I barely even know where to start about my experience here. I went with someone who is a sort of sushi expert, so I didn’t get any of my «not really sushi» things like Philly rolls and crunchy rolls. We were going authentic here(for the most part). When I told a friend of mine I had never eaten here, he was shocked. He knows that I like the raw stuff and he insisted that we go and get dinner here. Fine, twist my arm. I let him order and I only knew for sure that I wanted one thing: the tuna sandwich. I’ll get to that in a bit. We started with the Ankimo, which is steamed monkfish liver and the assorted pickles. I’m a pretty big fan of liver of all types, so the Ankimo was right up my alley and I really enjoyed it. The assorted pickles were yummy and were a nice start to the meal. Next we ordered the tuna sandwich, an Ume roll, a spicy tuna roll and a yummy fatty fish that I can’t remember the name of. The tuna sandwich was really good. It was blue crab that was sandwiched between two pieces of tuna sashimi. It was a total mayonnaise bomb, but I liked it a lot and it was a yummy guilty treat. Next was the Ume which was pickled plum in rice and seaweed. This was incredible! I wasn’t expecting to like something that was this simple, but it was really good and it was packed with flavor. The fatty fish sushi and the spicy tuna roll were both perfect and I would order both again. For dessert we had Tamago, which is a delicious egg custard served over rice in the same style that sushi is served. Apparently, you need special training in order to be able to make Tamago and only a few places in NOLA actually serve it. I liked it a lot, and while it was odd having rice with something sweet, somehow it worked. I knew that this place was«legit» when a large party of Japanese men came in, didn’t speak a word of English and ordered a TON of food that all looked incredible. Seriously, I wanted to be invited to that party. I finally see why this sushi spot makes every«top restaurants in NOLA» list that ever comes out. I will absolutely return next time I’m in the mood for sushi in Metairie.

Haven’t been in a while and decided to go with a friend since my favorite place wasn’t open. I completely forgot how overpriced everything is. Our waiter was nice and explained the menu well. I ordered the seafood platter which is just a plate of fried everything! Wish I would’ve just ordered a roll but the menu wasn’t detailed enough explaining what was in each roll so I just opted for something easy since my waiters English wasn’t that good. Food was ok, only ate half of the meal and took the rest home and like most doggie bags, it’s just sitting in the table.

Came here for the first time and got 3 different sushi rolls. We had the Steve roll, blue crab roll, and soft shell crab roll. All 3 were delicious and the service was great

The food was good and well seasoned but the service was TERRIBLE! They sit you down, take your order, bring you your drinks, salad, and soup and you don’t see a waitress again until you get your check.

i lived behind this place from 1996, have come here for years but the sushi bar only for me. Miss Peggy is very kind and the staff very attentive. ive read the reviews across the board, honestly i have always been very happy but i dont stray much from my favs. tuna tataki, toro, green mussel, baked scallop, crunchy roll and amberjack with ponzu sauce. i personally have never had an issue. i truly love this place but it happily drains some funds!

We had the sushi and the hibachi. The sushi was horrible, but the hibachi wasn’t too bad. However, the chefs are very boring! So if you are looking for a fun place to get hibachi, this is not it! We took out son, who is 5, for the first time and the chef didn’t even do anything to slightly entertain him! We were very disappointed. We have been to quite a few hibachi places before, and the show is always the best part! The hibachi food was pretty good, but they used a lot of pepper, which was a little spicy for my son. We have heard good things about this place before, so we may have to give them another try.

Sushi is like cafeteria food. It’s gone downhill big time. The waiters rush you to order. Not worth going to anymore.

I went to Shogun’s a bunch of times when I was in high school, but this was the first time I’ve been in over 10 years. We had a group of 8 of us for a co-worker’s birthday and sat at the hibachi table. The food and service was great, but the parking lot is atrocious. There are pot holes all in the back parking lot, and no one knows how to back up or park properly when speeding off of vets. I would always get the steak because I find that hibachi restaurants always over cook the chicken.

We have visited over a half dozen times so I guess I am over due for a review. We always sit by the hibachi but end up ordering from the sushi bar too. The hibachi cooks are pretty good but the waitresses usually suck. They either forget to bring your salads or rudely tell you they are out of something you ordered. I always feel rushed when looking over the sushi options which is way over priced by the way. I think they get the award for the most overpriced rolls in all of Metairie. They dont have anything out of the ordinary yet charge more than everybody. FYI The good looking ‘tuna sandwich’ in the Unilocal pictures is $ 20.

Their hibachi and regular menu are both delicious. I would say the only down side about their hibachi is that during dinner time, they make you pay additionally for fried rice. This is the only restaurant that I’ve been to that doesn’t already include fried rice to the already pricey meal. Hibachi during lunch is great. Reasonable prices with big portions and it includes the fried rice. *side note: the last time we were there for hibachi we noticed all of the old grease in the hoods and light fixtures. They look like they haven’t been cleaned in years. On the regular menu I’ve tried their teishoku dinner(the pork tonkatsu) and it’s my favorite thing to eat there. Their fried tofu isn’t good. It’s not crispy and seems to be under cooked most of the time. Their udon soup is pretty bland as well. But something that I have to order every time I’m there is the marinated salmon belly sushi. It’s one of the best sushis I’ve had and it’s always consistent. Don’t order the marinated tuna belly in its replacement(once I did because the salmon ran out). It doesn’t have the same amazing flavors. Usually when I come here I get the same thing and those few things that I do order are great.

Excellent sushi. Love their soft shell crab roll. Limited selection of saki — surprising as this is arguably one of the best sushi spots in NOLA and a 200 mile radius. Excellent service.

I highly recommend dining here. Shogun has been around for decades, and rightfully so. Right when you walk into Shogun, you are greeted with a smile. The atmosphere is lovely and has an authentic feel. The service is wonderful as well. As for the food, it is even better than the atmosphere. When you first sit down, you are given a warm towel to freshen your hands. This restaurant has all the Japanese staples. I ordered the fresh salmon sashimi; it is rich and flavorful without too much fat. I also tried the ramen when I was there and the soup was a perfect hot temperature. Also, if you look at my photos, we ordered the BBQ squid. Presentation makes for so much of a meal and the BBQ squid was presented in the shape of a fish — too cute!

Katie and I were looking forward to this experience for quite awhile and the big day ended up being my 38th birthday. We entered the doors, sat down in front of Kaz, and for the next hour we were treated to what might possibly be our favorite of all restaurant experiences in years. It was THAT good. When I lived in Seattle, I was a sushi fiend, visiting as many places as I could visit in the hunt to find the best sushi experience. This experience brought me back to those days, with my senses overwhelmed at the splendor of truly amazing sushi from the hands of a truly amazing artist of the craft. I firmly believe in putting my full faith in a sushi master. If you know what you’re doing, I will eat anything you put in front of me(except oysters because they hate me). I trust you to supply the greatest experience possible that day at that point in time. Kaz did not only not let me down, he completely blew me away. Starting off with a volcano looking amalgam of sushi, we knew we were in for a treat. Next up: three different kinds of Nigiri sushi, followed by the lightly toasted face of an Amberjack, and more Nigiri, this time made of scallop and Foie gras. Desert was red bean ice cream and then top shelf sake. The food was truly amazing, but it was the full experience that really and truly impressed. This is the place to go to feel like a VIP. There are many places in this town that make us feel like all we are to them is a walking wallet, existing only to hand them money in exchange for their overpriced and entirely shitty excuses for food in the hopes we’re tourists that don’t know any better. Here I felt like someone’s friend, someone of actual value. That is the reason I would give Shogun a 6th star if I could. I will enter these doors again, and sit down in front of Kaz again, and I have no doubt whatsoever, it will be another incredible experience. Thank you, Kaz for crafting such a wonderful new memory and for reminding me it’s still possible to be truly impressed in this town where people sell $ 10 grilled cheeses that taste like wood and everyone can’t wait to burn their money for the chance to pretend it’s food.

My companion had been here quite a few times and decided I should try this place as well. We came in around 9:30 p.m., reading online as well as here that they close at 11pm. We chose to sit at a table since I wanted a hibachi entrée and he preferred sushi. We were greeted promptly and orders were taken and served in a timely manner. The food was good. Just good, nothing special but nothing negative. Our waitress did not check back with us at any point during the meal. Around 10:40pm, another server walked up mid-meal and said«Hey guys we are about to close, any last minute orders or are you okay?» We responded we were fine, but checked our phones to see if we were there past closing time. Immediately after the other sever walked away our waitress sat down the check in front of us and walked off. At this point, it was obvious we were being rushed out, 15 minutes before they closed, with other patrons still in the establishment. The staff was hanging around in front of the sushi bar, facing us, just waiting for us to go. So threw the rest of our food in a to go box, paid, and left… at 10:45pm. Food was decent, but as a service industry veteran myself, it’s crucial that you treat the last guest of the night the same as the first guest of the day. There’s nothing that ruins an experience more than being rushed out, with ample time before closing. Experience ruined.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant of all time. I’ve eaten sushi all around the world(though not in Japan), and this is still my favorite. The sushi quality is always top notch, and if Tony’s working behind the counter, you can get some amazing chef’s choice rolls(but if you’re sitting at the sushi bar and he sees you dipping the sushi he’s made in soy sauce, he’ll fuss at you). They also have sushi I’ve never had anywhere else, like quail egg shooters and sour plum rolls(which are my favorite). And, they have an «authentic Japanese» portion of the menu. I’ve been here so many times that I’ve tried pretty much everything on the menu, and the only things I haven’t enjoyed have been foods that aren’t quite in-line with the American palate(like fermented soybeans). Their hibachi is also quite good, but pricey, and I enjoy sushi more, so I rarely eat the hibachi. The squid steaks are an interesting and delicious choice. I like this place so much that for about a year I ate her once or twice a week. Quality and service have always met or exceeded my expectations.

I’m just going to put this out there. I don’t get it. I kind of get it for lunch, but definitely not for dinner. The price for dinner hibachi with fried rice is obscene. We’re talking opening price of $ 25 for chicken hibachi dinner. In what world? Yes, I know you are getting entertainment, but call me a party pooper I just don’t find it worth it. I will say that the portions are simply huge, too big for one person and don’t even think about splitting because you will be punished. Lunch is a different story, the prices are cheaper so if you must I would suggest to go for lunch.

This is hands down the best Hibachi and Sushi I have ever had in the USA. The flavor profile of the food mimics the true taste of Japanese cuisine. I lived in Japan for over a year in my younger days and this place brings back all the great memories of fresh sushi and the great food that I once had is now available here.

Note: this review is only for the hibachi experience Ok, so I’m trying to be a little tougher with my reviews because I know I can be a real softie. I would normally rate this place 4 stars but it really is a very solid 3 stars! I think to date my favorite hibachi has been at Little Tokyo in Mid City. Omg their filet mignon hibachi was so good I can still taste it in my mouth! Back to my review, can you tell I’m easily distracted? Well, I learned my lesson from the last time I had hibachi and this time shared the filet mignon hibachi with hibachi rice with my friend. I had already eaten before this dinner bc I brought Popeyes to my BFF and his sick Mom so this was like a second dinner. And since most restaurants serve so much food with their hibachi my friend and I decided to split an order and I also got some snow crab rolls. It was my nephew’s birthday and there were like 10 of us which took over an entire hibachi table. Moon was our hibachi chef and he was hilarious. He was very patient with a table full of Asian people with phone cameras taking slow mo cool movies of him lighting the oil on fire and making the onion volcano erupt! He even juggled the sticks that were on fire, very cool! We had a great time and he kept us entertained for the whole evening! He even lit the oil on fire a second time when I asked him to bc I didn’t take a good picture. Yup, I know I’m high maintenance and I own it! I would be remiss if I forgot to mention Midori who was our main waitress and the other waiters and waitresses that cleared our table most efficiently. The service was excellent and one of the owners came out to check on us. One of our friends used to work at Shogun when she was 18 years old and they still remember her! Amazing! Everyone seemed very pleased by their food. We ordered the whole gamut with filet mignon, shrimp, chicken, scallops, snow crab sushi, and a cucumber wrapped yellowtail, salmon and tuna roll, ice cream and fried bananas. It was a nice touch that they brought ice cream with a candle for my nephew as we sang happy birthday! It was such a fun evening! Happy hibachi eating!

I used to think this was the best sushi spot in the city. But now, ehh, maybe it’s not the best, but it’s certainly a worthy experience. There was a lot of build up for me growing up about the infamous Shogun hibachi and sushi dining experience. My dad used to take us there when we were kids for«special occasions» for the hibachi dinner. Of course, as anyone with kids knows, this was no cheap dining expense. I still think their hibachi experience is great, but I find their sushi/sashimi lunch and dinner options to be extremely overpriced for the portions. I think at one time, I would definitely pay that kind of money for an exotic sushi experience if this was still 1990-something and Shogun was one of the first and few sushi dining restaurants in the area(and it was). But now, the thing is, there are SOMANY great Japanese restaurants popping up all over the place with the same quality and way better prices and portions. Recently I went back to Shogun and paid $ 27 for a 4 pieces of tempura fried vegetables, 4 slices of sashimi and soup for their dinner sashimi/tempura combination. I don’t know if I’m just being an extremely frugal person here, but that’s pretty steep. My main sushi places around town are Little Tokyo, Sushi Village and Sake Café and if I paid $ 27 worth of food at any of those places, you better bet I’d be taking home a box of leftovers. At Shogun I just sort of feel like I’m still missing something at the end of it all. In fact, I ended up snacking later that night because I honestly was not full from dinner. Also, the servers are not entirely friendly at Shogun. I always feel a little awkward and rushed when being served here. They have a very, «what do you want? do you want anything else? Ok here’s your check» sort of vibe here that tends to occasionally rub me the wrong way. Again, I by no means think this is a bad place. The quality of their food certainly is not lacking here at all. I just think it’s once good name is not enough to make me a die hard fan of this place and I can think of much better places to go for a sushi fix that’s only a stone throw away from their location.

Some of the best sushi creations that have ever been tasted by my taste buds came from here. When sitting at the sushi bar, always try to order from the specials menu — it is most definitely worth it. The sushi chefs are always a pleasure — kind, professional and helpful with any questions you may have. The hibachi stations are okay, in my opinion. There are other hibachi restaurants in the area that are a little more spacious and accommodating for large parties.
