Peru is known for its seafood, especially its ceviche. My husband and I were eager to experience Peruvian cuisine during our visit to Miami in March 2011. At first glance the menu offered a good selection of different dishes, and our server helped us select the Ceviche Mixto to start off our meal. We arrived early, and the restaurant was almost empty. After she took our order for drinks and ceviche, our server returned to take our dinner order. Unfortunately, the first three things we requested were not available this particular evening. I settled on a dish that does not appear to be on their website: beef served with rice and French fries, and an egg. My husband ordered a chicken and rice dish, also not on the current site. The ceviche was fantastic. Well-plated(see photo) and in a lemony marinade that was flavourful but not overpowering. A while later the food arrived, and it was a little bit of a shock; my plate contained a chunk of beef over French fries, with white rice on the side. The rice was topped with a fried egg, and two pieces of plantain were to the side of the dish. The beef was good. The meal was good. Not very inventive; this was likely one of the lesser dishes on the menu. My husband was presented with what is essentially Chinese style fried rice. With beef. Not the chicken he ordered — beef. The flavour was good, but the plating was utilitarian. Our server came over to see how we were enjoying our meal; I asked her, «is this rice beef or chicken?» She replied, «that’s beef,» and then left before I could mention that he ordered chicken. And then? SHELEFT. We finished our dinner, and sat at our table for around 10 minutes. Our server did not return, so I walked up to the counter and tried to talk to the other server, who unfortunately did not speak English. I tried to ask her about the cake that was on the counter, and she tried to explain to me. I looked at the cake, said«dulce de leche?» due to the caramel-coloured topping, and she nodded enthusiastically. Five minutes later she brought the cake to our table. It was dry and crumbly, and the dulce de leche topping was OK but not impressive. Halfway through our dessert our server returned, but did not stop at our table. After we finished dessert, I visited the bathroom. A sign on the stall door requested that we place toilet paper in the baskets. This was unsettling, to say the least. Still, I placed my … used… toilet paper in the covered basket and returned to the table. My husband still had not been given our check, so he walked over to the counter to take care of our bill. I was rather disappointed with the restaurant. The food was good but uninspired; perhaps some of their signature dishes — when they are available — are better. The service was fairly awful, even though the people were quite nice. Lots of potential, but missed the mark on that evening.

You can really tell when the seafood is fresh and this place has got it. The food was very good quality as well. They seem to be big on their ceviche, which I didn’t order this time around but will soon. Instead, I had the Pescado a lo Macho and it was goooood. My North American wife ordered a rice plate which was their version of Chinese chicken-fried-rice. It was ok but who orders Chinese food in a Peruvian restaurant? I guess my wife does. :) Can’t wait to try their ceviche.

What are all these 4 and 5 star reviews doing here? Overpriced, bad service, frozen fish, unspectacular vegetables and presentation. I actually gave this place 5 tries because it’s next to Master Sang’s TNT the taekwondo dojo my son was attending, but I finally told them I’d never come back. AWFUL.

Sunday evening after being all day at the beach with my family, we decided we wanted to have Pollo a la brasa(Peruvian chicken rotisserie) for dinner. So I grabbed my iphone, opened the Unilocal app and looked for the closest peruvian restaurants. This was the closest and had good reviews but they didn’t say anything about pollo a la brasa so I called to check if they had it and indeed they did. The whole chicken with fries and a salad was $ 12 which I thought was a very reasonable price. But the chicken was tasteless, it was probably the worst pollo a la brasa I’ve ever had in my life. It was also a little bit undercooked in some parts. I didn’t try anything else and just dedided to pay the bill and leave. Of course I will never go back.

Went here on a Saturday night and had some of the best ceviche that I’ve ever had. To start the night we had conchitas a la parmeseana, which brought 5 huge scallops that are baked to perfection with parmesean cheese. Delicious! Next we had the ceviche mixto. It’s a huge ceviche platter that is certainly large enough to share. After that we had the arroz chaufa de mariscos, which we also shared. It was also a winner. All in all, we had an excellent dining experience. The waitstaff is very friendly and the owner came by several times to see how we were doing. I’m looking forward to coming back for lunch this upcoming week so I can sample more items on their menu.

Slipped away from work and took the MDT120 bus to North Beach for some Peruvian food. South Beach can be fun, but affordable and decent dining options are in short supply down there. The bus is an easy and cheap alternative to cabs that charge by the 1⁄6 of a mile! I appreciated that El Rincon de Chabuca had continuous food service throughout the day. My schedule was a bit off after taking the red-eye, so I didn’t end up showing up for lunch until 3:30pm. I wanted to try so many dishes, but dining solo gave me a limited view of the menu. I had the tiradito to start and it was sparkling fresh and a giant serving. Seriously, this is exactly what I wanted, a dinner plate covered with corvina marinated in lemon juice with garlic, chiles, and giant Peruvian corn. I was so happy when the waitress asked if I wanted it spicy and delivered. Yum! I also selected the yuquitos dos sabores, two Twinkie-sized and shaped fried cassava logs. One stuffed with chopped tenderloin and the other with white cheese, accompanied by pickled red onions and huancaina sauce. This would have been better to share, but I like cassava and how can you turn down fried starchy logs with ultra rich and cheesy huancaina sauce? This is more of a local, mom-and-pop type place, definitely not fine dining, but great none the less. My waitress didn’t blink an eye at a solo diner eating a meal that lacked an entrée at an odd time. I found the prices to be very reasonable for the portions and quality of the food. 4 stars.

You like seafood and fish, mariscos y pescada? Peruvian cuisine is famous for it, and this spot fills the bill. I had the grilled fish which the server said would be snapper but turned out to be tilapia. Oh well, I love tilapia even better, because it is healthy being a smaller fish, and I don’t feel guilty because snapper is way overfished and endangered. My brother and sis in law had a huge mixte dish that I ended up taking home and eating for two more lunches. The portions were HUGE. Great value! I loved the authentic interior with rough hewn wood tables, mini stage with a lonely guitar and chair, and Peruvian art on the tables and wall.

Really great. Not a fancy place or anything, but the food makes up for any lack of atmosphere. I went a while ago, so this will not be a very detailed review, but will update once I go again. We went on a sunday, around lunch to nurse our hangovers. Group of about 8 and we shared a lot of dishes. sharing is a great way to go; best way to taste lots of different dishes! Also, very well priced considering the high quality of the dishes. And service was good, not great… but we were a group of 8 demanding and slightly hungover adults. A few dishes that stood out: 5* Jalea Mixta(Deep fried seafood with«criolla» sauce on the side. Big serving) MUSTGET!!! batter is so light(like tempura) you really get the taste and texture of the seafood! 4* Yuca a la Huancaína(Yuca covered with Huancaína creamy cheese sauce) Huancaína is crazy good flavor 3.75* Conchitas a la Parmesana(Scallops baked in their shell and seasoned with parmessan cheese) 4* Ceviche Mixto(Fish and seafood ceviche w/sweet potato) Leche de Tigre(«Tiger’s Milk» the essence of the ceviche served in a glass … the boys claim this is a hangover cure… esp. if you mix with pisco) Will be back soon :)
