The pieces are varied and inspired, ranging from traditional paintings to modern abstract. Of the several different artists featured, Fernando Botero was the most prominent. He used the same obese woman(possibly his wife, I haven’t done my research) as the model in many of his sketches, paintings, and painted bronze statues. In the whole set, she consistently has this unabashed humanity, just a woman(albeit a heavy one) lying in front of an artist, that rivets the attention and is honestly what makes the artwork so striking. I stumbled in here by accident, lured by the larger-than-life statues in the parking lot. There were no event going on when I came and it was empty except for people who worked there. It was raining outside and I was in no rush to leave, so I happily spent the next 1 – 2 hours poring over each and every artwork, including a Ferrari parked in back which for all I know could or could not have been part of the exhibit. I also used the bathroom right before I left and was surprised to find that the walls were also(tastefully) covered with paintings including a different one in each stall. It did make me wonder what sort of artwork was in the men’s room… but I didn’t go in to check.

The biggest gallery in the world with 55,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space with three components: Gary Nader Private Collection, the Exhibition Gallery and the Sculpture Park Nader has a large collection of Botero sculptures(I’m a fan of) and canvas art(not a fan of) and I have a theory for why this is He kinda looks like a living Botero piece All kidding aside, he has a great collection and has helped the Miami art scene extensively I once saw a Piccaso in the hallway that leads to the bathroom Like the kids would say, that is swag

Gary Nader is one of the OG’s of the Miami Art Scene and tonight’s opening is another proof of why. I was down in Wynwood, cruising in my 6 – 4 trying to roll up to the Se7ven BBQ event. That was closed, but hold up, there’s mad rides pulling up to another gallery about a half block up. Free Valet Parking? Fo’ shizzle! Rolling up classy, since 5-O, I mean Miami Police was in the area I tucked my shirt, shone my watch and put on my bluetooth headset. Voila, Serg the 1%er! =) Check out the pretty hostesses — and structural art of the roof when you walk in. I’m talking a combination of metal framing, drop caps and drop panels, as well as exposed ductwork showcasing the building structure as art. Nosh on some tasty nibbles from Bongo’s(their Cuban sushi consisting of a rice roll enveloping lechon, black beans and sweet plaintains come to mind.) There’s more: vaca frita(pulled chicken sliders with chimichurri, cold crisp chardonnay. Now I’m in the mood for art! What better way to open a Basel exhibit than with Botero sculptures(including a kitteh than can haz wine), as well as other Hispanic artists. Throw in a deejay spinning some mellow acid house, and the night is on for art!
