This is a small neighborhood restaurant, nothing fancy, but good Cuban/Puerto Rican food. The waitress Lilly is very friendly and attentive, quick service. I’ve been here a few times and the food is consistently good and comes out of the kitchen hot. I would recommend the Cuban sandwich and tostones(fried plantains). It’s Miami quality good. That’s how I measure all Cuban restaurants in the Chicagoland area. The sandwich is just as good as the many wonderful restaurants in Miami. I’ve also had the jibarito(sandwich made with two fried plantains and your choice of beef, pork or chicken) and arroz con gandules(rice with pigeon peas) which is Puerto Rican food. Also delicious! The menu also has a few non-Latino items but I never tried them. Not when the other food is so delicious.

Staff is helpful they walked me through the menu which is awesome because I never had jibarito sandwhich before. I picked the breakfast jibarito and it was good. Good portion size too.

Absolutely loved this place! I went there with a co worker after our shift for breakfast. The waitress was so nice and welcoming. She gave us a run through specials and options on the house favorite meals. The food was great. I had a ham & egg sandwich, he got a ham egg and cheese with lettuce & tomato, we both shared an order of tostones(fried plantains) All our food was fresh, hot and so good. I will definitely be coming back soon!

What ever you do… be sure your appetite is huge before you order«The Boss» Jibarito Breakfast. I could have avoided the hash browns, as I took them home. Couldn’t finish the Jibarito as it was. Great flavors, they could have tossed the ham on the flat top first along with warming the steak a bit more. Meat temp on some pieces were cooler, probably due to me being one of the first customers of the day. It’s a messy sandwich and it kinda fell apart when I tried to handle it. I was expecting a hopping crowd, but that never materialized this Saturday morning. I had my radar on that sandwich ever since I saw it on Chicago’s Best TV. I’ll be snacking on my free empanada for checking in on Unilocal later today.

I continue to try local restaurant’s and this is the 3rd time I have been to Café 23 in Melrose Park Illinois. I usually try something simple like a Steak Sandwhich with cheese and I have come to the conclusion that the sandwhich is average, but the price of this sandwhich is not. Not enough steak and the lettuce was old. Usually for a double steak with cheese within that same area I pay $ 5 or $ 6. At Café 23 I pay $ 6.75 for an average sandwhich(TOOMUCH). Then I also pay $ 1.45 for a can of pop which is over priced by .45 cents. I will not order that again.

Absolutely love this place. Food is great, the price is fair. If it is your first time going here, get the jibarito with the rice If you’re in the mood for authentic and delicious Puerto Rican food it’s well worth the trek no matter how far.

After seeing the Chicago’s Best episode I was determined to try this place out. But was quickly disappointed once arriving. Our waitress was not to helpful recommending any of the menu items. When asked if the specialty steak sandwich was good she was quick to advice us not to order it. Ordered the steak and eggs intense which was ok overall. I must say that the only thing that stood out was the Café con Leche which was really good. I’m not sure if I’d recommend Café 23 to someone else but it’s sad to say I won’t be returning.

Very poor service we placed an order for two sandwiches and it took them nearly 30 minutes to get done what should have been done in less than 15 minutes

I love this place!!! If it is your first time going here, get the jibarito with the rice(arroz con gandules). The steak on these sandwiches is super tender and just delicious. The rice is amazing. The empanadas are great and I could make a meal out of them. Same goes for the tostones(fried plantain chips). I also love the Cuban sandwich here. The owner takes great pride in her business and her product and you can tell when you walk in and taste this amazing food. I just don’t understand why there is a burger on the menu when there are these other great options. The restaurant is super clean and the food will not disappoint. Now I want to get a jibarito!

I enjoyed the steak jibarito with rice. It was my first jibarito so I have nothing to compare it to but it was pretty good. A little garlicky but I liked the sandwich and the service was good.

Had the usual steak Jibarito plate with a big mound of arroz con gandules. Let me tell you for spending over $ 10 with tip for lunch there… in I would have been still pretty hungry had it not been for the heaping serving of rice which was just o.k., a bit on the dry I thought personally. Not sure if I will return and if I do it won’t be for a Jibarito since it’s not any kind of value. I’ve frequented their old M.P. location and this portion control thing was a new surprise for me at their new location.

I’m so happy to know this place just moved & didn’t close like I thought! Living in Melrose Park I am so happy that this place is here. I’ve been there about 3x & have only gotten the jibarito special with the arroz corn gandules, my hubby & son prefer the sandwich Cubano but they are both delicious. It’s definitely a nice change from all the Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood.
