This is another place that I have spent a lot of time in for the Indie Memphis Film Festival the past four years. Circuit is a great little local playhouse space that is famous in its own right. Not a lot of people know that Elvis spent time at this very playhouse watching movies and eating popcorn! I digress. This playhouse is now two separate buildings made into one… one side housing the theatre itself and the other side housing a small event space. Sadly, the building is quite dated, but it has a cozy, old-school feel. As a lover of all things Memphis, I love the historic appeal of this place and honestly am not sure that many Memphians are aware of its neat history. It is now a smaller branch of the larger Playhouse on the Square across the street, but it has character and theatre and history loving staff that love to share with you the stories the walls of this building witnessed! Check it out!

I love coming here. They offer great discounts for students and coupons in the Entertainment book as well if you’re not one anymore. They always have some play running and while I don’t go to all of them I do like to go a few times a year. I’ve always found it to be an enjoyable experience. They often have a wide variety of plays showing that can suit anyone’s interests. I went to one this month and plan to check out a few more in the fall. Favorite Plays I’ve Seen Here: — Avenue Q — Debbie Does Dallas — Seminar

Circuit isn’t fancy, compared to the renovated Playhouse on the Square, and it doesn’t have the budget. What it does have is a gritty in-it-for-the-art-of-acting essence, and a devotion to serving Memphians and the community within its walls. Local artists are on display(currently two gouache artists, one who rides her bike and takes photos of the downtrodden parts of midtown), sets may be minimalistic, but there is usually a bar and it has a very cozy feeling. Support your local theater!

Circuit Playhouse is directly across the street from Playhouse on the Square. The theater itself is not quite as nice as Playhouse on the Square but it’s still a pretty good deal to take in a show because any seat in the house is a good seat. We recently went there to watch Reefer Madness, which was funny and entertaining at times but I personally wasn’t awestruck by this play and I don’t think the audience was really impressed either because of the lack luster applause the actors and actresses received at the end of the play. I’d highly recommend the Circuit Playhouse.
