Lenny’s Sub Shop

Ive been going to this location since i moved into the neighborhood about 5 years ago. I have had properly made sandwiches and poorly made sandwiches. I would say that 75% of the time I am unsatisfied with the quality of meat and the prep of the sandwich. Today was a new low. I ordered the french dip in an effort to try something besides the meatball, american club, or the philly. This sandwich was so bad that i thought about driving back up to the restaurant and demanding my money back. The texture of the meat was dried out jerky and the au jus was just heated soy sauce. This location has a bad reputation and If i ever crave a lennys sub again i will drive over to the square. STAY AWAY FROM THE POPLAR/​CHICKASAW LOCATION.

I come to this location every so often. I find myself ordering the number 4 (turkey) combo each time I visit. The staff is friendly and service is fast. No complaints here.

Every sandwich in here is a winner! Haven’t eaten at the establishment. I’m a sandwich to go girl. definitely one of my repeats when I get back to Memphis.

My first experience wasn’t too bad. I told the worker it was my first time, and all he said was «Oh Ok». So I just ordered something that seemed good. Yes the sub was good and fresh but a bit pricey. I could have got a full meal for $ 10, and not just a sub with drink. They had only Coke zero cans left. The lemonade was good but for me was way too sweet. I just think they could of serviced me better. Hopefully my next experience is better, or maybe try a different location.

Omg, Lenny’s, just thinking of their amazing Subs makes my mouth start to water. Love love love Lenny’s, the best sandwich joint in the city. I always had a theory about the less PC a place in the South, the better it tastes. Yes Styrofoam is bad for the environment, but any place with Styrofoam below the Mason Dixon line is going to have good food. I wish they would come to the West Coast styrofoam and all!

I found this place while searching along Poplar Ave for some lunch. Someone at work recommended that the subs were really good. I should’ve thought more about that person. I ordered the Steak N Cheese, and when the guy asked me if I wanted Lettuce and Tomato on it, I looked up confused, and wondered, «Oh it’s one of those places.» People should know what does and doesn’t belong on a certain type of sub, no matter where you are in the United States. I didn’t think a $ 6 large sub with chips, drink, and cookie would make me regret going here. Pricing wasn’t bad, but I expected better quality. A large sub for Lenny’s, is what I think would be 2 large subs. Approximately 19 inches of sub sandwich went with me out to my car. In between the bread was that Jimmy Dean style, flash fried steak that isn’t good at all, carries no flavor other than the pepper and salt that’s been poured over it, and greasy peppers and onions to go with it. I didn’t go back to Lenny’s, nor would I because I don’t like to go to sub places that care too much about speed of cooking over taste of food.

What can I say. The sandwiches are great. The chicken philly is delicious. However I suggest that you call ahead because the waiting is ridiculous. They have a very small inside with very few seats.

My boyfriend thought he knew subs. Silly boy. I’ll give him a break since he’s from LA but he made a bet with me that Lenny’s wouldn’t be the most amazing sub he has ever had in his life!
…needless to say, I won that bet. Now every time he comes to Memphis, Lenny’s is a ritual!
I don’t know if they have a secret ingredient or do something to their bread… maybe it is because everything is so fresh?
But you can’t go wrong here. Everything is good! I love their turkey sub but if I’m having a fat day I’ll just go for it and eat a meatball sub!
This isn’t a place I want to dine at though. It has a boring décor and no waiter service. I get my food to go 99% of the time.

Best quick sandwich place and a Memphis original. Always friendly service as well.

Never thought it was possible to get a good Italian Sub outside of Philly or N. J…but Lenny’s proved me wrong. When you say «crushed peppers» at any of the sub-chains…be prepared to get looked at like you just landed from Mars. But Lenny’s knew what it was all about. The bread is good (although not a sub roll like you get from other places). But the meats… fresh. And Lettuce shredded, hot peppers crushed, oil /​vinegar. Yeah… these guys knew how to make a sub. Somebody has to be from Philly or NJ… just can’t believe otherwise! A definite must on my next return to Memphis!

Good subs, but paying $ 14 – 15 for a 12″ combo meal is a bit steep for me when it comes to a sandwich. The wife is a veggie and is not at all a fan of there subs. Kwik Chek and Super Sub Shop are better and cheaper local places. Firehouse and Jimmy John’s are comparable chains imo (and cheaper).

I am in love with Lenny’s. I am debating opening a Lenny’s in Seattle. I had the cold roast beef and it was one of the best subs I have had. The pepper relish and pickles is what did it for me, as well as the super thin sliced beef and provolone cheese. The bread is perfectly light and crusty without being heavy.
Their chips are also really good. I like the BBQ flavor. This sandwich was so good that I had a hard time saving a teeny bite for my fiancé back home (and the sandwich is gigantic)!!

All the other locations have been pretty awesome, but this one near Poplar and Humes/​Tillman is pretty awful. Watched the cook wipe his nose with his gloves on. Sandwich (chicken philly) was soggy (read: dripping), lukewarm, and resembled cat food. Absolutely inedible. If you want an awesome Lenny’s sub, go anywhere but this one.

Every time I fly through Memphis I always make it a point to swing by Lenny’s to pick up a turkey sub with the amazing red pepper relish. There is nothing better… I wish that this was a national franchise and not just a Memphis thing.

I like the intentions.
And from what I have read from others, it seems a lot of good experiences have been had. But, it looks like mine was not one of them.
I went in with my huge travel voucher that I got as a result of a nearly 7 hour delay. Oh yeah, be jealous.
So I took my whole $ 6 and decided to make it work the most for me. Since most of Lenny’s sandwiches are around $ 7, plus this place was local, I figured this was my best bet.
So I ordered the tuna sandwich. What I didn’t realize, though, is that when I ordered tuna, I was really ordering a mayonnaise sandwich. Look, I am no mayo-​fearing guy, but there comes a point where enough is enough. And that happened here.
The tuna salad alone is soaked in the stuff. But then the slather it on even more.
The cheese was fresh cut on a slicer, but something else that bugged me is that they cut the cheese on the same blade as the meat. Can you say cross food contamination?
My two largest issues with this experience: 1) the place was empty. No line, maybe 2 other people sitting in the dining room, and about 4 staff on duty behind the counter. which caused… 2) I specifically asked for no mayonnaise and everything else. Confirming the sandwich maker’s question, ‘yes, I would like hot peppers’… I had no hot peppers, and I had way too much mayo.
It may just have been the guy I dealt with, but I was not pleased. I hope others that have gone/​go have a better experience than I did…

I think that I’m the first ‘A-​OK’ here. Hm.
I want to love Lenny’s, but I just don’t. If you really love cold cuts, and you like them piled on thick, they do that.
Personally, I like the other place better. You know the one that I’m talking about. The first one.
I just don’t like the smell of Lenny’s. However, my husband thinks that Lenny’s is the best thing since sliced bread.
I’d get basic turkey with veggies back in the day. And, yes, I still prefer the other place. No, I’m not getting kick-​backs. Sorry, Lenny’s!

Take note Subway– this is what a sandwich chain should look like. I was in Memphis for 5 days and ate Lenny’s twice. It’s that good. I had the chicken salad sandwich and sour cream and onion chips both times. Also love the lemonade.

I’m not usually a fan of airport food. It’s supposed to show off the best a city has to offer theoretically. Other than the San Diego Airport’s Rubio’s, I’d say the airports generally show off a slop version of the local cuisine. This applies to the Memphis airport as well, with its numerous crappy barbeque joints and Elvis-​themed restaurants. At least be honest and offer a nice double homicide themed restaurant, or perhaps a failed public housing projects diner. Then we’d really get the taste of Memphis.
Luckily, the real gem of the Memphis Airport is the Lenny’s, located in the B Terminal. I was promised the best sandwich of my life by one of my traveling companions, a TN native. This may have been hyperbole, but not by much. Enjoying a Lenny’s cheesesteak at 9 AM was fantastic. It was lacking Cheez Whiz which would really complete the sandwich, but every other component was excellent. The bread was soft, flavorful, yet kept its structural integrity intact. The meat was nicely grilled, the cheese was nicely melted, and the sandwich had a nice glob of mayonnaise to help cool the mouth from the sizzling cheesesteak. Additionally, Lenny’s uses their exclusive Pepper Relish to really spice things up. Next time I get the joy of visiting a Lenny’s, I’ll be purchasing a jar. I also like that Lenny’s chips reject the newest fad of overly crispy kettle chips, and just have flavorful traditional chips that perfectly complement the sandwich.
I’d also like to point out that, unlike every other airport dining establishment, I wasn’t given a heap of sass from the staff. Even at 9 AM, the staff was friendly and ready to make cheesesteaks, even cracking some jokes. This Lenny’s is how things should be done, and I’m already excited to drive an hour to the Fredericksburg, VA location ASAP.

After being stuck at the Memphis airport all day Wednesday, I was able to hit up Lenny’s and order their Italian sandwich. It was very simple with prosciutto, salami, provolone, and a couple other meats that I can’t remember (with choice of wheat or white roll). There’s also a spicy relish that you can get on the sub that gives it an extra kick. The staff here are really friendly and seem to enjoy their jobs (which is hard to come by these days). If I ever had to make the choice between Lenny’s or Subway/Quizno’s, I would choose Lenny’s.
