «clown.»
An hour or so later, she put me at ease, totally made me look natural by emphasizing my eyes (not going overboard) and natural everywhere else. I’ve gone to see three other make up artists and she’s the only one that knew how to do «Asian eyes». I obviously hired her to do my make up on my big wedding day. She put me at ease and she really knew her make up. She’s great with her tools and I would honestly recommend her to every bride out there!!! She is so talented and I am highly impressed by her. Thank you ji for being so flexible and going out of your way to make your client feel so special.
I’ll def use her service again in the future for any special occasion to make me feel puuurty.

I have been to this salon a few times and haven’t had a chance to write a review. I just went recently again and wanted to share how happy I was with my hair and makeup. Normally I do not do makeup through a salon but because my stylist Ji does hair and also makeup, I figured why not give it a try. It turned out just the way I pictured it. I told Ji exactly what I wanted and she did just that. I also asked for her opinion and she had no problems giving me suggestions. All my friends loved the entire look when they saw me. I’ve been to plenty of salons that never give me what I wanted. My hair was either too short or looked the same. I loved both my haircut and makeup application. Ji will definitely be my regular stylist and makeup artist from now on. I can’t wait to see what cut and color she gives me next.

Michelle is the wind beneath my wings.
I have ridiculously crazy curly hair and my twice-​yearly trips to Michelle and her Grund straightening magic make my hair look fit for a human being, not a poodle or an ‘80s prom queen.
She has seen me at 7 am, 6 pm, and any time in between. I actually fly from Boston to see her since no one in Boston does the Grund straightening. I trust her 100%.
The only down side? The Grund straightening is so absurdly expensive I actually need to budget for it months in advance. Ouch.
