Elliot Key and all the other Keys for that matter used to be the largest chain of coral reefs in the world about 80000 years ago. Elliot Key is the first island thats starts of what we call the Florida Keys. The key is roughly 7 miles long. It used to be inhabited by the Tequesta indians, there are lots of stories of pirates and slaves would seek refuge here. In the 1950’s some wealthy tycoons wanted to turn the key into a gaming resort and spa. Thankfully some people opposed and were able to keep the island as natural as possible. Even though when hiking you can see the remains of what used to be a 6 lane highway down the middle of the key. This is one of the only places in Miami where you have a clear view of sunrise and sunset. Elliot key is great for camping they have running water and showers(for those refined campers) If you want to go camping and dont have a boat for 20 dollars a fairy will drop you off and pick you up. If anyone wants to get away for a weekend without having to drive like crazy Elliot key is the spot to go
