Barker’s Haulover Inlet is not only a matter of local flavor but also a point of historical interest. Supposedly named after Baker, a sponge fisherman, who«hauled his boat» over the bank from the Atlantic Ocean, the actual inlet wasn’t created until 1925. In the 40’s, German submarines would come within 1000 feet of the area and in fact a several German sabotage spies were apprehended near here when they put ashore aboard a raft. The major importance of it today and what makes it worth Unilocaling about is that not only does it connect the Atlantic to the Intracoastal Waterway of North Miami, but also to one of the most fantastic recreational areas in all of South Florida. It provides navigational access to Oleta Bay, the ever popular Haulover Sandbar, the Keystone Islands of which locally known«Beer Can» is the most popular, Haulover Marina, the Haulover nude(I think to be politically correct I am supposed to say«Clothing Optional») beach and the massive 1,043 acre Oleta State Park with its ecosystems, bike tails, fishing, 1,200 foot sandy beach, Blue Moon outdoor center, naturalist tours & etc. Because of the access for recreation and the actual recreation it provides, this is my favorite inlet along the Florida Intracoastal. The navigation coordinates for Haulover Inlet are: N25 degrees 53′ 59″ W 80 degrees 07′ 26″.
