i’m kicking myself for not visiting here sooner. it was on my radar about a year ago, but i completely forgot about it until i received an email newsletter from Unilocal that mentioned it. i stopped in after work and picked up a half pizza to take home and bake(they offer that option as well as baking it there) and a milk chocolate truffle. both were outstanding. i ordered the veggie pizza without black olives and must say, that although the thick, rectangular ‘sicilian’ style pizza in the past has not been my pizza crust type of choice — this is amazing. for a seriously thick crust to work — it has to be really flavorful — and this was. i would recommend ordering a side of sauce to dip it in. outstanding. the toppings and cheese were good — obviously of a better quality than most pizza places. and half a pizza is enough for two people, in my opinion. the truffle was great, too. again, obviously quality ingredients were used in making it. i met both sharon and her husband while there and they were both very friendly. i’ll definitely be returning to sharon’s — i want more of that pizza and need to try their bagels, bread and sandwiches. it’s a lovely little place that we should support, memphians!

Been here twice now and the pizza keeps me and the wife going back. just recently we had game night at our house and took three half pizza’s to go. They were wonderful. Everybody loved it. We are from Chicago and are always in search of good pizza in Memphis. Sharon’s is a winner for us. We drive from Arlington! We have had some of the chocolate and it is excellent as well. Although very small inside it is still comfortable. The folks there are very nice. Keep the good pizza coming!

Sharon’s has quickly become one of my girlfriend and I’s favorite places to go for lunch. We haven’t had any of the chocolate OR the bread(which should speak to the versatility of the place), although both look delicious, as do the sandwiches in the case. The pizza is what keeps bringing us back. For a guy who grew up in the Northeast and has always been a firm devotee of foldable pizza, Sharon’s thick, bready, rectangular pizza is quickly becoming a favorite. We have only ever gotten the plain cheese pies, and have never been disappointed by the tangy sauce or the fresh mozzarella dripping off of each slice in gobs. It’s also not greasy at all by pizza standards, which has her convinced that it’s healthier(although I doubt it). As a bonus, we always leave with leftovers that reheat wonderfully — and I’m the kind of eater who never leaves a place with leftovers. The décor is minimal, as is typical of a newer eatery. However, I would suggest that they diversify their beverage options. It sounds like a minor gripe, but bottled water just doesn’t wash a big stack of pizza down as well as a mountainous, refillable fountain soda. I imagine that it’s also the type of place that would benefit from an affordable but high-quality wine selection, but even if that’s not an option for them, a fountain is really a must for a place that wants to stake any sort of claim on their pizza. If their goal isn’t to stake that claim, it should be — the pizza is really, really good. Give it a try.

I don’t know the Sharon behind Sharon’s Chocolates and Bread Café, but I like her. She’s managed to combine two of my favorite things into one amazing little restaurant. Sharon’s located in a small, barely-marked inlet in the shopping center at Poplar and Humes. Inside, the atmosphere is pleasant, but fairly nondescript. While there are a few tables and a little bit of decoration, the real centerpiece of the store is the chocolate case. The case is loaded with huge, bulbous truffles. I ordered a box of six($ 17.50 for six, $ 2.95 for one). All of the boxes are custom packed — I chose key lime, coconut, orange, passion fruit, mocha and milk chocolate. I highly recommend cutting Sharon’s handmade truffles in half to eat them. They’re really big — almost 2 inches tall — and incredibly rich. I especially liked the key lime, which was a ball of white chocolate filled with creamy lime filling From the bakery case, I got a giant slice of salt and rosemary focaccia bread. It was perfect — all soft and salty and herbal. There were wire baskets overflowing with baguettes and a bakery case packed with stromboli-like rolls. Sharon’s Chocolates and Bread Café is open every day for lunch. They have a full lunch menu. I’ve heard great things about their pizza, so I’m thinking a return trip is in order.
